Piecing It Together: Analysis and Treatment of a Painted Silk Flag

    Get PDF
Painted flags and banners lie at the intersection of painting and textile conservation. The 37th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment’s battle flag from the Civil War presented challenges and advantages of bridging the two disciplines by providing an opportunity for study and experimentation for a graduate student from the Patricia H. and Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State College. This study was conducted to better understand the materials and degradation products present in a painted Civil War flag, which then informed the subsequent treatment of said flag. By characterizing the materials, the severe damage in the painted areas on the silk was explained. Overall, areas of the flag were documented with multi-modal imaging (MMI) and observed using microscopy on cross sections. The elements present in the silk and the paint were identified using a combination of x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identified components of the materials. Raman was used to further identify pigments where FTIR was inconclusive. Pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS) was used to confirm the identity of organic materials within the painted regions. The conservation treatment of the flag was dominated by experimentation of techniques to establish a workflow, so future students may be able to complete the treatment. The milestones achieved to date include successfully unfurling and flattening the flag with the aid of humidification, providing recommendations for future humidification, and establishing treatment protocols for stain reduction, efflorescence reduction, and consolidation

Developing a Prototype of a Playfulness Toolkit

    Get PDF
Playfulness is the ability to reframe situations, seeing new possibilities. A playful mind-set increases our mental flexibility, resilience, empathy, and our overall well-being. Unfortunately, growing up most of us lose part of our playfulness. How can we facilitate adults to live a (more) playful life? To ignite playfulness in adults’ lives, we first have to raise awareness for the benefits of playfulness, and then help people to develop a playful mind-set and integrate playfulness into their lives. In this project I combine my knowledge of creativity and playfulness with my experience in service and behavior design. I developed a prototype of a Playfulness Toolkit, a game that guides people through the process of developing a playful mindset, consisting of tools, objects and Tiny Playful Habits. With this toolkit I hope to bridge the gap between knowing and doing, facilitating more playful behavior in adults’ lives

An Exploration of Skills and Competencies to Develop Tiny Tasks for a Sustainability Mindset

    Get PDF
The Journal of Environmental Psychology and Human Ecology Review have produced various articles about the relationship between values, environmental attitudes, happiness, and sustainable lifestyles. Research shows that a change of individual behaviors and lifestyles is generally considered to be of vital importance for making the transition to a sustainable society. This project explored the individual skills and competencies that are needed to develop a Sustainability Mindset, also referred to as the 12 Sustainability Principles in the book The Sustainability Mindset Principles: A Guide to Developing a Mindset for a Better World written by Isabel Rimanoczy in 2021. The first result of this exploration is a high-level resource guide for each principle. The second concrete result is a set of tiny tasks, short activities, and reflection exercises, that help others to better understand how they can embed sustainable behaviors into their daily lives, whether that is personal or work-related

Creativity and Spirituality: The Undeniable Connection Between the Two

    Get PDF
Exploring the Spiritual Nature of Creativity As a deeply spiritual person I began to notice that as I developed my spiritual practices and grew deeper in my spirituality my creativity started to flourish. Ironically enough, I had chosen a master’s program that focused solely on creativity. This is something I would later call a synchronicity, where things in your life magically happen to align. My spirituality, something I am so passionate about started to work its way into my graduate studies. Finding the Center for Applied Imagination through Buffalo State College has not only allowed me to strengthen my creativity and grow deeper in my spirituality, but also allowed me to gain a whole new perspective of how the two are so graciously intertwined. It is my belief that as you intentionally work to understand who you truly are through spiritual and self-development practices you will be gifted the magic of heightened creativity. Throughout my master’s project you will find personal reflections of practices and concepts, as well as excerpts from readings that have allowed me to discover this connection

The Significance of Abolitionism and the Underground Railroad, in the Buffalo area, 1840-1860

    Get PDF
The movement to end slavery is commonly known as the abolitionist movement. As a city located next to the Canadian border, Buffalo was a major route on the Underground Railroad. Sadly, when researching abolitionism and the Underground Railroad, national research seems to gloss over Buffalo. If Buffalo makes an appearance in national history books on this topic it is usually only a mention of being an Underground Railroad route into Canada. If historians mention Upstate New York, they usually focus on Frederick Douglass’s home of Rochester. Using the accounts of abolitionists, fugitive slaves, newspapers, community activists, and guest speakers, it becomes clear that by the 1850s Buffalo was at the forefront of a new wave of abolitionism. This new wave is distinguishable from what came before it by, advocating for, and taking radical action to end slavery. One of these actions was helping those attempting to escape slavery. This author intends to analyze both primary and secondary sources, from 1830-1859, that pertain to any abolitionist lecture, convention, debate, newspaper, or activity such as helping fugitive slaves, happening in the Buffalo area. This study will use these sources to show the development of increasing escalation in abolitionist activity and rhetoric in Buffalo, which can be traced back to the 1830s. With this new information, this study intends to inform readers about how Buffalo was more than just an Underground Railroad route. It was a leading city in this new wave of abolitionism

This module will explore the various aspects of executive function (inhibition, cognitive flexibility, working memory). Students will use topical readings and Sesame Street video clips to explore how executive function develops throughout childhood and adolescence, common methods for studying executive function (e.g., Stroop task, marshmallow task), and techniques that parents and teachers can use to help children develop executive function skills.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/themed-coursework/1003/thumbnail.jp
