The Experiences of Southeastern Massachusetts K-12 Teachers and Factors that Influenced Retention During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic
Get PDFThis narrative study described factors that positively influenced teacher retention during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Herzberg’s 2-factor theory provides the framework for understanding how teachers’ work conditions and professional relationships motivated them to remain in their roles. This study was designed to capture the voice of educators and the best practices were used to motivate them throughout the pandemic and the return to the classroom. Ten K-12 public school teachers employed within five schools in southeastern Massachusetts participated in this qualitative study. The following findings from the study include: (a) Poor student engagement negatively affected teachers’ work satisfaction during and after the pandemic (b) While work satisfaction was low, motivation remained high (c) Relationships with colleagues motivated teachers to remain in their positions as they navigated through the transition. Recommendations for teacher retention include supporting teacher wellness and providing meaningful professional development for educators that allows for collaboration with their colleagues.

Early Support and Home-based Interventions for Children Affected by Bipolar Disorder in Parents
Get PDFThis capstone project explores the qualitative differences in the transmissibility of
parental mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder, and the effects the introduction of early support and interventions in their residencies may have. Bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression) is a mental health disorder characterized by unusual shifts in mood, activity, energy levels, and concentration that affect the individual’s ability to perform daily tasks (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023). Children of parents with bipolar disorder have a 2.7 times higher risk for developing any psychiatric disorder and a 4 times higher risk for developing a mood disorder in comparison to children of parents without any psychiatric illness (Miclowitz & Chang, 2008). An additional factor affecting children of parents with bipolar disorder is the reduced life expectancy of such individuals, which is10 to 12 years less compared to the general population, due to the prevalence of secondary illnesses and the elevated risk of death by suicide (Nierenberg et al., 2023).
This literature review explores parental mental illness, especially bipolar disorder, specifically its prevalence, manifestations, risk factors, and generally accepted and effective treatments. Additionally, it examines the risk factors that offspring of parents with bipolar disorder are exposed to and appraises protective factors that can contribute to the differentiation of transmissibility of the disorder. The capstone project identifies gaps in the existing practice of individualized interventions/home support and suggests various approaches that can potentially alter the trajectory of the illness development in the offspring, and therefore, improve the quality of family life for both parents with bipolar disorder and their children
Religion, Spirituality, and Sexual Minority Identity Development
Get PDFThe LGBTQIA+ relationship with religion is diverse and complex. Historically, many religions have marginalized LGBTQIA+ people. The historic marginalization of queer people has created a complex relationship with religion for many queer people, this can lead to difficulty integrating both religious and sexual affective identities into an integrated identity. It is important to note that not all religions have historically marginalized queer people and many queer individuals do not experience difficulty integrating their religious and sexual identities. Individuals who are able to integrate their varying religious and sexual affective identities experience better mental health outcomes than those who are unable to integrate their varying identities. This literature review will explore the contextual factors that influence LGBTQIA+ religious identity integration and counselor interventions to support healthy identity integration.
