Parlez-vous Francais? You Betcha: Revitalizing a French Cultural Center by Connecting to its Minnesota Roots

    Get PDF
The Alliance Française Minneapolis–St. Paul (AFMSP) is Minnesota’s only cultural center dedicated exclusively to the French language and francophone cultures. In recent years, participation in its programs and offerings has declined, threatening its financial sustainability. This project utilizes strategic communication research and theory to develop solutions that enhance AFMSP’s community engagement and relevance. A review of organizational performance data, industry reports, and local cultural trends revealed the need for more targeted and persuasive communication efforts. Using Framing Theory and Aristotle’s Theory of Persuasion, this project examines how messaging strategies can be designed to shape public perception and motivate action through ethos, pathos, and logos. Primary research consisted of interviews with AFMSP staff, other Alliance Française leaders, and executive directors from various cultural centers. Surveys were also conducted for both the AFMSP community and instructors. These insights informed the development of strategic objectives and a comprehensive communication campaign titled Bonjour, Minnesota.” The campaign positions AFMSP as an accessible and enriching resource, inviting Minnesotans to experience French language and culture without leaving the state. The strategies aim to increase participation in events and courses, strengthen community ties, and establish AFMSP as a vital hub for cultural connection

Speed-Coaching as a Pedagogical Practice: Decision-Making and Priorities Among Successful Speed Coaches

    Get PDF
This study employed a three-round Delphi study technique to identify key elements in speed development coaching by surveying 106 qualified coaches, including certified professionals, championship-winning coaches, facility operators, and NCAA strength-and-conditioning specialists. This study explored five critical domains: nonnegotiable elements of speed development, decision-making factors for teaching priorities, effective teaching methods, environmental influences, and coaching philosophies. The results revealed a significant emphasis on technique/mechanics and maximum velocity exposure as foundational speed development elements, with notable differences between elite-level and lower-level coaches. Elite coaches demonstrated more sophisticated measurement approaches through systematic data collection, advanced technical assessment tools, comprehensive performance metrics, and integrated feedback systems. The three-round consensus-building process identified patterns in coaching methodologies that contribute to speed development best practices, providing valuable insights for practitioners seeking to optimize athlete performance through evidence-based speed-training approaches

    Alissa Cherry: A Poetry Reading

    No full text
The Laureate Writers Series for Tuesday April 1st will feature Alissa Cherry at the Blue Heron Coffeehouse. The reading begins at 7 pm and will be followed by a book signing and an Open Mic. Novices as well as experienced writers are encouraged to participate in the Open Mic. The event is free and open to the public. Allisa Cherry is the author of An Exodus of Sparks “ and is the 2024 recipient of the Poetry Prize given by Michigan State University’s Center for Poetry. Her work has appeared in TriQuarterly, The Journal, The McNeese Review, The Penn Review, and other literary journals. Her work also has been a finalist for the Sewanee Review Award for Poetry and the First Book Award at Persea Books. She is an associate poetry editor for West Trade Review and writes poetry book reviews for that journal’s “West End Book Reviews” column. Cherry was raised in a religious community in the irradiated high desert of rural Arizona. She has deep ancestral ties to Mormon history—and, while not a direct descendant of Brigham Young, two of her aunts were plural married to him. She also is the great-granddaughter of a polygamist on her mother’s side, which makes her Mormon royalty-adjacent. Her complex relationship with the Mormon faith, the quotidian violence of her upbringing, and the geography of the Southwest informs much of her poetry. She has long since relocated to Portland, OR where she works in workforce development teaching classes and workshops designed for immigrants and refugees transitioning to a life in the United State The Laureates Series is sponsored by the Blue Heron Coffeehouse, Chapter Two Books of Winona, Friends of the Winona Public Library, and Richard and Sara Ricker. - description publicized by Visit Winona.
