Cultural Heritage and Market Dynamics: A Transatlantic Perspective on Art Regulation
This thesis investigates the complex and intricate relationship between legal frameworks, economic policies, cultural practices, and art market performances and how these dynamics influence how art is traded and appreciated. Adopting a comparative perspective, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of today’s art market, emphasizing the legal and financial structures prevalent in Italy and the United States. The aim is to deepen the knowledge of the general framework within which the study will explore certain aspects by analyzing the evolution of the art market, identifying the main players, and comparing the trends and performances of the Italian and U.S. art markets. After providing a general picture, this paper deepens the research exploring the circulation of art objects in and out of the territories of the two nations taken in exam, the different tax regulations and regimes applied to the figures operating in the art market, and the profound difference between the public management of cultural patronage and the private support of culture
“The entire art movement has become an enormous business venture” Financing the American Art Museum
This thesis examines the intricate relationship between financial operations and the public function of American art museums. The distinctive American nonprofit model relies heavily on private funds for its survival and success. The thesis traces the historical development of this model, and then analyzes the contemporary state of American art museums, with a specific focus on two prominent institutions: MoMA PS1 and the Yale University Art Gallery. The analysis highlights the significant influence of board members\u27 financial contributions and their business expertise on museum operations. Moreover, the thesis argues that the museum world has undergone rapid financialization in the twenty-first century. Ultimately, the thesis concludes that the American art museum landscape is undergoing a profound transformation driven by financial and operational considerations and argues that museums must navigate the complex terrain of financialization while remaining true to their mission of preserving and presenting art for the public
Art is an Upcoming Financial Vehicle, Why is The Legislation Not Catching Up?
The art market has historically been riddled with scandal and fraudulent activities. As art has increasingly become an investment vehicle the issue has worsened as there are more routes to commit fraud. This thesis examines the parallels between the art and financial markets to understand why the art market remains largely unregulated and how this impacts stakeholders. Through case studies, the research explores unethical practices within the art market and their broader consequences. It also investigates historical developments in both markets and evaluates potential regulatory measures to enhance transparency and accountability. Focusing on the United States, this study reviews existing literature and fraud cases to propose practical recommendations for reforming the art market. By addressing issues such as transparency, advisory roles versus dealer responsibilities, and regulatory limitations, this research seeks to provide actionable insights for creating a robust framework that benefits all market participants while preserving the integrity of the art world

Tradition Reimagined
Tradition Reimagined explores the dynamic intersection of traditional Mexican craftsmanship and contemporary art, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Mexico while embracing innovative artistic practices. This exhibition brings together an extraordinary collaboration between Mexican artisans, whose ancestral techniques have been passed down through generations, and contemporary artists who reinterpret these traditions through a modern lens. Hosted at Galería Kurimanzutto’s Chelsea space in New York, the exhibition highlights the importance of preserving artisanal practices in an era where immediacy and mass production threaten their sustainability. Artisans from regions such as Oaxaca, Jalisco, Chiapas, and Puebla bring their expertise in weaving, ceramics, wood carving, onyx craftsmanship and textiles, infusing each piece with deep cultural significance and sustainable practices. Alongside them, contemporary artists—including Bárbara SánchezKane, Mario Garcìa Torres, Ana Segovia, José Dávila, Pia Camil, and Gabriel de la Mora—draw inspiration from these traditional methods, creating works that reflect the enduring relevance of Mexican cultural identity in the global art world. The dialogue between tradition and innovation is central to this exhibition. Through carefully curated pairings of contemporary artworks and artisanal pieces, Tradition Reimagined emphasizes the mutual influence and respect shared between these two creative worlds. Sánchez-Kane’s textile-based works, crafted in collaboration with artisans from Chiapas, and Segovia’s vibrant paintings enhanced by artisans’ contributions from Guadalajara, exemplify how traditional techniques can inspire new narratives. Similarly, Dávila’s use of construction refuse and local materials, paired with Oaxacan artisans’ hand-carving techniques, underscores the role of sustainability and resourcefulness in both art and craft. Beyond aesthetic appreciation, Tradition Reimagined invites viewers to consider the social and economic importance of supporting artisans in Mexico. For many communities, artisanship is not only a form of cultural preservation but also a vital source of income. By fostering collaborations between contemporary artists and artisans, this exhibition advocates for the continuation of these practices, ensuring they are passed down to future generations. In choosing Kurimanzutto as the venue, Tradition Reimagined acknowledges the gallery’s pivotal role in promoting Mexican contemporary art on an international stage. Its Chelsea space offers an ideal setting to celebrate the dialogue between past and present, tradition and modernity, and Mexico’s vibrant artistic legacy. Through this exhibition, Tradition Reimagined seeks to challenge perceptions of what defines art and craft, creating a space where both are equally revered. It is a tribute to the skill, creativity, and resilience of Mexican artisans and artists, and an invitation to reimagine tradition as a living, evolving expression of cultural identity

Light, Space, Object, Paint: James Turrell, Mary Corse, and Helen Pashgian
Light, Space, Object, Paint reexamines the Light and Space movement, focusing on the often-overlooked contributions of women artists, particularly Mary Corse and Helen Pashgian, alongside James Turrell. This exhibition will highlight influential Light and Space artists, while exploring the movement\u27s core ideas and impact on contemporary art. This exhibition will be in collaboration with the most prominent museum in Los Angeles, which is the birthplace of the Light and Space movement. By placing female artists at the forefront, this exhibition challenges the gendered limitations within the art world of the 1960s and 70s, where women often faced smaller budgets and restricted access to larger spaces and resources. The exhibition will take place in an existing building, an airplane hangar, reflecting the significant inspiration many artists drew from the aeronautics industry. The scale of the venue allows for the display of larger projects, especially the newly commissioned works. For example, the pieces by women artists will be the largest they have ever created, requiring a large venue for their immersive installations. Mary Corse creates captivating paintings, Helen Pashgian offers sculptural objects, and James Turrell presents immersive installations. The show creates a rare opportunity for these artists to show their works together and offers an exploration of their unique approaches to light, space, and perception. The dynamic between these three artists is also essential to the exhibition. Turrell and Pashgian represent a yin and yang relationship, with Turrell’s shaping of ephemeral light into something physically palpable contrasting Pashgian dissolving physical material into light. Mary Corse is positioned in between the two artists, bridging their approaches by highlighting the 6 interplay of light and shadow in her work. This juxtaposition encourages viewers to explore the balance between their distinct artistic expressions. The exhibition aims to not only celebrate the legacy of these artists but also address the historical marginalization of female artists within the Light and Space movement. Although the movement is often associated with male figures, Mary Corse and Helen Pashgian’s contributions are equally as important. In fact, this exhibition is particularly significant because it marks the first time that a Light and Space show has dedicated more than half of its space to the work of female artists. It will highlight the incredible impact of these women, showcasing their work alongside that of James Turrell. This exhibition comes at an important moment, with these pioneering women still active, allowing a more inclusive historical narrative to unfold. Alongside key works from LACMA’s permanent collection and private collections across the United States, this exhibition will feature newly commissioned large-scale installations by Helen Pashgian and Mary Corse, allowing these artists to create monumental pieces. This show redefines the narrative of the Light and Space movement, challenging its traditional associations with male artists while celebrating its historical significance and contemporary relevance. Ultimately, the exhibition encourages the viewer to reflect on the nature of their own perception which shapes our understanding of the world and fosters a deep appreciation for the unique approaches of these three vital artists
CATALYSTA PROYECTO: A hybrid approach to showcasing Latin American Art in the Dominican Republic
Catalysta is a contemporary online art gallery that exclusively features Latin American artists, creating a dedicated platform for these voices to be seen and celebrated on the global stage. Our mission is to simplify the often-overwhelming experience of entering the art world, especially for young collectors who are new to the process. Our product offers a streamlined and accessible way to discover and purchase high-quality artwork without the traditional barriers. By providing information on the artist’s background, a description of the artwork and full disclosure of the price we offer a simple way of accessing and acquiring an art piece. We have always believed that the traditional art gallery model, with its often exclusive and frequently intimidating atmosphere, doesn’t cater to the modern, diverse, and younger audience that Catalysta serves. However, through our experience, we’ve also learned that an exclusively digital approach requires the occasional physical touchpoint to effectively engage collectors and art lovers. These physical exhibitions complement our online gallery and reinforce the personal connections between collectors, artists, and the art itself. Catalysta’s experience in its infancy has reinforced the fact that the future of art is in blending the convenience of digital access with the intimacy of occasional, well-curated physical exhibitions. With this knowledge, we continue to refine our approach, evolving Catalysta into a platform that offers the best of both worlds – an 11 innovative online gallery supported by meaningful, immersive physical interactions. Catalysta’s next initiative is to test a small physical gallery in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where the gallery can showcase the artworks of the talented artists that Catalysta represents. This physical space endeavors to be more than a traditional gallery space – it will be a dynamic, nontraditional program that reflects the evolving way people engage with art. In addition to the exhibitions, the space will serve as a testing ground for innovative programming that, if successful, can be replicated into other cities. It allows Catalysta to further explore how a hybrid model – combining digital platforms with in-person, immersive experiences – can drive engagement and sale
