Parental Involvement and Academic Resilience as Predictors of Students’ Academic Engagement in Secondary Schools in Anambra State, Nigeria
Get PDFWithout proper engagement of students through the roles palyed by their parents and their teachers, students’ academic enegagement behaviour may deteriorate. This may be as a result of poor parental inolvment and poor academic resilience. Given this problem, this study examined parental involvement and academic resilience as predictors of academic engagement of secondary school students in Anambra State. The study adopted a correlational research design and guided by three research questions and three null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study comprised of 19708 senior secondary class two (SS2) students from which a sample size of 960 was drawn through a multi-stage simple random technique. Three instruments were used for the study titled: Parental Involvement Questionnaire (PIQ), Academic Resilience Questionnaire (ARQ) and Academic Engagement Questionnaire (AEQ) and validated by three experts in the field of Educational Psychology. The Cronbach Alpha method was adopted in determining the reliability of the instruments and they yielded alpha coefficients of 0.78, 0.70 and 0.81 for PIQ, ARQ and AEQ respectively. Data collected were analyzed using simple correlation for answering research questions and simple regression analyses for testing the null hypotheses. Findings indicated that both parental involvement and academic resilience have a positive relationship with academic engagement. It further showed that parental involvement and academic resilience jointly contributed positively to the academic engagement of secondary school students in Anambra State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that parents should continue to be involved in the education of their children which can boost the children’s resilience with a ripple effect of improving the academic engagement of their children
A Study of Sexuality and Gender in M. Butterfly Under the Context of Post-Colonial Feminism
Get PDFDavid Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly is a reinterpretation of the classic opera Madama Butterfly. He intends to expose to the readers the profound ideological imprints of racism, colonialism and patriarchy contained in Puccini’s oriental fantasy love tragedy, and to extend the discussion of such propositions as gender discrimination, racial prejudice, western misreading of the East and cultural hegemony that still exist in today’s society. This play serves as a vivid profiling of the particular historical situation suffered by Asians in the American racist environment. It is also progressive in that it challenges the stereotypes of Oriental women in Western literature. However, there is no denying that the deconstruction of colonialism and patriarchy in M. Butterfly is incomplete and inadequate. Taking a post-colonial feminist perspective as an entry point, this paper tries to analyze the orientalist colonial elements presented in M. Butterfly and focus on the sexuality and gender issues of the two main characters, Song Liling and Gallimard, hoping to help readers break out of the established framework and have a new understanding of the relationship between the West and the East, and between men and women.
Post-colonial Displacement and the Cultural Features of Indian Experience in Chitra Divakaruni’s Before We Visit the Goddess
Get PDFThis paper studies the cultural and social aspects of the Indian alienation and displacement in Chitra Divakaruni’s Before We Visit the Goddess. Displacement, moreover, designates the movement from homeland to a foreign or host land. Both the migratory people and the host land peoples are set in a cultural encounter which makes them different from each other. Such The cultural encounter is another definitive feature of postcolonial literature. Different cultures or ideologies conflict among each other in order to pose power by which each front tries to affirm its hegemonic position. Being that so, postcolonial literature provides a bustling vitality in accordance with the dominating power at the ultimate sense of this encounter. The powerful position, then, could construct its ideology and exerts its cultural insinuation via well-implemented procedures. Most significantly, the study sheds light on the language of postcolonial discourse which is the perennial tool used by writers to incarnate the scenario of these conflicting powers between the migratory people and their host land’s counterparts.
La progression thématique des textes produits par des apprenants sinophones du français langue étrangère
Get PDFEn nous appuyant sur la « perspective fonctionnelle de la phrase » du cercle de Prague, nous avons schématisé la progression thématique des textes produits par les apprenants d’origine sinophone durant leur apprentissage du français langue étrangère (désormais FLE). L’analyse que nous avons menée a révélé des traits caractérisant les écrits des apprenants issus de la culture rhétorique chinoise. Ces traits concernent respectivement la distance importante entre la reprise thématique et le référent initial, la rupture thématique plus récurrente et successive et la direction de la progression peu variée. Par ailleurs, cette contribution propose à la fin des paramètres d’ajustement servant à réguler la dynamique textuelle dans l’enseignement de l’écrit en FLE
The Effects of Task Complexity on English Writing Performance
Get PDFBased on Skehan’s Limited Attentional Capacity Model and Robinson’s Cognitive Hypothesis Model, and taking 79 sophomores from three parallel classes of English majors in Zhijiang College of Zhejiang University of Technology as subjects, this paper investigates the effects of three different types of writing tasks with different complexity on English majors’ English writing output. Three writing tasks are designed with different levels of complexity by controlling four variables: elements, reasoning demands, prior knowledge, single task. The research aims to find out the influence of writing tasks of different complexity on learners’ language performance (including accuracy, fluency and complexity), their total scores and the content of their compositions. The results show that task complexity has a significant impact on learners’ language accuracy and total writing scores; It has some but not very significant effects on learners’ lexical complexity, but it has no effect on language fluency and syntactic complexity. The study also finds that task types have a significant impact on students’ English writing content. The comprehensive writing task can measure students’ English writing ability more effectively, in that it triggers richer contents and optimized structures in students’ compositions

Effect of Microfinance Policy on Poverty Alleviation in Selected Southwest States in Nigeria
Get PDFThe economic state of Nigeria has brought about increase in the poverty level of citizens. This predicament led to a provision of microfinance policy to be a panacea to the down trodden and struggling economy of the country. This paper examined the effect of the policy on poverty alleviation in southwest, Nigeria. It made use of both primary and secondary data. The study population is 2,145 and sample size of 215 respondents, representing 10% of the loan beneficiaries and managers interviewed from the selected institutions adopted in this study. The findings show that microfinance policy improved the living condition of beneficiaries and increased their incomes. The study therefore concluded that the microfinance policy had a positive effect on poverty alleviation in selected southwest States in Nigeria

Examining Some Adapted Personal and Place Names in the Ewe Bible
Get PDFThis study examined some adapted personal and place names in the Ewe Bible. The purpose of the study was to: (i) find out how personal and place names were adapted from the English Holy Bible into the Ewe Bible by the translators (ii) find out the various forms of adaptation strategies employed and finally (iii) find out if the various adaptation strategies employed suffice the phonotactics of the Ewe language for the realization of their surface forms. The qualitative type of research design was employed in the study. The source of data was purely secondary since the English Holy Bible and the Ewe Holy Bible served as source of data. The study brought to light that non-native segments, clusters and codas were the illicitness the translators employed loanword adaptation strategies such as segmental adaptation, deletion and insertion/epenthesis to repair. Though the Ewe language recognizes these three loanword adaptation strategies, how the translators employed these strategies in adapting the personal and place names from the English Holy Bible into the Ewe Holy Bible does not suffice the phonotactics of the Ewe language. This has the tendency of making reading difficult on the part of readers of the Ewe Bible. Suggestion is therefore made that in future revision of the Ewe Bible, the translators should thoroughly abreast themselves with the grammars of both the source language and target language, so that the repair strategies would be employed judiciously in repairing various illicitness that may be found in the source document
