Challenges of Human Resource Management in Hospitals and their probable solutions: A study based on review of literature
Human resource management (HRM) is concerned with the development of both individuals and the organization in which they operate. HRM is engaged not only in securing and developing the talents of individual workers, but also in implementing programs that enhance communication and cooperation between those individual workers in order to nurture organizational development. In a sector like Healthcare, the human resource is relatively diverse and requires a high level of skill and competency. The quality of the human resource has a great impact on the efficiency and performance of the health care delivery system. Also with the diverse group of workforce, the individual goals and motivation level of the workforce also varies. Thus it becomes quite challenging for the human resource personnel to effectively handle this diverse workforce. This paper attempts to identify the challenges faced by the human resource units of the healthcare organisations and hospitals and puts an effort to suggest some probable solutions to address the challenges. The paper identifies 10 challenges faced by the human resource management of the healthcare organisations more specifically the hospitals in managing the workforc
Is it in the Family? A Reflection from the Field on Hereditary Factors influencing Suicide
Heredity as a factor influencing suicide is in the realm of the probable. The present paper is an attempt to probe the probability of considering heredity as a factor influencing suicide. Effort is made to juxtapose the two divergent views on heredity – one acknowledging the possibility and the other rejecting the possibility- as a cause for suicide. Authors who lay greater emphasis on the individual and who consider suicide as an individual act tend to hold the view that suicide can be hereditary. Durkheim who establishes suicide as a social fact negates the role of race and heredity in the suicidal act. The paper looks at these two views based on a review of literature. Without being naïve and dodgy on this issue the paper further attempts with two narratives from the field to nudge the point that in the search for the causes of suicide nothing should be left unconsidered. All causes (even if they are not proved beyond doubt), even the apparently paltry; need to be considered to arrive at a more encompassing understanding of the tantalizing phenomenon of suicide
The Implications of Gender Power Relations on Small Ruminant Producer Rural Female Farmers in Nasarawa State, Nigeria
The involvement of rural females in small ruminant production in Nigeria is much higher than in crop production. However, they lack the opportunities and the resources required to make profitable investment in the sector - hence, the livestock sector is generally underperforming in the region. The study investigates the involvement of male and female farmers in small ruminant production and factors affecting the involvement of female farmers. The study adopted mixed methodologies in its inquiry and the relevant gender analysis frameworks. Findings reveal differences in male and females’ involvement in small ruminant production with females handling more of the roles of care. There were existing inequalities between the genders in their access and control over resources and services used for productive purposes, with significant association between females’ access and control over resources and services such as land, equipment and labour, and extension services and credit. Their socio-economic characteristics such flock size, education, marital status and age had significant influence on their control over resources and services. It is concluded that the roles of “care” undertaken by females should not be undermined as it is very significant to improve farm income without which the livestock sector does not profit. Hence, the design of supporting policies could take into account these important factors, while providing specialised training in caring for livestock and the use of technical inputs in scientific feeding, and improved health care and maintenance of hygiene which can significantly increase farm output for livestock growth and development in the state
Editorial
The Journal of Development Practice is happy to bring out its 2018 (Annual) Volume 4. This volume like in other volumes covers themes of various interests. There are five different themes in this volume. The first article by Dominic Pendenam deals with suicide and puts forth a critical reflection based on theories and field experience. The author asks a question whether a suicide runs through a family? The second article by Romina Istratti concerns with the effectiveness of gender and development practice in diverse knowledge systems and draws conclusion that gender-sensitive development … needs to consider local epistemological framework attuned to religio-cultural sensibilities. The author further suggests participatory ethnographic methodology for effectiveness in such study. The third article by Hae-du Hwang and Gwang-Min KIM proposes adoption of cooperative microfinance than commercial oriented microfinance for alleviation of mass poverty in the world. The authors cite a large number of examples from across the world and put forth their argument and arrive at such a conclusion. The fourth article by Kaberi Das brings out the nature of relationship between migrants and city in the context of vertical and horizontal expansion of urban spaces. The paper is divided into four parts. The first part looks into the relationship between cities and migrants from the inclusive and exclusive perspectives; the second at the relationship between migrants and urbanization; the third into the insider-outsider paradigm that is constructed to distinguish between the local and the migrants and how the migrants negotiate their identity (with case from Guwahati city in Assam); and the fourth analyzes policies that are framed in the context of India for migrants and the way migrants are reflected in the policies. The fifth article by Asenath K. Silong speaks about the involvement of the rural female small ruminant farmers in Nigeria. The author argues that the the roles of “care” undertaken by females should not be undermined as it is very significant to improve farm income without which the livestock sector does not profit. The sixth article by Jacob Islary is a reflection on the factors and process that makes a movement at community levels take up militant and extremist approach in making their voices and demands heard. The study arises out of an ethnographic experience of the author. The Journal of Development Practice reiterates its stand to give space for alternative views especially arising from experiences from the field. I along with the editorial team wish you and engaging reading.Editor, JD
An Innovative Strategy of Energy Generation using Piezoelectric Materials: A Review
Certain material when strained produce electric potential over their surface which is directly proportional to the amount of mechanical stress applied. These materials are known as piezoelectric materials and this effect is referred as a direct piezoelectric effect. Piezoelectricity is intensely used in the working of transducers, actuators, surface acoustic wave devices, frequency controls, etc. Use of piezoelectric material for power generation is now becoming a new promising area of its usage. Many countries like Japan, Israel India have already moved ahead in this direction with its wide range of experimentation and testing on using the material as a source for power generation. Also, with the advancement in the manufacturing and production capabilities of these materials the aspects like performance, affordability, reliability, easy implantation and longevity have greatly enhanced. This paper focuses on using the piezoelectric material as a power generating source and extension of its use in various areas
Problems of Women Entrepreneurs - A Case Study of Dharwad District
The development of entrepreneurship among women is a major step to increase women participation in economic development. In India, women constitute around half of the of total country population. Once upon a time, they were confined to the four walls of houses performing household activities. The scenario has changed. Now, women have been performing exceeding well in different spheres of activities. Even they indulge in running the enterprises and performing well in the society. Though women contribute almost 50 per cent in business development, socio-cultural values and attitudes are the main obstacles to their entrepreneurship. Hence, in this study, an attempt has been made to describe the problems of women entrepreneurs. Women entrepreneurs encounter so many problems like family ties, lack of family support, lack of awareness about opportunities, inadequate finance, lack of training, poor knowledge of the market, cut-throat competition, etc
Solar Charge Controllers using MPPT and PWM: A Review
With the increasing demand of power and energy, energy conservation and use of renewable resources have become a crucial necessity. Solar energy will become the ultimate and prime source of energy in near future. Therefore, highly efficient and low energy consuming solar-powered equipment and applications will soon be a major requirement. In this paper, solar charge controller using Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) have been analyzed and compared, which is needed in all solar powered systems that utilize batteries. Its role is to regulate the power going from the solar panel to the batteries. Most of the modern charge controllers include PWM and MPPT. These charge controllers are designed such that the solar battery gets recharged quickly and does not get over discharged, thereby ensuring the prolonged lifespan of the battery
Study of Power Flow Control Using FACTS Devices
With most of the countries on the threshold of industrialization the demand for electrical power also continues to increase steadily and is predominantly strong. Moreover, because the transmission systems are operated near to their thermal and stability limits, the chief challenge for the power industry is to supply electrical power to match the demands of the consumers with the minimum amount of losses while maintaining adequate power quality level. For various reasons, newly installed transmission lines are unable to cope up with the growing power generation. This paper presents the ideas of using FACTS devices for enhanced operation and more effective usage and control of the existing transmission network framework. The development of Flexible AC Transmission Systems, or FACTS based on high power electronics, offers a powerful means of meeting the challenges
