Screening of Near-IR Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Dyes Using Quick Freezing-Induced AuNP Aggregates (QFIAAs).
No full textNear-IR (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an emerging bioimaging technique that can be a safe alternative with a resolution better than current bioimaging techniques, such as MRI, CT, and PET. These can be hazardous with long-term exposure due to powerful magnetic fields or ionizing radiation. The success of NIR SERS bioimaging lies partially in the selection of highly sensitive NIR Raman reporters, which is essential to achieve highly resolved bioimaging of the body system. NIR Raman dyes must satisfy three important conditions: strong absorption in the NIR region, strong binding to the surfaces of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and excellent NIR SERS activity. AuNPs have been used as vital SERS substrates but must be aggregated to create hot-spots to produce strong SERS signals. Thus, the AuNPs are often aggregated by adding salts or high concentrations of dye molecules themselves, which is largely due to the electrical neutralization of negatively charged AuNP surfaces.1 However, these methods are difficult to control the aggregation of AuNPs, thus leading to unreliable SERS signals. We discovered that Quick Freezing Induced Gold Aggregates (QFIAAs) prepared from AuNPs with an average diameter of 70 nm could not only act as excellent NIR SERS substrates but also remain suspended in a solution for a long time, so they could be used to detect analytes using NIR SERS. In addition, QFIAAs were stable without disintegration when stored for more than three months. My research has focused on the applications of QFIAAs in the screening of dye molecules with high throughput for NIR SERS bioimaging. The effect of the capping agents on the formation of QFIAAs, the charge effect of dye molecules on their adsorption on QFIAAs, and the results of a proof-of-concept experiment on using QFIAAs to screen dye molecules for NIR SERS will be discussed

Together, textualization and typography have the ability to coerce the reader into a specific reading pattern. Mark Z. Danielewski has combined textualization and typography in his complex novel House of Leaves as a unique attempt to represent trauma in the space between language and written language. Typical textual play becomes textual persuasion as the reader is guided through the labyrinth of text by typographical coercion. In this novel, these elements of play essentially force the reader to partake in a trauma-inducing literary, physical, and mental journey by means of engaging with a story that challenges reality and perception. This thesis will explain how textualization and typography create a powerful and manipulative guide through both the novel and the maze that folds within the house at the center of the novel. Lastly, it will demonstrate how to travel through the house and describe the effect in which this journey attempts to have on a reader
Comparative Study of American Cloth Covered Bindings 1850–1869 and Treatment of The Silver Sunbeam (1864)
Get PDFTen cloth covered edition bindings, produced in America between 1850 and 1869 and found in the Buffalo State Conservation Department, were selected for comparative study. A history of bookbinding practices in industrialized American binderies of the 19th century is presented. The books were examined for evidence of machine manufacture. Study of the book structures was enhanced with raking illumination photography, reflectance transformation imaging (RTI), and X-radiography. Elemental analysis of colorants in bookcloths was done with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). Fiber optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) and multi-spectral imaging (MSI) were explored as methods for differentiating dyed textile covers. Information gained from the comparative study of the bindings informed a stabilization treatment of The Silver Sunbeam, a photography manual published in 1864
The Technical Study and Conservation of a Multiplex Hologram
No full textThe Kiss II” is a multiplex hologram created by Lloyd Cross in 1975. This particular copy was produced by Peter Claudius in the 1980s. It was previously owned by New York’s Museum of Holography, which was forced to close in 1992 due to financial failure. The hologram is now part of a private collection in Buffalo, New York—whose owners sought out conservation treatment. The primary condition concerns are instability and dirt and dust accumulation. In addition to addressing condition concerns, this project aims to improve upon the imaging and preventative protocol for holograms. Although there is much research available on the technology of holograms, there is very little information available regarding the conservation treatments of Multiplex holograms. The steps taken throughout the course of this project have been thoroughly documented to lay the groundwork for a suggested protocol for treating Multiplex holograms
Enhancing Creativity in Organizational Teams: Development of The Spark Program
Get PDFOrganizational teams have experienced unprecedented change since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic—such as frequent changes in leadership, increased turnover, and shifting to full-time remote work—which have impacted their ability to form lasting creative connections. This project addresses the challenge of the above changes by introducing a creativity-boosting program called The Spark, designed to help organizational teams remain inspired, connected, and energized throughout times of change. Following an overview of the rationale for this project and a review of the pertinent literature, the process plan is provided in detail. The project resulted in a program structure based on the Torrance Incubation Model (TIM), a flexible workshop design, and valuable feedback on the program. Key learnings include a deeper understanding of group creativity and diversity, applied learning from Creativity and Change Leadership, a comparison of creative thinking assessments such as FourSight and Kirton Adaptation-Innovation Inventory (KAI), foundations of instructional design, and challenges encountered along the way

Strike at the Museum: A Report on Museum Labor Unions
Get PDFAt a time of decline in American labor unions, museums have been an outlier. This recent trend has swept through America regarding museum labor and their desire for union representation. This thesis examines the recent increase in museum employees to unionize, explore recent successes, and outline perceived benefits of union representation. Critiques of not having a voice in the workplace, unfair wages, and calls to acknowledge social injustice have all served as catalysts to museum workers unionizing. Museum work consists of several responsibilities concerning stewardship, education, and public outreach. One often overlooks the function of museum employees since visitors often attend museums for their artifacts and exhibits. The impact museum unions can have on the profession as a whole and surrounding communities is enormous.The history of the American labor movement is full of examples as to how labor unions affect more than just the workplace. Labor unions have often been associated with impacting politics and social justice movements on a national level. Unfortunately, not all press about labor unions has been positive due to counts of corruption. This negative press then serves as an advantage to the management class by creating a skeptical mindset within the working class prior to any organizing efforts. This negative view has led to federal policymaking hindering union ability and harming growth. This opposition to traditional unions held by some has left the door open for a potential transformation.
Sectoral bargaining is a direction all labor in America can transition into, including museums. The future of museum labor is uncertain due to many museums still struggling with workers being unhappy with not having a voice, unfair wages, and a desire for their institution to recognize social injustice. Museums, like many other workplaces in America, unionize one by one. It is difficult to run a successful union campaign due to the presence of anti-union firms that educate managers on how to stifle all union activity. This difficulty can be alleviated through sectoral bargaining because entire sectors of museums would be able to negotiate as one on a national scale, instead of relying on solo union campaigns.
Sectoral bargaining is tough to achieve because federal and local policymaking is required to make it a reality. Although, other countries like Denmark can serve as a blueprint as to how a country can develop that system successfully. The result of unions and museums will lead to museum employees and upper management working together to achieve a fair and just workplace that can correct past inequities and better serve their surrounding communities

Does Participation in Extracurricular Theatre Productions Influence Emotional Wellbeing?
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to research whether or not participating in extracurricular theatre productions had an impact on the emotional wellbeing of students in middle and high school. Students involved in extracurricular theatre productions during the 2021-2022 school year were surveyed and asked to rate their level of confidence, self-esteem, among others. They were also asked open-ended questions regarding their experience in the theatre department and the learnings or benefits they perceived to have gained as a result. The multiple-choice questions showed data ranging from students claiming they were very confident to not confident at all, but the most valuable information came from the open-ended questions. Students compared their participation in the theatre to being in a family and many of them shared personal gainings from being in extracurricular theatre productions, such as feeling more confident, meeting new people, making friends, taking a break from the stress of school, etc
