Does virtual reality increase the success of interventions? Comparing non-VR and VR Virtual-PRO programmes’ efficacy for the prevention of sexual harassment among adolescents

    No full text
Virtual-PRO is a bystander-based programme with a Virtual Reality (VR) component. The current study focuses on testing the effectiveness of the same programme without VR, where multimedia content is played as 2D video, to clarify the advantages of VR over traditional sources for the prevention of sexual harassment. A cluster RCT was carried out with three experimental conditions (control group, experimental VR, and experimental non-VR) and three different time points (pre-test, post-test, and follow-up), separated by three-month intervals. In the study, 847 students aged 12–17 years (M = 14.73; SD = 0.88) were randomly grouped into the experimental VR group (n = 286), experimental non-VR group (n = 268), and control group (n = 293). Linear mixed model analyses were performed using SPSS 29. At follow-up, the experimental non-VR group was found to score lower for verbal/visual victimisation, online victimisation, and moral disengagement than the control group. Moreover, hostile sexism scores remained stable in the non-VR experimental group and increased in the control group. No significant differences were found when comparing the experimental condition with and without VR for online and verbal/visual sexual victimisation, moral disengagement or sexist attitudes. The only difference found between the two experimental conditions was in intention to intervene as a bystander, for which scores increased in the experimental group with VR. The results of this study clarify the advantages of using VR as a tool to elicit attitudinal change in sexual harassment bystanders and to aid decision-making regarding the cost-benefit of universal interventions

Zeyer in translation : on the translatability of Julius Zeyer's authorial style into other national languages

    No full text
This study examines the translations of Julius Zeyer's works into various national languages. The first part provides an overview of the translators of his works, a list of completed translations, and a comparative analysis of these translations in terms of their frequency in different national literatures, literary type, genre, and mutual relationships. The second part of the study compares the linguistic characteristics of selected Zeyer's works with their translations. The third part explores machine translations into other national languages, assessing their effectiveness. A stylometric comparison of selected linguistic features of the original text with artistic translations investigates the specific challenges of rendering Zeyer's authorial style into foreign languages, while a comparison with machine translations highlights the linguistic constraints and stylistic limitations inherent in each target language

The Czech music in the Protectorate and its central figure Vítězslav Novák

The real and not only Nazi propaganda proclaimed huge increase in concert and theatre life was used by the representatives of the Protectorate government as an argument for cultural and national autonomy. During the years of occupation, major musical events were held, such as the Prague Music May (1939), the Czech Music May (1940), the Jubilee Year of Antonín Dvořák (1941) and the Jubilee Year of Bedřich Smetana (1944). These large, organised events, primarily focused on the presentation of Czech music, also included the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Vítězslav Novák's birth in 1940. It was the work of this composer that had seen a surprising renaissance of interest during the difficult years of occupation compared to previous decades, as shown by the increased frequency of performances on concert stages, radio broadcasts and theatre stages. This paper explores the musical life of the Protectorate and highlights the central role played by the personality and work of Vítězslav Novák

How to approprietly define a musical score? : an outline of the actual taxonomy of musical scores with regard to the development of unconventional notation

    No full text
Graphic scores abandon traditional musical notation for visual symbols, inviting open-ended interpretation and improvisation. This article explores the limitations of existing taxonomies of graphic scores, which often neglect the interpretative process and the roles of the composer, performer, and audience. It proposes a different taxonomy considering the score's function, authorial intent, and the type of symbols used, offering a more holistic approach. Through case studies of performances, the article highlights how graphic scores bridge music and visual art, fostering creativity and collaboration between composers, interpreters, and audiences in some cases, with an emphasis on the role of free improvisation as a crucial element in interpreting these open works. Free improvisation allows performers to fully engage with the graphic score, transforming interpretation into a collaborative and spontaneous act of creation
