To determine the difference in serum Progesterone-Induced Blocking Factor (PIBF) levels in first-trimester pregnant women between abortion imminent and normal pregnancy. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional method involving 54 research subjects consisting of 27 pregnant women with imminent abortion and 27 pregnant women with normal pregnancies. The dependent variable in this study was serum PIBF levels. In the imminent abortion group, PIBF levels had a mean of 59.43 ng/mL with a standard deviation of 9.05 ng/mL, a median value of 58.24 ng/mL with the smallest value of 47.95 ng/mL, and the largest value of 75.82 ng/mL. There was a correlation between gestational age (p<0.001) and PIBF levels with a strong negative correlation level (r= -0.775). In the normal pregnancy group, PIBF levels had a mean of 111.53 ng/mL with a standard deviation of 24.71 ng/mL, a median value of 108.51 ng/mL with the smallest value of 79.88 ng/mL, and the largest value of 191.14 ng/mL. There was a correlation between gestational age (p=0.049) and PIBF levels with a moderately positive correlation level (r=0.361). There was a significant difference in PIBF levels (p<0.001) between the abortion imminent group and the normal pregnancy group. Subjects with PIBF levels <77.85 ng/mL were at risk for imminent abortion than subjects with PIBF levels > 77.85 ng/mL. PIBF levels were significantly lower in the abortion imminent group than in the normal pregnancy group. In the abortion imminent group, an increase in gestational age was moderately correlated with a decrease in PIBF levels

The purpose of this article is to review and analyze various scientific literature related to the relationship between the quality of pharmaceutical services and patient satisfaction in pharmacies. The methodology used in this article is a narrative literature study of a number of national and international scientific publications published in the last five to ten years. Literature sources are obtained from databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Garuda Portal. The inclusion criteria include articles that contain discussions about pharmaceutical service quality indicators, patient satisfaction aspects in community pharmacies, and studies that use quantitative and/or qualitative approaches. This article examines the dimensions of service quality based on the SERVQUAL framework (tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy) as well as special aspects of pharmaceutical services such as pharmacist involvement in therapeutic communication, drug use education, and time and queue management. The results of the review showed that there was a significant relationship between the quality of pharmaceutical services and the level of patient satisfaction. The dimensions of responsiveness and assurance, which include the ability of pharmacists to provide fast service and clear and convincing explanations, are the dominant factors in shaping patients' positive perceptions of service quality. The availability and completeness of the drug is also a technical factor that greatly affects satisfaction, where the unreadiness of stock often leads to disappointment. In addition, the physical aspects of the pharmacy such as the comfort of the waiting room, cleanliness, and layout are also important indicators in the patient experience. Pharmacists' interpersonal communication skills and empathetic attitude towards patients are the main determinants in building trust and loyalty relationships between patients and pharmacy services This conclusion confirms that the quality of pharmaceutical services has a significant contribution to the level of patient satisfaction in pharmacies. Therefore, improving service quality must be a strategic priority for pharmacy management, focusing on improving pharmacist competence, service process efficiency, consistent drug availability, and optimization of pharmacy facilities. The practical implications of the results of this study can be a reference for policy makers, pharmacy managers, and pharmacists in designing interventions to improve the quality of services based on patient needs and expectations. Further research is recommended to develop a more comprehensive and contextual pharmaceutical service quality measurement instrument with local conditions

The Transmigration Program has been made a priority in long-term development in Indonesia with the hope of improving the quality of life of transmigrants and indigenous peoples in the destination area. Transmigration is part of the national transmigration program that aims for equitable regional development and is one of the ones that has experienced a significant impact from this program in the Saluandeang Transmigration Settlement Unit, Central Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province. The challenge of the Saluandeang Transmigration Settlement Unit is the problem of transmigrants, both immigrants and local/local communities who become transmigrants, do not receive skills training at the location of the transmigration destination, so that transmigrants do not have the skills to cultivate transmigration land into productive land that can improve the welfare of transmigrants. In addition, transmigrants have not been able to adapt to the new environment, so there is a desire to leave the transmigration location and the land given to transmigrants has not been able to be processed properly and there is a conflict/occupation with the local community. Although there have been some achievements socially and economically, challenges remain, especially in terms of providing training to transmigrants after placement in new transmigration locations, to be able to be independent by having the ability to have skills that can cultivate the land given to transmigrants both to transmigrants from the area of origin and local transmigrants. The success of transmigration programs in the future will depend largely on how these challenges are addressed with a more inclusive and sustainable approach   &nbsp

Having a pet is a dream come true for many children. However, it will not happen without their parents’ approval.  A common reason is because the parents hesitate to believe the children still have no responsibilities to take care of the pets. Yet, allowing children the opportunity to care for a pet can be a valuable way for them to learn about responsibility. The parents that gave permission for the children to have pets are teaching and explaining the tasks and responsibilities to take care of pets, such as what kind of handling or treatments that can make them happy, sad, angry, or even hurt the pets but also the caregiver. Books become one of the most effective and advantageous media for the children and the parents. Through books, children can learn to read, add more vocabularies, entertain themselves, and learn the guides to take care of pets. At the same time, the book is a guide for the parents to teach and support their children

Military coups in West Africa and the Sahel as impediments towards the achievement of the African Union-Agenda 2063, Aspirations (3) and (4)

    No full text
In an attempt to transform Africa into a global powerhouse of the future, the African Union (AU) championed Agenda 2063, which serves as Africa’s developmental blueprint towards achieving inclusive and equitable socio-economic development over 50 years. However, close to 10 years after its implementation, Africa is still battling with challenges such as a resurgence of military coups and Unconstitutional Changes of Government (UCG). Recently, these military coups occurred mainly in West Africa and the Sahel regions. Although AU-Agenda 2063 is founded on seven Aspirations, this chapter will focus on Aspiration 3 (good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice, and the rule of law) and Aspiration 4 (a peaceful and secure Africa). Findings are that the resurgence of military coups in West Africa and the Sahel are hindrances towards attaining AU-Agenda 2063 Aspirations 3 and 4. Instead of these states consolidating their democracies and adhering to the rule of law, they experienced democratic reversals and the rise of authoritarianism. Ultimately, this impedes Aspirations 3 and 4 of the AU. Thus, instead of silencing the guns by 2030, 124Security-Development Nexus in Africa the military has turned these guns against their own states. Furthermore, demerits of military rule include the suppression of human rights, limited opposition, and lack of capacity to address the many pre-coups socio-economic challenges which pose security threats in both regions. This qualitative literature assessment will adopt content analysis to produce the study findings. This chapter intends to respond to three related objectives: (i) to explore the root causes of military coups in West Africa and the Sahel, (ii) to examine how military coups in these regions serve as impediments towards the achievement of the AU-Agenda 2063 Aspirations (3) and (4), and (iii) to evaluate the AU’s response to these coups d’état and UCGs.

Perceptions and experiences of nondiabetic Cameroonian immigrants in Minnesota on access to affordable, culturally adapted healthcare services

    No full text
Cameroonian immigrants, like many ethnic minority groups, face disproportionately high risks of type 2 diabetes due to barriers in accessing culturally responsive and affordable healthcare. This study explores their healthcare experiences, perceptions, and knowledge of diabetes prevention and self-management to identify gaps in healthcare delivery and opportunities for culturally adapted interventions. Using a phenomenological approach, 13 nondiabetic Cameroonian immigrants were purposively selected for in-depth interviews. Data were transcribed, manually coded, and analyzed using NVivo 14 software to identify recurring themes related to healthcare interactions and diabetes prevention efforts. Participants frequently reported leaving medical appointments without fully understanding their healthcare providers’ advice, leading to confusion and poor health outcomes. Many expressed frustration over the lack of integration between psychosocial and physical health needs in their care. Additionally, they emphasized the need for culturally tailored health education, particularly regarding portion control and the nutritional value of traditional foods, to support healthier dietary habits. This study underscores the urgent need for culturally sensitive healthcare approaches that address the holistic needs of immigrant communities. Strengthening provider-patient communication, fostering trust, and incorporating culturally relevant dietary guidance can enhance diabetes prevention and self-management efforts among Cameroonian immigrants. Healthcare systems should implement culturally tailored interventions to reduce health disparities and improve provider-patient interactions. Training healthcare providers to adopt a more holistic approach—integrating both psychosocial and physical health considerations—can lead to better health outcomes. Additionally, promoting culturally relevant education on diabetes prevention and management can empower immigrant populations to make informed health decisions and adopt sustainable self-care practices.

From Johannesburg’s riverbanks: navigating the Jukskei

    No full text
It is often remarked that Johannesburg is exceptional as a major city in that it has no large body of water. While it may be true that the city does not boast commercial harbours, busy canals, or navigable rivers, spruits and wetlands saturate the city, and are home to many of its non-human inhabitants. These have largely been overlooked as participants in the urbanization of Johannesburg despite shaping, and being shaped by, the city’s development. This book’s focus on the Jukskei river—in which some of the first gold was found on the Witwatersrand—invites a re-centering of waterways as a device to organize how we think about this baffling city.N/

    No full text
HSRC Policy Brief, MarchKey messages from this policy brief: 1. Gender equality legislation exists in South Africa, although implementation is not enforced. 2. Enforcement is encumbered by lack of an overarching enforcing legislation. The signing of the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill must be fast-tracked, and an enforcement legislation framework introduced. 3. Policy actions to stimulate public discourses around approval and adoption of the overarching enforcement legislation are needed.N/

South Africa’s National Science Week: contribution to the promotion of diversity and inclusion in STEM education and engagement

    No full text
South Africa is dedicated to establishing itself as a global leader in science and technology. Achieving this ambitious goal requires a concerted effort to cultivate a scientifically literate society. Each year, the country hosts the National Science Week (NSW) to celebrate and promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The initiative aims to enhance understanding and engagement, and foster interest in STEM careers to develop human capabilities in STEM. Using data collected from the 2023 NSW grant holders, we explored the reach of the event and grant holders’ priorities for involvement in the NSW, in relation to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM. In terms of reach, eight provinces had more than half female participation and seven had more than 90 % Black African participation. Many grant holders targeted no-fee schools and those located in areas of high socioeconomic risk, thus providing opportunities for the most vulnerable learners 1 to be exposed to STEM. Grant holders also focused beyond schools on the inclusion of different sectors of society, including tertiary students, scientists, science interpreters, government officials and the general public. Grant holders revealed an explicit focus on promoting STEM education for all students, supporting STEM subjects and careers, expanding science awareness and developing a scientifically literate society, highlighting the role of science in everyday life, emphasizing the role of science and evidence-based research in tackling societal problems, and encouraging collaboration. This paper emphasises the importance of events such as the NSW in advancing STEM awareness, education and engagement through the promotion of diversity and inclusion and thereby contributing to the cultivation of a more scientifically literate South African society.
