#FeesMustFall: lessons from the post-colonial global South

    No full text
The protests that engulfed South African universities in 2015 and 2016 revealed a dissatisfaction by students with regard to higher education fees. This article looks at some of the lessons that could assist South Africa in understanding the role of universal fee-free higher education or fee-free higher education for the poor. Most countries in the post-colonial global South indicate a shift to cost-sharing as mounting financial pressures on state budgets make universal free education unsustainable. The current study shows that the cost-sharing model in South Africa has not resonated with students and may also be exclusionary to poor students. The lessons from the post-colonial global South show that the trend in higher education is that the poor are often left out of most fee structures - including dual track, universal fee-free, and cost-sharing models. The current study explores some implications and considerations of the current means test model that has been introduced by the current South African president, while using the global South as reference point for the implications of this fee structure, particularly in relation to poor and working-class students.

High recent PrEP adherence with point-of-care urine tenofovir testing and adherence counselling among young African women: results from the INSIGHT cohort

    No full text
Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) account for two-thirds of new HIV infections in Africa. African AGYW have had high uptake of oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) but low adherence, which might be improved by point-of-care adherence monitoring with tailored counselling. From August 2022 to July 2023, we conducted a PrEP demonstration project with sexually active AGYW ages 16−30 years from 20 sites in South Africa, Eswatini, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and Zambia. Participants were offered oral tenofovir-based PrEP at enrolment and followed up at 1, 3 and 6 months. PrEP adherence was assessed by a point-of-care qualitative lateral flow urine tenofovir (TFV) assay indicating PrEP use in the prior 4 days, which accompanied real-time adherence counselling that incorporated urine TFV results when testing was available (70.8% of month 1, 35.3% of month 3 and 83.9% of month 6 visits). We estimated overall adherence, correcting for missing test results, and analysed the association of having received urine TFV results at month 1 or 3 with subsequent urine TFV test positivity, using modified Poisson regression.

The Influence of Customer Satisfaction and Moderation Role of Customer Trust in the Relationship to Customer Loyalty in Digital Banking

    Get PDF
This research explores how customer trust influences the connection between satisfaction and loyalty, as reflected in share-of-wallet (SOW) and word-of-mouth (WOM) within the context of digital banking. This is done primarily in Indonesia, where digital banking is flourishing, and the study conducted is scarce. A quantitative approach was adopted, utilizing purposive sampling to gather responses from 278 Indonesian digital banking users. The PLS-SEM approach was used to analyze the relationships between key variables through structural equation modeling (SEM). The research revealed that customer satisfaction is significantly affected by factors such as ease of use, service innovation, and the perceived advantages of a product. Additionally, it demonstrated that customer satisfaction significantly affects both the proportion of a customer’s spending and word-of-mouth recommendations. However, contrary to expectations, the study found no evidence that trust moderates the link between satisfaction and share-of-wallet (SAT-SOW) or satisfaction and word-of-mouth (SAT-WOM) within the digital banking sector. This research expands knowledge in the field of digital banking marketing and builds upon prior studies focused on customer-centric service marketing. The study presents a framework that identifies the value associated with SOW and WOM in a modern digital banking service. These findings are beneficial for digital banks, as they can use them to refine their strategies and operations with a customer-centric approach. This, in turn, can help them build lasting, profitable customer relationships and enhance their long-term retention

Shattered Barriers and Resilient Voices: Depictions of Discrimination in Peter Farrelly's Green Book (2018)

    Get PDF
Racial discrimination remains a pervasive issue in media representations, shaping societal perceptions and reinforcing systemic inequalities. The film Green Book (2018) portrays the racial discrimination experienced by Dr. Don Shirley, yet the deeper impact on his identity and social struggles requires further examination. This study aims to analyze the depiction of racial discrimination in Green Book and its effects on Shirley’s identity through a qualitative approach combining sociological theory and narrative film analysis. Data were collected from film dialogues, scenes, and academic literature and analyzed using discourse and cinematographic elements to reveal underlying social dynamics. Findings show that discrimination in the film is systemic, rooted in institutional and social structures that marginalize Shirley despite his cultural and economic capital. The film also perpetuates the “white savior” narrative, which diminishes Shirley’s agency by emphasizing Tony Lip’s role. Intersectionality reveals how overlapping factors of race, class, and masculinity shape Shirley’s experience. This study highlights the importance of nuanced media portrayals to challenge racial hierarchies and recommends further research on the influence of films on public perceptions of systemic racism
