Using autoethnography to research independent music production as household innovation
Digitalization and datafication have brought structural changes to the music industry globally, creating new innovation opportunities as well as risks for industry role-players, including within the artist-audience relationship. In this context, extending the research understanding of independent music production, as Walzer has suggested, is increasingly important. This paper makes a methodological contribution to this research agenda, by demonstrating the use of autoethnography in the study of a household innovation system, and the use of autoethnographic data for reflection on knowledge acquisition and knowledge combination as well as barriers to and enablers of innovation. The paper also makes a conceptual contribution to the literature on innovation capabilities within African informal settings, arguing for a conception of knowledge informality as a distinct feature of knowledge that can be combined with more formal codified knowledges during innovation processes. For public policy to orient to resource-constrained and knowledge-diverse creative communities, new sources of data and types of analysis widen and deepen the evidence-base for creative industry development broadly, and independent music production in particular.

Is Zimbabwe’s education system disaster-ready? evaluating risk reduction strategies in Binga district schools
Building on the 2006 Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School campaign by the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction(ISDR),this study examines the role of formal education in enhancing hazard awareness and disaster preparedness among learners in Binga district, Zimbabwe a region that is highly exposed to recurring climate-induced hazards. Despite the implementation of various school-based DRR awareness and training initiatives , their efficacy remains largely unverified through empirical research. This study adopts a qualitative
research design, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to learners aged8–18 across 20 primary and secondary schools. Key indicators assessed include disaster knowledge, hazard education participation, preparedness levels, risk perception, and community engagement. A two-tier cluster sampling strategy stratifying Binga into northern and southern zones was employed to ensure geographical representation. Findings reveal that current DRR education initiatives are inadequate in cultivating comprehensive disaster resilience
among learners. The study calls for targeted programmatic improvements, including curriculum integration ,teacher capacity development, and stronger school-community DRR linkages.
Integrating indigenous and modern knowledge systems for household food security in the smallholder irrigation schemes in South Africa
There is currently a debate on the role of modern and indigenous knowledge systems in the smallholder farming sector. While the modern knowledge systems have been viewed as superior and are being touted as key towards meeting sustainable development goals, especially goal two of eradicating hunger, the performance of smallholder farmers utilizing modern systems remains below expectations. The performance of farmers using indigenous knowledge systems has not resulted in better outcomes either. There are growing calls for an integration of the two knowledge systems to co-produce solutions relevant to smallholder farmers. However, not much is known about the extent to which this is already happening, how the integration is happening, and welfare effects of this integration. This paper assessed the extent to which smallholder irrigators integrate indigenous and modern knowledge; and whether this integration has resulted in improvements in cost reduction, productivity, and welfare levels. A sample size of 392 farmers in four irrigation schemes of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape were interviewed. The results showed that the majority (52%) of the farmers integrated knowledge systems, while 10% and 38% relied on indigenous and modern systems, respectively. Farmers actively incorporated modern knowledge to enhance their traditional practices in their production methods in response to local challenges or opportunities. The results indicate that high maize yields attained by modern users were eroded by high inputs cost, while integrators were able to significantly reduce input costs (such as fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide costs) and the money saved was used to purchase more food, hence improving household food security. The results suggest that government, private institutions and NGOs should build on farmers’ agencies to plug-in modern knowledge into the indigenous knowledge systems through appropriate research and innovations rather than completely replacing indigenous systems with modern farming systems. Extension officers should change their mindset and acknowledge the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge into their training so that what is relevant to farmers may be adopted, thus enhancing sustainability and resilience of development efforts in developing countries.
Service delivery, moral political capital and democratic legitimacy: a case study of Langa and Wentworth, South Africa
This article is a case study of the experiences of residents of two historically disadvantaged communities, Langa Township, which is an historically black African township in the Western Cape, and Wentworth, an historically ‘coloured’ township in KwaZulu-Natal, of the first 30 years of democratic rule. The focus is on services and governance and regenerating moral political capital and democratic legitimacy. Use is made of insights found in
qualitative interviews conducted with residents of the two residential areas on the delivery of services in five priority areas, the impact of their perceptions of the delivery of services on the moral political capital of the ruling political party and the legitimacy of the new democracy, and on how moral political capital and democratic legitimacy can be regenerated. The key finding is that most residents of the two areas believed that their lives have not improved in these priority areas in the first 30 years of democracy, and have worsened in some cases, and that this illustrates a loss of moral political capital because the ruling political party has failed to live up to its promise of a better life for all, as well as a loss of democratic legitimacy because the democratic state has not served their particular interests. The article informs political leaders and policy makers and implementers of the steps to be taken to regenerate both moral political capital and the legitimacy of the democracy that was established in 1994.
Does ESG Affect Credit Risk?
Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns became increasingly crucial for financial institutions, including banks, as they faced new types of risks associated with ESG factors. This study aims to investigate how these ESG dimensions affected non-performing loans (NPLs) in banks across ASEAN countries. With rising investor demand for sustainable practices and intensified regulatory pressures, incorporating ESG risks into risk management frameworks became imperative. This study uses panel data regression analysis along with the Chow and Hausman tests to assess the impact of ESG factors on NPL. The sample comprised banks from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, selected based on Refinitiv Eikon's ESG values. The findings revealed that while environmental and governance performance had a statistically significant negative impact on NPLs, indicating that better environmental and governance practices were associated with fewer loan defaults, social performance showed a statistically significant positive effect on NPLs, suggesting that higher social scores correlated with increased loan defaults. This study highlighted the need for banks to carefully balance their social initiatives with financial stability and underscored the importance of integrating ESG factors into risk management strategies to enhance overall financial health and sustainability
Pada 2022, Indonesia memiliki prevalence of undernourishment sebesar 5,9%, sekitar 16,2 juta orang.
