Artificial presence, real-life influence? Effects of CGI influencers on young adults’ health behavior intentions

    No full text
Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) influencers—also known as virtual influencers—are an increasingly influential phenomenon on social media. Some CGI influencers are presented as cartoon characters and are thus clearly recognizable as non-human. Other CGI influencers, however, are almost indistinguishable from real humans. Although CGIs can elicit parasocial interaction (PSI), we lack research distinguishing cartoon-look CGI influencers from human-look CGI influencers. Also, we do not know whether CGIs can lead to persuasive effects. This is particularly relevant regarding health topics because CGIs cannot have health issues. In an experimental study with a quota-based sample of N = 443 young adults (62.8% female) aged 16 to 26 from the United Kingdom, we compared the effects of a real human influencer, a human-look CGI influencer, and a cartoon-look CGI influencer advising about insomnia (i.e., sleeping problems) on young adults’ PSI and health behavior intentions. We found that PSI was strongest for the real human and weakest for the cartoon-look CGI influencer and was significantly positively related to young adults’ health behavior intentions. Personal affectedness by insomnia and gender did not moderate these relationships. Overall, findings suggest that the persuasive power of CGIs is limited, at least regarding topics such as health. Implications are discussed

Evaluation of Motivation, Attitudes, Intentions, and Quality of Services Provided to Organized Fans of Elite Team Sports Teams

This study reports on the evaluation results related to the motivation, attitudes, intentions, and quality of services offered to organized fans of elite sports teams. 375 spectators–fans from elite participant teams of team sports completed a package of four questionnaires, which determined their motivations, attitudes, intentions, the quality of provided services, during the championship of the period 2021-2022 and a demographic data sheet, throughout the first round of a championship period. The research findings support that fan attitudes are pivotal in shaping fan behavior. Whether these attitudes are positive, negative, or ambivalent, they have a direct impact on actions such as game attendance, merchandise purchase, and word-of-mouth communication. Intentions, as identified in the research, are a precursor to fan loyalty. By evaluating the quality of services, including in-stadium experiences, customer service, and engagement initiatives, the research underscores that sports organizations hold significant power to enhance fan satisfaction

Professional and Technical Language: Linguistic Challenges in the Context of Traditional Culture

    No full text
Globalisation and the intensification of multicultural contacts offer the opportunity to develop communication skills in foreign languages and to create space for acceptance and tolerance of others. On the other hand, there is a desire to preserve one's own identity, cultural characteristics and history and to present them in their authentic form to potential foreign visitors. Slovakia has a lot to offer in the tourism sector, but in addition to a wide range of services, it is also necessary to have enough professionals in tourism and cultural institutions who are willing and able to communicate in a foreign language. Although English can be seen as a lingua franca, not all foreign visitors are able or willing to communicate in English. It is therefore necessary to strengthen the communication skills of tourism graduates in languages other than English. In our article we focus on teaching the specialist vocabulary in the field of traditional culture in German. There are many specialised materials and textbooks on tourism, but there is a lack of texts and definitions of specialised vocabulary on the content of traditional culture, which is an integral part of our studies. In our article we describe the specific characteristics of technical and professional language. We then present the content of the foreign language in the field of traditional culture and describe the process of compiling and creating a multilingual dictionary of traditional culture, as well as the possibilities for its further use and for working with it in the classroom

Image of the city in novels by B. Prus, W.S. Reymont and K.M. Čapek-Chod

This study compares the images of the city in one Czech and two Polish novels written at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Lalka (1890) by B. Prus is set in Warsaw and explores the decadence of the Polish aristocracy. Ziemia obiecana (1899) by W. S. Reymont takes place in Łódź and depicts the industrial growth of the city. Antonín Vondrejc (1917) by K. M. Čapek-Chod is a psychological narrative about the individual degradation of a poet in Prague. These writers, in addition to realistic descriptions, employ specific artistic devices, such as the personification of the city or the depiction of the city as a symbolic labyrinth. The open spaces of the cities — especially streets, squares, theaters, salons, and pubs — serve as key settings for expressing relationships and conflicts among the protagonists in these novels

Enacting Kane's disgust : a cognitive and emotion science approach to Blasted

    No full text
Utilising emotion science on disgust and the interconnection between emotion and cognition this essay analyses Kane's Blasted to articulate not only how the play makes us feel through an application of the evolutionary basis for disgust, but how this experience is meant to communicate the morality of the play's world through the cognitive structures of embodied schemata. The operation of experiential theatre is expanded through an understanding of enactivism, an integral part of 4E cognition, as it applies to the emotion of disgust. Identifying and analysing the embodied schemata of boundaries, contamination, animality, and balance the essay develops how Blasted relies on the most evolutionarily advanced form of disgust, 'moralisation', to understand how the embodied experience of theatre creates meaning. Kane's shocking and disgusting theatre is thus understood to go beyond feeling. It can help us understand how viscerally reactive moments in the theatre impinge on how an audience/reader learn and adopt moral views
