Examining the experiences that motivate high school students to read for leisure
In my role as a high school principal, I feel that reading is an essential tool for gaining a better grasp of the world around us and enhancing one\u27s academic skills. As is the case with many others in my area, and before starting this research, I was worried about the decline in motivation to read for leisure that generally begins in the high school years (Brozo et al., 2014). Students\u27 enjoyment of reading can be stifled by schools\u27 use of forced reading practices, the selection of texts that do not match their identity, and a lack of knowledge of how they identify with reading media and/or their own experiences. (Bozack, 2011; Hochweber & Vieluf, 2018). One of the fundamental and common problems I have read in reading motivation research and found within our school context is that the reading variable itself is confusing which means that high ability readers are highly motivated whereas the less ability students are identified as less motivated students. Roettger (1980) also found this conceptualization incorrect. This means that I can find excellent readers in my school who might not be motivated to read at all, while there might be students who are less proficient readers but adamant to read and are highly motivated.
Having said that and keeping reading experiences into perspective, one of the most fundamental tasks of a school is to address this issue and connect readers with books and other materials. The critical nature of reading abilities in education, the percentage of teenagers who describe reading as an activity they engage in has steadily declined (Brozo et al.,2014). Due to decline in student motivation and rigidness to read for leisure, I considered it significant to examine the experiences that motivate high school students primarily grades nine and grade ten to read, so that such experiences are made common across high school

Global change drivers synergize with the negative impacts of non-native invasive ants on native seed-dispersing ants
Non-native species invasion, habitat fragmentation and climate change individually impose negative impacts on natural systems, but their synergistic effects may do more harm than the sum of their parts. We examined the combined effects of these global change drivers by studying the impacts of experimental warming on seed-dispersing forest ant nesting and foraging in the Southeastern U.S. to determine if warming and forest fragmentation facilitated non-native ant invasion effects on native ants. Spring ant phenology and activities were monitored for two years (2019-2020) at weekly bait stations and in artificial nest occupancy. We found that, when combined, forest edge habitat and experimental warming favored invasive non-native ant frequency, but the experimental warming alone did not appear to facilitate non-native ant incursion into forested habitat. We did find, however, that experimental warming exacerbated the negative effects of non-native ants on native ant foraging. Moreover, fragmented edge habitat strongly limited native forest ant foraging and experimental warming increased the negative effects of non-native ant invaders on native ants. Ultimately, the non-native ants displaced native seed-dispersing ants from artificial nests, and the displacement progressively increasing with greater experimental warming. Our results suggest that global change drivers such as warming, habitat fragmentation and species invasion imposed negative impacts individually, but their combined effects were worse than the sum of their parts. Moreover, our results indicate that predicting species reactions to global change poses great challenges given that the strongest impacts were the non-additive effects.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/biology_data/1012/thumbnail.jp
Proof Positive: Applications of Chemical Analysis Techniques in Art Forgery Detection
In response to the subjective nature of older forgery detection techniques, modern forgery detection methods rely heavily on chemical analysis of the materials utilized in a given piece of work in order to make authenticity determinations. Chemical methods of detection at their core provide an objective determination of facts regarding the composition of materials utilized in contested pieces and provide a relative date of production for those materials. In this way, chemical analysis helps service the field of modern forgery detection as a direct compliment to traditional stylistic analysis, by providing extra data on the piece that can often be much harder to refute.
In this paper, the author will provide an overview of the modern techniques being applied to forgery detection based heavily in the field of chemistry. Additionally, the author will present case studies in which the methods discussed have been applied to success in determination of authenticity, or have been proven effective for future use in authenticity determination. Finally, the author will touch on the direction in which the field of forgery detection is heading into the future
Teaching Creativity: A 21st Century Reentry Skill
This project reflects a search to identify the creativity tools that will enable returning citizens to solve problems and make better decisions so that they can live satisfying and productive lives outside of prison walls. My personal creative journey through this process contributed to the content, highlighting the necessity of resiliency as an important skill for returning citizens who have spent large amounts of time incarcerated. Improv theater was identified as a useful tool to encourage resiliency in a fun, non-threatening way
