Full text linkThis article discusses the calculus modernization initiative at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), which began in fall 2020 in response to guidance from the Mathematical Association of America, changes in science and technology, and direction from leadership in the United States Air Force (USAF) and United States Space Force (USSF). The calculus curriculum at USAFA has remained largely unchanged for decades, and many cadets struggle with the numeracy and algebra skills required to succeed in traditional college calculus courses; changes in technology have created opportunities to reimagine how calculus is taught. This articles describes the modernization process and argues that it provides cadets the needed skills to succeed academically, while emphasizing the importance of data literacy and acumen in countering near peer adversaries
Improving Inventory for a Large Food Service Supplier
Full text linkGolden State Foods (GSF) is an international food service supplier. Their Georgia manufacturing plant currently produces thousands of condiments for restaurants across the United States. This project analyzed the inventory policies of seasonal ingredients, in order to decrease GSF’s working capital and inventory holding costs. By inputting product recipes, ingredient usage, and weekly inventory data into a dynamic lot-sizing model, we predict optimal order quantities and reorder points for GSF’s seasonal and expensive ingredients. This will potentially decrease the facility’s $1.2 million holding cost and increase its long-term profits compared to the status quo
