A Comprehensive Study: Exploring the Impact of Commodity: Attributes on Art Consumption and Purchase Decisions

    No full text
The art market is complex and dynamic since art is no longer just cultural artifacts but also commodities sold in the art market. As such, consumers, mostly art enthusiasts and investors, make choices based on many factors. This paper investigates the role of commodity attributes of art in art consumption and purchase, among other motivating factors. Commodity attributes can range from tangible to intangible art features influencing consumers\u27 desire to purchase or consume art. Through an extensive review of available literature, this study identifies some commodity attributes closely linked to art consumption and purchase. It explores the impact of design aesthetics, art and artists\u27 reputation, rarity and uncertainty, and price on the art enthusiast\u27s perception of value and purchasing decision of particular arts. It further delves into the motivation based on needs, socio-demography, and individual emotional attachments that influences purchase decision and consumption of art. The study employs quantitative and qualitative data-gathering methods through a survey using questionnaires. The questionnaires that have both close-ended and open- ended questions aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between commodity attributes of art and other motivation on customers\u27 purchasing andconsumption decisions of art. The questionnaires are spread through google surveys to art enthusiasts, not limited to collectors and galleries. The study\u27s findings determine that aesthetic design, rarity and uncertainty, art and artist reputation, and price significantly influence the decision to purchase art. It furtherdetermines that individuals need self-actualization and finance security, equallyinfluencing the decision to purchase art. Further, the study determines the socio- demographic factors such as age, level of education, cultural background, an income levels also influence the decision to purchase art. The study\u27s findings will contribute to the existing literature on art marketing, consumer behavior, and cultural influence on art. The study\u27s outcome will aid art market shareholders, not limited to artists, galleries, and collectors, in developing proper strategies to sell art and engage consumers

Formed by Fire: A Global Story of Women and Clay

In 1971, art historian Linda Nochlin implored the art world to be introspective of its long-held, male-centered narratives when she published the profound essay ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’ Nochlin articulated the individual and societal factors that have disadvantaged women collectively and have historically kept them from receiving the same level of recognition as male artists for the same quality of work. This essay, compounded with growing feminist sentiments of the late 20th century, insighted art world institutions to highlight and recontextualize the art of women. These institutional efforts have culminated in female artists having a renaissance in the last fifteen years as the 2022 Burns Halperin Report purported that in 2009 museum acquisitions of female artists peaked only to have a resurgence in 2018 following the #MeToo movement. As acquisitions were reaching their peak in 2009, the major traveling exhibition WACK!: Art and the Feminist Revolution was completing its run across the United States and Canada. This show was the first major survey of art made under the influence of Feminism. Over a decade later, the trajectory of inclusivity has brought more groundbreaking shows like Artemisia at the National Gallery of Art in London in 2020, the first solo exhibition of the Italian Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi in the United Kingdom. These two exhibitions demonstrate the range of shows that have been developed to highlight the art of women and facilitate a more holistic narrative of art history. The reality is that a significant portion of exhibitions on women artists favor the works of fine artists, leaving women dedicated to craft and applied artforms to go underrepresented in exhibition offerings. A significant demand for female fine artists has been established and continues to grow, making now an opportune moment to leverage that demand and include major exhibitions on female applied artists. Formed by Fire: A Global Story of Women and Clay will specifically feature female ceramic artists from 1870 until now who originate from multiple cultures and time periods. Previous scholarship and exhibitions have kept the stories and art of female ceramic artists isolated by their respective cultures or time periods. Placing this art in a new dialogue will result in a visual progression of the ceramic medium through the work of women and it will show synergies between cultures that have previously been unseen. Every woman and culture will have a unique perspective on the medium and its purpose, but there are undeniable similarities present in works form opposing sides of the globe that deserve to be displayed. As a historical survey, Formed by Fire provides an educational through line that will show audiences how one medium can evolve from being perceived solely as a craft to become one of the most adaptable and innovative art forms today. The path that the medium of ceramics has taken since 1870 has been immense and beautiful, and largely facilitated by women who now deserve to be spotlighted for their collective contributions

Himalayan Murals, Himalayan Buddhist Murals: Styles, Symbolic Themes and Historical Evolution

Himalayan Buddhist murals are decorative elements and represent profound artistic expressions laden with relevant cultural and religious values. Disseminated through monasteries and temples of the Himalayan regions, such as Tibet, Bhutan, and Nepal, these murals represent a unique blend of religious art and cultural identity. According to Jackson, mural art was a longterm tradition in these areas, starting from the eleventh Century and being influenced by different schools of Buddhism throughout history. Jing further posits that the tradition of art reflects an active interaction between religious concepts and local art styles, influenced by socio-political transformations and cultural contacts between the Himalayan populace and occupants of neighboring regions. Therefore, an exploration of Himalayan mural is integral in deciphering the sociocultural dynamics of the Himalayan belt

The Effects of AI Image Synthesis on Graphic Design

From 1763 when Thomas Bayes developed a framework to infer event probabilities, to the end of 2022 when the world-renowned AI research laboratory Open AI launched Chat GPT, a language model based on AI technology, statistical computing-based AI has revolutionized human life. AI image synthesis can simulate the processes and methods of human painting through machine learning, deep learning, and other methods, thereby generating high-fidelity images. There is growing concern about how AI image synthesis will affect the art world as it advances. The art market could be reimagined, authorship and creativity concepts challenged, and traditional artistic practices disrupted by this technology. During this process, AI image synthesis can not only improve the efficiency and accuracy of drawing but also reduce costs and time, thereby influencing the market pattern of the graphic design industry. As a new art category, AI art is undergoing an evolution from imitating traditional art media to being an independent art medium. Provide insights into the opportunities and challenges presented by this technology by examining the effects of AI image synthesis. Artists can learn more about how AI can help or hurt them in their creative process and think about new ways to work with AI systems. In addition, this study will contribute to a broader discussion of AI ethics and copyright concerns in the art industry

This thesis explores the transformative impact of Saudi Arabia\u27s contemporary artmarket within the context of the nation\u27s broader socio-economic reform, driven byVision 2030. This comprehensive study examines the dual role of the Saudi art market as both a catalyst for and a reflection of societal changes, aligning with the ambitious goals set forth by Vision 2030. This initiative seeks to diversify the Saudi economy away from oil dependency and to promote cultural and economic development through strategic investments in the arts. The research employs a multifaceted methodology, relying heavily on primary data from interviews with various stakeholders in the Saudi art market, including policymakers, gallery owners, collectors, and artists. This is supplemented by financial reports, scholarly articles, and media sources, providing a robust framework for understanding the intricate dynamics of the art market and its interplay with cultural policy and economic objectives. Central to the thesis is the analysis of how the Saudi art market is strategically used to foster cultural transformation and enhance economic diversification. It examines the interaction between public initiatives and private sector contributions to the art scene, assessing their collective impact on the Kingdom\u27s cultural ecosystem. The study also contrasts the Saudi art market with those of other Gulf countries and Western benchmarks, highlighting unique strategies and outcomes. Moreover, the thesis discusses the secondary impacts of the art market on Saudi society and the broader cultural community. It evaluates how the art market not only reflects but also actively shapes modern Saudi identity, promoting a narrative of modernisation and openness that challenges traditional perceptions both within and outside the Kingdom. The findings of this study contribute significantly to the understanding of contemporary art markets within the Middle East, offering insights into the complex relationship between art and socio-economic development. By exploring the Saudi example, this thesis enriches the academic discourse on cultural economics and provides valuable perspectives for policymakers, cultural practitioners, and scholars interested in the transformative power of art markets in societal development. This research underscores the importance of cultural investment as part of economic diversification strategies and highlights the potential of the Saudi art market as a leading model for integrating cultural advancement with economic and social reform in the 21st century

When Divergent Worlds Collide: Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s Influence on the Surrealism Movement

    No full text
Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s drawings were created for the sole purpose of illustrating his newly discovered and earth-shattering revelations in the field of neuroscience culminating with his magnum opus: the “Neuron theory” and the “Theory of Dynamic Polarization.” For these discoveries and many others, he shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology with his rival Dr. Camilo Golgi, an Italian pathologist. At no time did he envision that his drawings would capture the interest of artists as it did with members of the Surrealism Movement. This thesis will explore and present for the first time supporting evidence that members of the Surrealism Movement, Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali to name a few, met and had conversations with Cajal while others in the group such Andre Breton, Fedrico García Lorca, and Leonora Carrington were well aware of his massive collection of drawings and incorporated his ideas and images into some of their own artwork. This thesis will explore the interconnectivity of two divergent worlds: the scientific world of Dr. Cajal and the artistic world of Surrealism

Emanations: Series of Works by Tobi Kahn

    No full text
This exhibition will be a solo show of American abstract expressionist artist Tobi Kahn. Kahn is a painter, sculptor, and installation artist living and working in New York City. He was born in 1952 and received his bachelor\u27s degree from Hunter College in 1975. He later earned his Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in 1978. Kahn began his art career as a photographer and has used photographs as the basis for all of his artworks. While his artwork is heavily influenced by his Jewish heritage and spirituality, he is also a great admirer of nature and the natural world–specifically flowers and trees, the physical human form, and landscapes. The breadth of his work covers these topics and many more. Memory and indelible impressions branded into his soul are the foundation for all of his artistic creations. He is known for his use of color and texture, and his work often incorporates materials such as gold leaf, natural pigments, and stone. Kahn’s art has been exhibited in many galleries and museums including The Jewish Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has received numerous awards and grants for his work including a National Endowments for the Arts Fellowship and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. He has a very large collector base and has been commissioned to create both large- and small-scale pieces for individuals as well as institutions. He has enjoyed many solo and group shows during his 40-year-plus career. In addition to his work as an artist, Kahn is also a teacher and lecturer and has taught at numerous institutions including the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Jerusalem Studio School in Israel. My personal story with Tobi began many years ago when he was a struggling young artist and I was an adolescent with a desire to learn how to paint. I was fortunate enough to join an after-school program at our synagogue in New Jersey, where Tobi was hired to teach a group of students the fundamentals of drawing, sketching, and painting. Little did I know that this experience would shape my journey in significant ways. Fast forward to years later, when I crossed paths with Tobi\u27s gallerist in Florida. I couldn\u27t believe that the established artist she represented was the same person who had once been my teacher. It felt like a fortuitous reunion, and we quickly rekindled our friendship. As time went on, my admiration for Tobi\u27s artistic talent only grew, and I became one of his dedicated collectors. Tobi often describes our connection as a full circle moment, and I couldn\u27t agree more. From being his former student to now curating one of his shows, it is a testament to the impact he had on my life. His mentorship and guidance were instrumental in my decision to study Art Business at the master\u27s level. 1 Having a front-row seat to witness Tobi\u27s artistic evolution has been incredibly gratifying and educational. It\u27s a dream come true to be able to curate a show for an artist who has played such a pivotal role in my life. The opportunity allows me to showcase Tobi\u27s incredible body of work and contribute to the narrative of his artistic journey. This experience has only deepened my appreciation for Tobi\u27s talent, creativity, and dedication. It is a privilege to share his art with others and play a role in shaping the legacy of such an important figure in the art world. I plan to curate an actual show in New York City in late January, February, or March of 2024. The exact date will be determined based on Tobi\u27s schedule and the availability of a suitable location. Tobi has distinct specifications for his exhibitions, particularly regarding lighting and other details that must be adhered to. I have been in close communication with Tobi to ensure his availability for the exhibition. We are working together to find a timeframe within the aforementioned months that aligns with his schedule and allows for ample time to prepare for the show. Finding the right venue is a crucial aspect of curating this exhibition. I have been scouting potential locations throughout New York City, considering factors such as the space layout, lighting options, and logistical aspects that are important to Tobi. It is essential to settle on a venue that meets his artistic vision and can accommodate his specific requirements. Tobi is very particular about lighting, as it plays a significant role in the presentation of his artwork. I am collaborating closely with him to ensure that his desired lighting conditions are met. Apart from the artistic aspects, I will handle the logistical aspects of the exhibition. This includes organizing the transportation of artworks, overseeing the installation process, and coordinating signage, promotional materials, and social media. A successful exhibition relies on effective marketing and promotion. I am developing a comprehensive strategy to generate excitement and attract a diverse audience to the show. This includes social media posts, possible press releases, and targeted invitations to art enthusiasts, collectors, and the broader public. Curating this exhibition for Tobi is an incredible honor and an exciting opportunity. I am dedicated to executing his vision and creating an immersive experience for visitors. By paying meticulous attention to his specifications and collaborating closely with him, I am confident that we will create a successful show in New York City that reflects the depth and uniqueness of Tobi\u27s artistic talent. While Tobi has had many shows focused on a specific series, he has never had a show that showcases multiple series at the same time. In addition, he has many never-before-seen pieces from his archives that he would like to display at this exhibit. Emanations will introduce the public to between four and six piece
