The Recreation of the “Sapience” of Xue Baochai in the Translations of Hong Lou Meng

    Get PDF
“时宝钗 (Shi Baochai, sapient Baochai)” is widely acknowledged as one of the most accurate descriptions of Xue Baochai. “Sapience” is her outstanding characteristic throughout the novel, mainly exhibited in her flexibility in dealing with various persons and her firm support for dominant feudal ethics. This article discusses the “sapience” of Xue Baochai recreated in the two translations of Hong Lou Meng based on the theoretical framework of systemic functional linguistics. From the perspectives of experiential, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions, the article finds out that by adding material process and imperative mood types, Hawkes recreates a more reckless and hasty Baochai deviated from the requirements of feudal female ethics. While by reducing the total number of process types and mental processes, increasing the modality value to express obligation and cutting interpersonal themes sharply, Yang presents a more aloof and reserved Baochai losing flexibility and sophistication. It is argued that the subjectivity of translators and their anticipations of readers play an important role in influencing their linguistic choices.

    Get PDF
In this paper, by taking first-principles software as examples, we apply computational materials science to the teaching process of undergraduates majoring in physics, chemistry and materials. We pay attention to the connection between theoretical research and experimental models, makes the abstract principle intuitive and dynamic, and facilitates students’ understanding of knowledge, a deep understanding of the structure of materials and the relationship between theoretical properties and macro properties, which can greatly enhance students’ initiative and creativity in participating in teaching activities. To a great extent, this has played a role of computational simulation as a bridge between theoretical teaching and experimental teaching to continue to explore the complementary relationship between computational simulation, theoretical teaching and experimental teaching, build a teaching model for the application and design ability training of materials and chemistry talents

This study examined perceived influence of lecturers’ ratings of accreditation exercise on quality assurance in universities in south east states in Nigeria. The study was carried out using two research questions and two hypotheses. The research design adopted for the study is a descriptive survey design which involved inferential approach. The population of the study comprise 3,843 members of academic staff of the five public state owned universities in south east geo-political zone of Nigeria. The sample for this study is 384 academic staff from the five state universities in the South East Geo-Political Zone of Nigeria. Proportionate cluster random sampling technique was used as the sampling technique for this study. The instrument used for collecting the data for the study is a rating scale titled: “Extent of Accreditation Exercise Influence on Quality Assurance Scale (EAEIQAS)”. The instrument was validated by two experts in Measurement and Evaluation and three experts in Educational Management. The reliability index of 0.80 was gotten for the instrument using Cronbach alpha statistics. The research questions were answered using mean score and standard deviation statistics while the hypotheses were tested using one sample t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The major findings are that the lecturers’ ratings of accreditation exercise on academic content of state universities in South East is high and significantly above average, and the ratings of accreditation exercise on staffing of state universities in South East is high and significantly above average. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the universities should improve more on their academic content as this will help to inculcate the required academic knowledge and skills to her graduates as a sign of quality indicator

Environmental Sustainability in Andalusian Rural Accommodation: Perceptions by Gender

    Get PDF
Social commitment through environmental interventions is becoming an increasingly important aspect of making decisions since ordinary citizens are becoming more demanding and, consequently, they analyse how companies can respond to this challenge. In this context, Spain, as a top provider of tourism services, is no stranger to this demand. This paper attempts to answer this question within one of the most promising types of tourism: rural tourism. Using second-generation statistical techniques (PLS-SEM), the impacts of environmental management on this type of tourism were analysed from the perspective of the client - and their gender - as an influential factor. The main results showed a marked influence of the environmental awareness in both genders, being customer participation the dimension in which differences were found as women seemed to be less active

Risk Communication Mechanisms in China Coping with the Risk of Digital Transformation of Society

    Get PDF
In the process of promoting the digital transformation of the society, digital platform companies will transform the previously uncontrollable uncertain damage into controllable uncertain damage by reasonable risk decisions. but at the same time, unreasonable risk decisions will cause new uncertain damage and it is the main source of risk in the digital society. How to motivate multiple risk stakeholders such as government, digital platform companies and the public to jointly make reasonable risk decisions and practices is the dilemma of risk management in digital society. China has opened up the governance of digital platform companies to the government and the public through a dual cycle system of risk decision-making. These Institutional innovations are aimed at transforming in-company business decisions into public decisions negotiated by multiple risk stakeholders through constructing risk communication mechanisms, thereby enhancing the transparency, democracy and accountability of risk decisions. However, there are many problems in the construction of specific communication mechanisms, which hinder the regional development of digital economy in Asia. China should learn from other’s experience and promote the convergence of risk communication mechanisms by more concrete measures

Difficultés des temps verbaux passé du français par les étudiants d’Izon

    Get PDF

The Thematic Complexity of Poverty, Relationships, Political Turmoil in Thailand, and Students’ Aspiration in Minfong Ho’s Rice Without Rain

    Get PDF
The purpose of this essay is to explain the themes of poverty, relationships, political turmoil in Thailand, and students’ aspiration in Ho’s Rice Without Rain (1986). The essay focuses on the thematic aspects of the novel in order to demonstrate how it thematically reflects the contemporary national affairs, epically political upheavals and students’ aspiration. The discussion of poverty, relationships, political turmoil in Thailand, and students’ aspiration will be closely related to the way by which Ho perceives the economic deterioration of poor people; and how she offers viable alternatives throughout the narrative structure of the novel. These alternatives are the optimistic narrative events that convey the core of national prosperity by getting rid of political turmoil, and reinforcing students’ aspiration. In doing so, the essay attempts to prove how the themes of poverty, relationships, political turmoil in Thailand, and students’ aspiration could really contribute to the reconciliation of the past and current political unrest in Thailand. Thus. The study’s methodology is descriptive i.e., it sheds light on the narrative description of poverty, relationships, and politics approached in the course of the novel.
