Design of an Educational Cyber Range
The Cyber Range concept arose as a method for organizations to provide realistic training in penetration testing and incident response. These ranges often utilize virtualization to reduce cost and allow for rapid reconfiguration. However, virtualization management software is often expensive or difficult to install. This paper presents a management application using open-source software with the intent of allowing educators to rapidly create virtual ranges at minimal cost
Experimental Study of a Turbulent Impinging Jet in an Undergraduate Heat Transfer Laboratory
In many industrial applications, a single gas jet or array of jets can impinge upon a surface to enhance heating, cooling or drying effects. This forced convection phenomenon is covered in several heat transfer textbooks in undergraduate engineering courses. An experimental apparatus was developed for students to measure the convection heat transfer coefficient of a single and array of round impinging jets of air upon a resistively heated flat plate. The jet or jet array is directed on one side of the thin plate while the temperature distribution is measured using an infrared camera on the back side. An energy balance allows for estimation of the local and average convection coefficients, presented as non-dimensional Nusselt numbers, which are then compared against correlations in the literature. Experiments with various Reynolds numbers and separation distances between the nozzle and plate are in agreement with correlations, for both a single jet and hexagonal array of 7 jets. This apparatus will be implemented into a laboratory exercise for the heat transfer course at the United States Military Academy
What Every Boss Wants: Forecasting
It was the first day at my new unit. As a staff officer I wasn’t surprised when the Battalion Executive Officer (XO), my new boss, motioned me into his office for a chat. What he said next left me speechless. I anticipated the normal “welcome to the unit” speech, but instead he offered one sentence worth of guidance and sent me on my way: “forecast my needs and that of the unit and you will succeed here.” What exactly did he mean by this? How does one forecast without additional information? Where should I start? What should the priority be? How far out should I forecast? The Adventures of ScriptKitty: Using the Raspberry Pi to Teach Adolescents about Internet Safety
Internet safety and privacy considerations are increasingly important topics for adolescents. While online games and other media exist to introduce middle school and high school students to security and privacy concepts, there are very few practical exercises that reinforce concepts in a hands-on manner. In this paper, we introduce The Adventures of ScriptKitty, a free on-line learning aid that is used in conjunction with the Raspberry Pi single board computer.We piloted The Adventures of ScriptKitty to 51middle school and high school students. Our results show that students significantly improved their understanding of basic network topics and felt more confident on how to stay safe on the Internet

Level of Agreement Between Human-Rated and Instrumented Balance Error Scoring System Scores.
Clinicians have used the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) to quantify postural control for concussion management. However, the reliability of the human rated BESS has varied prompting the development of instrumented BESSs. A cross-sectional design was used to determine the level of agreement (LOA) between human rated and instrumented BESS scores. Sixty participants completed the BESS on video. An instrumented mat was used to quantify BESS errors while a live human rater simultaneously scored the BESS. A second human rated BESS performance via video. Bland-Altman LOA analyses evaluated agreement between scoring methods (Mat-Human, Mat-Video, Video-Live) for each stance. Mean biases between scores, for each stance, with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were calculated. Agreement between scoring methods was not assessed for the Firm-Double-Limb stance because very few errors were recorded. Agreement between both human raters and the mat was poor based on mean bias estimates \u3e ± 1 and/or wide 95%CIs for all stances including BESS-Total. Agreement between the human raters was better, having displayed consistently smaller mean bias estimates and tighter 95%CIs for all stances and BESS Total. As a result, human rated and instrumented BESS scores may not be comparable. One method should be used to measure BESS errors for consistency
