"Tu l'aimes…

    No full text
This paper offers an analysis of "O Vinho", a short story from Miguel Torga's Contos da Montanha, through the lens of Freudian psychoanalysis and Bachelardian imagery. Focusing on the inner monologue of a drunken man torn between elation and despair, the study highlights the wine's ambivalent role as both a source of sensorial euphoria and a trigger for existential confrontation. The narrative unfolds in three phases – unconscious, preconscious, conscious – marked by contrasting images in both landscape and psyche. The article thus reveals a tragic and intense short story in which human subjectivity oscillates between impulses and repression, light and darkness, within a dialectic of euphoria and dysphoria.

Salzburger Festspiele as a communication channel of Austrian international cultural politics and Austro-Czechoslovak relations in 1934-1937

    No full text
The internationally renowned Salzburger Festspiele functioned between 1934 and 1937 as a form of "cultural export commodity [...] for the betterment of the German state" (Tamara Ehs), aligning with the foreign policy aims of the Austrofascist regime led by Federal Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg. Among the festival's prominent conductors was Bruno Walter (1876–1962), who, having been forced to leave Germany due to his Jewish origins, conducted the Vienna Philharmonic and collaborated with the Vienna State Opera from 1933 onwards. In 1935, the young Slovak musicologist Ivan Ballo (1909–1977) met Walter in person at the Salzburg festival and went on to publish numerous reports and critiques in the Czechoslovak press. Ballo returned to Salzburg in 1936 and 1937, where he not only sought to facilitate Walter's guest performance in Bratislava but also actively lobbied for Czechoslovak musical artists to be included in the festival's programme. This study probes into a brief yet pivotal episode of interwar cultural propaganda, zooming in on the political actors and strategies that directly influenced the operations of the festival, also considering the previous political developments that significantly impacted the interwar relations between Czechoslovakia and Austria. Based on new archival findings, it also provides scope for discussing Ivan Ballo's role as a protagonist of "cultural diplomacy" advocating for closer ties between the two states in the period

Studie dokumentuje právní a správní projevy socioekonomického dělení půdy v období pozdního středověku a sleduje jejich dlouhodobou kontinuitu v české krajině až do novověku. Hranice představuje pozoruhodný případ institucionální a územní kontinuity. This study documents legal and administrative manifestations of socio-economic land division during the late medieval period and traces their long-term continuity into the modern era in the Czech landscape. The boundary between the former estates of Jihlava and Třešť (Bohemian-Moravian Highlands) stretches over ten kilometres and is marked by trenches, stones, markers, and natural features. Preserved elements were identified and analyzed with the use of non-destructive methods (LiDAR, DTM, 3D photogrammetry, GNSS) combined with cartographic and archive sources. Data analysis was carried out in ArcGIS Pro. The research confirms that this boundary, with stones dating to 1557, ranks among the oldest documented demarcation lines in the Czech lands. It represents an exceptional example of institutional and territorial continuity. Unlike most estate boundaries, which were typically recorded from later periods, this nearly five centuries old system survived the abolition of feudal administration in 1848 and still shapes current cadastral structures

Získané nálezy určují dobu provozu hradu do období poslední třetiny 13. století až počátku 14. století.This article focuses on a group of fortified seats from the high Middle Ages that arose on the northern edge of early medieval continuous settlement and in areas of intensive settlement processes during the second half of the 13th century. Their existence is not recorded in contemporary written sources, and they are characterized by a short period of operation, which did not extend beyond the beginning of the 14th century. These seats were usually built by members of the local landed nobility, whose descendants, however, are not mentioned in period documents until the 14th century, by which time the oldest castles had already been abandoned and replaced with seats located directly in villages (manors). Important examples of this earliest layer of castles include the residence at Vražba near the village of Habřiny. Research there has confirmed the operation of a castle whose fortifications consisted only of earthworks – a moat, a rampart, and a wooden palisade enclosing the core. The residential building at the front of the castle core was constructed using only wood and earth structures. Based on finds, the castle can be dated to the period between the last third of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century

The Gothic fortifications of Bratislava Castle, constructed by decision of the Hungarian king (1387–1437) and Roman-German emperor (1433–1437) Sigismund of Luxembourg, included a pair of tower gates built on the south slope of the castle hill. While the east gate has been preserved to this day almost in its original form, the west gate disappeared relatively quickly. Its remains were first uncovered in 1958–1959 and investigated in 1989–1990 and 2021. Several preserved architectural elements suggest that it had a similar generous design with elements of "Parléř Gothic" architecture which can still be observed on the east gate today. In 2022, a partial reconstruction of its north part was carried out using the original architectural elements. This article summarizes, revises and supplements the current knowledge about this little-known architecture of Bratislava Castle and provides information on the methodology of presenting its remains.Súčasťou gotického opevnenia Bratislavského hradu vybudovaného z rozhodnutia uhorského kráľa (1387–1437) a rímsko-nemeckého cisára (1433–1437) Žigmunda Luxemburského bola dvojica vežových brán postavených na južnom svahu hradného kopca. Zatiaľ čo východná brána sa zachovala takmer v pôvodnej podobe dodnes, západná brána pomerne rýchlo zanikla. Jej zvyšky boli prvýkrát odkryté v rokoch 1958 až 1959 a doskúmavané v rokoch 1989 až 1990 a 2021. Príspevok sumarizuje, koriguje a dopĺňa doterajšie poznatky o tejto málo známej architektúre Bratislavského hradu a poskytuje informáciu o metodike prezentácie jej zvyškov

Sila rieky - zdroj príjmov i neustále nebezpečenstvo : príspevok k archeologickým dokladom úprav dunajského brehu v prešporskom (bratislavskom) prístave

Since the 1960s, archaeological research into the Danube embankment in Bratislava’s Podhradie district has uncovered several sites that can be interpreted as modifications to the riverbank or part of a port. This chiefly concerns the area around the Water Tower national cultural monument, where research was carried out in 2022 with the aim of complementing information about its oldest construction phase. In the context of other findings, the presented study describes the development of the Danube riverbank and the local embankment development related to shipping in the Middle Ages and the early modern age. The form and character of the riverbank were affected not only by repeated flooding, transport frequency and the water level in the Danube, but also by the construction of a bridge near an older crossing over the river. The uncovered situations can be compared with documented inland ports and anchorages, for example in Regensburg, Frankfurt am Main, and Karlsburg. V kontexte s ostatnými nálezmi približuje predložená štúdia vývoj úprav dunajského brehu a tunajšej zástavby nábrežia súvisiacej s lodnou dopravou v období stredoveku a na začiatku novoveku. Odkryté situácie je možné porovnávať so zdokumentovanými vnútrozemskými prístavmi či kotviskami, napríklad v Regensburgu, Frankfurte nad Mohanom či Karlburgu

Craving for the West: in-yer-face theatre in the land of the Vistula

    No full text
In the article, the authors use Rebecca Schneider's archival methodology and analyse two performances – Krzysztof Warlikowski's Cleansed and Grzegorz Jarzyna's 4.48 Psychosis. Based on theatre reviews and popular magazines, they place these productions in the context of Poland's post-transition aspiration to belong to the Western world. Sociologist Jadwiga Staniszkis described these tendencies as a tension between globalisation and adherence to tradition. Articles in women's magazines show a fascination with the figures of both directors, who have enjoyed international success, while critics' opinions are divided between those praising the adaptations of Kane's works for renewing the Polish theatre language and those criticising them for their controversial use of nudity. The anti-capitalist and anti-identity message of the writer's work has thus become an expression of Polish liberalcapitalist aspirations based on the struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights and on how to achieve commercial success in the West

Librettos from before 1800s in the library of Český Krumlov Castle

This study examines a collection of librettos dating from before 1800s and held in the library of Český Krumlov Castle, Czechia. Within this collection, which comprises approximately 300 librettos, three relatively coherent provenance-based groups can be distinguished: 17th-century Italian librettos, primarily from Venetian productions between 1671 and 1698; librettos of operas and oratorios associated with the court of Emperor Leopold I; and Viennese librettos from the second half of the 18th century. In addition to a brief characterisation of each group, the study includes several case studies tracing possible routes by which specific titles may have entered the library, with particular attention to the personal interests of the estate's owners. The analysis also considers the relationship between the librettos and musical materials from Český Krumlov, whether extant (especially the collection of Eggenberg scores from the late 17th century) or recorded in historical inventories. The study contributes to the broader understanding of the dissemination of musical theatre in the 17th and 18th centuries

Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and its Czech prints from the 16th century

    No full text
The study deals with several early printed books in Czech dating back to the 16th century. It briefly refers to the frequently published work Kniha bohomyslna ... (The pious book on mourning wailing of the Holy Fathers in the darkness, first printed in 1572) and draws attention to Josef Jungmann’s assumption, uncritically repeated by latest scholarly literature, that the translator of the work was Jan Straněnsky. Josef Truhlař already pointed out in 1906 that this printed book is a revival of a work which we know from a manuscript dated 1551. The study further examines in detail the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and its Czech printed editions from the second half of the 16th century. The editions transmit the same text, which is based on the textual tradition represented by two manuscripts from the second half of the 15th century. This manuscript tradition had already brought together four originally separate works: the chapters of Genesis, the Testaments (Old Czech translation of the Latin work Testamenta duodecim patriarcharum), Joseph and Aseneth (Old Czech translation of the Latin Historia Ioseph et Aseneth), and the Life of Joseph (Old Czech translation of the Historia Ioseph). Finally, the study describes the composition of the Czech printed Testaments and points out some textual differences between the printed editions and the manuscripts
