Breaking the conspiracy of silence: Representations of social actors in the online narratives of Nigerian rape victims

This paper explores discursive strategies Nigerian victims of rape deploy in narrating their traumatic experiences. Data for the study comprise purposively selected online narratives of two major Nigerian rape victims circulated on Pulse.ng and Nairaland in 2018 and 2019 respectively. The data are analysed qualitatively using van Leeuwen’s social actors’ model, a framework that describes how participants of social practices are represented in discourse. The analysis reveals that the rape survivors deployed different mechanisms of representation of social actors, such as nomination, categorisation, beneficialisation, and honorification in their narratives to assert themselves, construct power, expose perpetrators and contest specific institutionalised forces that suppress them. These are done to challenge repressive traditions thus, breaking the culture of silence and revealing the dynamic nature rape discourse is assuming in Nigeria. The paper concludes that the discursive strategies highlighted in the selected narratives evince self-representations of rape victimhood

What can Czech and Slovak Social Democratic Parties expect from Progressive rebranding? : A demand-side perspective through the clustering of WVS/EVS respondents

    No full text
In recent years, the left side of the political spectrum in the Czech and Slovak party systems has undergone significant changes. In Czechia, the main anti-establishment party, ANO, has shifted its economic program to incorporate more interventionist policies. In Slovakia, the main social-democratic party, SMER, has progressively adopted more conservative social stances. These trends have coincided with a decline in voter support for the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD) and SMER in Slovakia, seemingly supporting the de-alignment theory generally used to explain the decline of centre-left parties in Western Europe. Building on these premises, this article explores the first two layers of Maier’s conceptualization of a political cleavage (social groups and their defining values) to assess the potential gains or losses that Social Democratic parties in the two countries might experience if they rebrand towards “New Left” stances. By clustering value survey respondents along left-wing and progressive social values, and by analysing these clusters’ members through logistic regression, the findings suggest that while shifting to the Left may attract new socio-demographic groups, adopting progressive values might be, for the two parties, electorally harmful in the short term

The Transformation of the Sokol Sports Complex in Brno

This article examines the historical evolution and transformation of the Sokol's multi-functional sports complex at the Brno Reservoir. Originally conceived in the 1930s by the Sokol Brno I unit, the complex was envisioned as a comprehensive sports and recreational facility that would advance the physical education ideals of the Sokol movement. Over time, the complex experienced significant changes driven by political, social, and economic forces, including periods of neglect and revival. Today, it remains operational, offering a diverse range of sports and recreational activities, however very different from the original intentions, while preserving its legacy as a cultural and social landmark in the Brno region. The aim of this study is to analyze the historical development of the complex, assess key political, social, and economic influences on its transformation, and evaluate its contemporary role in Czech physical education and sports traditions. The study draws on a thorough historical analysis of primary sources, including archival documents, meeting records, and contemporary periodicals, supplemented by secondary literature on Sokol's history. Methodologically, the study employs chronological reconstruction, qualitative analysis of socio-political influences on the development of the complex, and comparative analysis to identify patterns and discrepancies in the historical record. The findings reveal that the complex functioned not only as a recreational hub but also as a symbol of resilience and community spirit, especially during periods of adversity under Nazi occupation and the Communist regime. The article concludes by examining the post-1989 restoration of the complex, emphasizing its ongoing role in preserving Czech cultural and physical education traditions

Функция эротических мотивов в повести А. Адамовича "Последняя пастораль"

    No full text
Adamovich's The Last Pastoral belongs to his late works, characterised by a parable form of narration, a universal type of characters, and an abstract chronotope, revealing deep moral and philosophical questions. In this kind of fiction allegory is widely used, and realistic episodes often have a symbolic meaning. The article analyses the role of erotic motifs in the novel. The author seeks to prove that the erotic in Last Pastoral is connected with violence and is opposed to the Christian salvific ideal of love. The researcher also considers the erotic in the novel in the political and gender context."

Some thoughts on the military capabilities of Alexios I Komnenos : Alexios I Komnenos as a military commander

    No full text
Alexios I Komnenos (1081–1118) ranks among the most pivotal emperors in Byzantine history; nevertheless, various facets of his reign remain insufficiently examined. This study aims to investigate one such aspect — his effectiveness as a military commander — given that much of his success in reestablishing the fortunes of the Byzantine Empire can be attributed to his extensive military experience. To this particular end, the paper will provide a concise overview of the principal military engagements in which Alexios personally participated over the course of his life and career. Increased emphasis will be placed on critical Byzantine defeats under command of this emperor, notably the battles of Dyrrachion (1081) and Dristra (1087), in order to assess the extent of Alexios I Komnenos' responsibility. Through a detailed analysis of these engagements, the study seeks to determine whether these setbacks were primarily the result of his own strategic misjudgments or whether broader contextual factors played a more decisive role

Aspects of the ambiguous image of Latin Christendom in Rus' (from the mid-eleventh to the mid-twelfth century)

    No full text
This paper analyzes some aspects of reception of Latin Christendom in Kyivan Rus' according to the East Slavic narrative sources written from the mid-eleventh to the mid-twelfth century, i.e., at the time of rising doctrinal and cultural differences between Constantinople and Rome (including the "Great Schism"). Special consideration is given to the travel diary on the Holy Land titled Life and Pilgrimage of Daniel, Hegumen of the Land of Rus’ serving as an example of encountering confessional differences. Daniel’s thematization of his confessional "other" in the Holy Land is complemented by examples of a similar ambiguity in the case of Rus’ as a whole. On a declarative level, the polemical writings of the Kyivan metropolitan bishops testify about a refutation of the "Latin heresies". On the other hand, decisions of the East Slavic princes confirm the willingness to cooperate with the neighboring Latin polities (Sweden, Poland, Hungary, etc.) in forming dynastic marriages and military alliances
