Why Wasn’t Participation in Government Enough?: A Historical Policy Analysis of PIG and the Seal of Civic Readiness
New York State has long been a leader in educational reform, including initiating efforts to enhance civic education. For example, in 1985, concerns regarding the civic and economic literacy of the state\u27s youth prompted the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to mandate a fourth credit in social studies education. This fourth credit required students in their senior year to take two new half-credit courses, Participation in Government (PIG) and Economics. When President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015, its emphasis on college, career, and civic readiness provided an additional incentive for NYSED to review its approach to civic education. Shortly afterward, NYSED introduced a new initiative, the Seal of Civic Readiness (SoCR), raising questions among educators regarding the future of PIG and its relationship to the SoCR. This paper provides a historical policy analysis of PIG and the SoCR within the context of civic education and ESSA. The intent is to answer the question, why was PIG not enough, by contrasting the two policies and providing four considerations for stakeholders as the SoCR gains popularity across the state and nationwide
Teaching History at an International School with a culturally diverse student body
In Siena Italy, my peers and I did research that was conducted in and outside of The International School of Siena. To expand our teaching careers and experiences. My research focused on how teachers teach history curriculum in international schools, where diversity has a significant impact since students travel from all over the world to gain an education. The role of the IB International education is significant in my research to understand how a diverse student body alters the teaching of history and how the curriculum ensures inclusivity for all students without compromising their educational experience.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/ipds_research/1016/thumbnail.jp
Technical Analysis and Treatment of a Folk Art Portrait of a Boy
This Master’s Project is a multidisciplinary technical study and conservation treatment of Portrait of a Boy, a 19th century oil painting on canvas and thought to be an example of the American Folk Art movement. Research into Folk Art traditions was executed to inform the context of the artwork. Comprehensive imaging and scientific analyses provided additional historical and material context for the painting. The painting was imaged with the following techniques: visible illumination, ultraviolet (UV) reflectography, ultraviolet-induced visible fluorescence, infrared reflectography, visible-induced infrared (IR) luminescence, x-radiography, and multispectral imaging (MSI). Scientific and materials analyses included: optical microscopy of fiber and paint cross-section samples, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (Py-GCMS). The historical and technical research informed an extensive treatment of the painting, including varnish removal, tear repair, lining, and inpainting. The conservation treatment was successful and resulted in a stabilized painting that more accurately depicts the sitter as well as preserves the painting\u27s materials and composition

TO WHAT EXTENT DOES THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS ENCOURAGE TEACHERS TO ENHANCE THE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS OF FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS

Ihab Mosa Basha & Abdelmuniem Mohamed
Under the direction of Dr. Joan DellaValle
School accreditation organizations aim to enhance the ability of educational institutions to develop and improve their performance and outcomes by using research based standards and indicators to measure the quality of school operations. This study aimed to assess the effect of the school accreditation process, especially Qatar National School Accreditation (QNSA) on raising teachers’ and educators’ awareness of the importance of the implementation of higher order thinking skills (HOTS). The research focused on the twenty-first century skills among students in the fifth and sixth grades, specifically in four private schools offering British curriculum in Qatar. The most important components that are examined in this research are the curriculum planning and formative and summative assessments that are designed to gauge and enhance students\u27 critical thinking skills, The final results were aligned with the research hypothesis in the presence of a positive impact of the Qatar national school accreditation (QNSA) on the development of students\u27 higher thinking skills. Further research in the area is needed for creating a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of QNSA accreditation on schools that use other curricula, as well as on teachers who teach different year levels
