Appraisal System and News Discourse
Get PDFAppraisal is the core of all discourses and texts, and it can be divided into explicit and implicit evaluation. News media discourse usually employs linguistic elements and sentence patterns which seem neutral but imply attitudinal denotation to express the stances and positions of media groups. This study analyzes the forms of implicit evaluation from three aspects: lexical metaphor, ideational meaning and engagement resources, and explores its evaluation function in discourse. The evaluation resources in the discourse are very rich, and the probe into appraisal system in the news text is significant to understand the theme in the discourse. Therefore, the evaluation of news media language is worthy of further discussion by scholars at home and abroad

The Nature of Psychological Resilience Among Persons With Disabilities in Jordan

The study used the qualitative phenomenological research method to achieve the study objective. The results indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the psychological resilience of persons with disabilities, especially the cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral aspect. A Study on the Translation Techniques of Long Sentences in the Science of Fairy Tales Under Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory
Get PDFInformative texts make up a large part of all the texts worldwide. Newmark’s communicative translation theory has been proved to be of great value in guiding the translation of this kind among translations written in Indo-European languages. But whether this theory is still applicable in transferring long complex English sentences into Chinese remains to be further verified. This paper focuses on some selected sentences from a content-based informative text The Science of Fairy Tales which demonstrates the principle and method in creating fairy tales and is written by Edwin Sidney Hartland, a prestigious writer in folklore literature. In translation, the present translators find that in addition to some relevant terminology concerning fairy tales, the text contains numerous long complex sentences which is necessary to choose appropriate translation techniques within the theoretical framework in order to produce an ideal rendition. In light of this, to take the typical translation of long sentences in social science texts as examples, the writers of this paper exemplify the E-C translation of long sentences in social science texts under the guidance of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory, hoping to explore the translation techniques of long sentences in this kind of texts. The present translators choose five translation techniques: sequence, reverse, division, embedding and recasting. After a meticulous and rigorous study, the present translators find that Communicative Translation Theory not only helps to produce acceptable and idiomatic translation but also provide feasible guidance for informative texts translation.
Study on Strong Inhibition Compound-salt Plugging Drilling Fluid and Its Application in Offshore Drilling Practices
Get PDFWell-bore instability problems often occurred when drilling in the formations of Dongying Group and Shahejie Group in Block Chengbei of Shengli Offshore in the past, which led to various down-hole complex problems and seriously affected the comprehensive benefits. In view of this situation, a seawater compound-salt plugging drilling fluid system is developed. The system is obviously superior to the traditional polysulfonate system in rheology, inhibition, high temperature resistance, bentonite contamination resistance and lubricity, and the temperature resistance can reach more than 180°C. The application results of more than ten wells on several platforms in Shengli offshore show that the drilling fluid system has stable performance, convenient maintenance, strong clay inhibition, plugging and collapse prevention, the average well diameter swelling rate of all wells is less than 8.0%, and the cementing quality qualification rate is 100%. It can effectively control the formation mud making, and the waste drilling fluid is only 1/3~1/4 of the conventional water-based drilling fluid. After well completion, the plug can be removed by acidizing, which has achieved good formation damage controlling effect

Differential Effect of Role Play Method and School Location on Senior Secondary School Students’ English Language Skills Acquisition in Awka Education Zone
Get PDFSkill acquisition is an essential requirement for successful living and survival in the ever growing world of technological changes. It is a sine qua non in education; but majority of secondary school students do not have much practice in the classroom and this affects their acquisition of the language skills that lay the foundation for good education and effective socialization. The quest and concern to ameliorate the situation prompted this study to examine the differential effect of role play method and school location on secondary school students English language skills’ acquisition. Two research questions and two hypotheses were used in the study. Quasi experimental involving 2x2 factorial designs was employed. Sample consists of 180 students drawn from 4,024 SS2 students in the 62 public secondary schools in the Zone using multi-stage sampling. English Language Skills Acquisition Test (ELSAT) validated by education experts and found reliable using Kendal-W for essay/letter writing type questions and Cronbach Alpha for multiple choice and oral/speaking questions was used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for research questions and ANCOVA for hypotheses testing. The findings revealed among others that students in experimental group acquired the language skills more than those in the control group. The findings further indicated that students in both urban and rural schools in the experimental group had great improvement in their language skills acquisition though the students in the urban schools outperformed those in the rural schools after the experiment. This showed that school location is a significant factor in students’ acquisition of English language skills when role play method is used.
