HEW425
Examines the etiology of alcohol use and the public health significance of alcohol-related problems. Uses theoretical frameworks to understand how social, cultural, and environmental factors influence alcohol use, misuse, and abuse, including gender, race, and ethnicity. Explores research-based prevention strategies to reduce alcohol consumption and achieve population-level health and social impact

Career Exploration Opportunities for DP Students
This study examined the differences in American school systems at the high school level to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP) . This study looked at student exposure to extensive amount of information on career clusters, future job options, and life pathways. Although core curriculum in United States schools such as mathematics, science, and English prepare students for common core assessments and state testing, high schools need to spend more time in career exploration for students tailored to their own interests. “A national survey commissioned by The Hunt Institute found that a solid majority of parents of school age children (64 percent) and especially parents of high school students (71 percent) believe having programs and courses that teach job skills for future workforce needs is very important.” (Siddiqi, 2022) The purpose of my research is to show how business classes with a guided and controlled curriculum can be beneficial by guiding students to utilize project-based learning and internships to set themselves up for secondary education or the workforce in a career they are interested in.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/ipds_research/1014/thumbnail.jp
Christ Child Bearing the Instruments of the Passion Technical Study and Treatment of a Painting on Copper from the Viceroyalty of Peru
Christ Child Bearing the Instruments of the Passion (acc.# 228017) is a 17th century Peruvian Viceregal painting on copper belonging to the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation. The painting depicts the Christ Child on a flower laid path as he carries the instruments of the passion also known as the Arma Christi Paintings executed on copper convey new and challenging preservation issues based on their materials and techniques.. The work had been heavily restored and exhibited several condition issues, including significant overpaint and broad losses. The painting was photographed using multimodal imaging techniques as well as reflectance transformation imaging and multispectral imaging. Analytical techniques including Raman, reflected FTIR, and scanning XRF were performed to better understand the painting’s materials and history. The palette was consistent with historical materials of the region and the period, and indicated the use of earth colors, vermillion, lamp black, lead white, and azurite. Finally, conservation treatments were undertaken to reduce the previous overpaint and improve the aesthetic legibility. The treatment was successful and restored unity to the composition
Play Based Learning in the Art Classroom
This study focused on whether play-based learning (PBL) in the art classroom increases engagement and participation and decreases behavior issues among students with emotional and behavioral disorders (E/BD). Moreover, I was interested in investigating how to support these students acquire the skills they need to manage their emotions and develop strategies to make the time they spend in art a more engaging and enriching experience.
By using a qualitative arts based research methodology, my intention was to discover how art educators could expand and consider new teaching methods in order to reach and teach children with E/BD. The phenomenon I investigated was the incorporation of puppetry into the art room curriculum and the impact it had holistically to student relationships and how students viewed themselves. It was my hope that my findings not only positively impacted students with E/BD but the entire classroom climate as well. Insights from the student’s point of view were gleaned by implementing an ethnographic approach which derives from the disciplines of cultural anthropology and qualitative sociology. Furthermore, due to the limitations of time and resources for this study, a compressed ethnography was used.
The results found that introducing PBL in the art classroom had positive effects across several key areas, most notably regarding student engagement. Having the ability to move around freely in the classroom environment contributed a feeling of heightened enthusiasm and energy to the space. Participants entered the classroom motivated and ready to learn and share their individual talents during this study. Consequently, disruptive behavior was not minimized during this study however at no time did I observe behaviors that were aggressive, hostile or defiant in nature. The disruptions were most commonly due to increased volume and tension within groups
Exploring the Relationships Between Grade, Gender, and Immigration Status on Reading Motivation Among Multilingual Elementary Students
In this study, we aim to address this gap by investigating how various individual learner characteristics such as grade level, gender, and immigration status affected upper-elementary school MLs’ reading motivation in English. To achieve the goal, we adopted a three-factor reading motivation model that includes three interrelated constructs (instrumental, integrative, and social motivation) based on factors which have been found to motivate individuals to learn a second or additional language. The sample for this survey research included 132 MLs in fourth-to-sixth grades from six schools in a Midwestern state. Findings indicate that while social motivation, which is prominent in the general reading motivation literature, is pertinent to MLs’ reading motivation, other constructs such as integrative motivation and instrumental motivation should be given attention. In fact, instrumental motivation was the construct which seemed to motivate MLs the most out of the constructs included in the survey
