    No full text
Working Together: Cooperation or Collaboration?

    No full text
Teamwork involves different types of interactions—specifically cooperation and collaboration—that are necessary in education and many other professions. The differences between cooperation and collaboration underline the teacher’s role in influencing group dynamics, which represent both a foundation for professional design education and a prequalification for students’ competences as teachers and for critical evaluation. As a test case, we focused on the Working Together action-research project in design education for specialised teacher training in design, arts, and crafts at the Oslo Metropolitan University, which included three student groups in the material areas of drawing, ceramics, and textiles. The project developed the participants’ patience, manual skills, creativity, and abilities, which are important personal qualities for design education and innovation and represent cornerstones in almost every design literacy and business environment. The hope is that students will transform these competences to teaching pupils of all ages in their future careers.Teamwork involves different types of interactions—specifically cooperation and collaboration—that are necessary in education and many other professions. Material-discursive changes: posthuman methodologies to (re)conceptualize postgraduate encounters in/with/through language

This paper aims to demonstrate how posthuman research methodologies foster change in analytical thinking strategies to encourage new understandings of academic literacy. It details data and insights from a recent PhD study exploring postgraduate students undergoing transformational entanglements of becomings with ‘academic language’. By presenting fragments of interviews with postgraduate students sites of contradictions and assumed expectations of communicative competence are explored. This is analysed by overlaying several thoughts on top of Deleuzo-Guattarian concepts major and minor language, desire, and the pre-personal. Posthuman methodologies are used to re-think ‘the problem’ of academic language, unsettling longstanding ‘deficit model’ understandings of academic literacy. Exploring possibilities of the ‘more than’ in and of language creates generative spaces for new possibilities in analytical processes. Thus, I unsettle my own thinking practices by re-turning to the data to offer multiple diffracted readings for alternative ideas about the role of language in postgraduate learners’ becomings

Comparing Early Childhood Teacher Education in the subject Language learning and Early literacy in Denmark and Norway

    No full text
Few studies highlight the content of early childhood teacher education (ECTE) and examine the quality of knowledge acquired by future early childhood teachers. The current study concerns two questions. The first explores the goals of the national curricula in Danish and Norwegian ECTE concerning children’s language learning and early literacy. The second explores how satisfied Danish and Norwegian student teachers are with their own subjective learning outcomes related to the same themes. To answer the first question, data were collected through document analysis of the two countries’ national curricula. To answer the second question, data were collected through a survey handed out to student teachers in both countries at the end of their education. The survey contained questions about factual, procedural, and meta-knowledge areas. The survey participants comprised 199 Norwegian student teachers from three University Colleges and 90 Danish student teachers from three separate campuses at one University College. This study reveals that the Norwegian student teachers evaluated their subjective learning outcomes in the fields of language learning and early literacy more highly than Danish student teachers. Our research points to the fact that, compared to the Norwegian ECTE, the breadth of subjects in the Danish ECTE bachelor program tends to give lower subjective learning outcomes in these knowledge areas

Clinical Teaching as a Challenge in Transforming the Nursing Profession in Estonia

    No full text
The changes in European healthcare education, building on the Bologna Process, aimed at the integration of clinical work and teaching and promoted a holistic patient and learner-centred professional paradigm. The article, based on the findings of two qualitative studies (2017–2019), focuses on the transformation of the nursing profession in the context of the Estonian healthcare curriculum reform. Thematic written interviews accompanied by a drawing task were collected from clinical nurse teachers and graduating students. The data was analysed using hermeneutic content and comparative analysis. The findings showed that the students had internalised the patient-centred paradigm and integrated teaching into their clinical work, but their learning was hampered by the institutional atmosphere dominated by clinical values. Among the nurses, only the “ideal clinical teachers” had combined clinical work and teaching in their professional paradigm. The tensions in the clinical internship limit the attainment of the reformed profession

Kritisk design literacy i grunnskolen: Fire narrativ i utvikling av designkompetanse for bærekraft

    No full text
Products of human creativity have altered nature to such an extent that a new geological epoch has been proposed, the Anthropocene. Design as a discipline bring forth a transformative agenda - always on the way to something new. Will the development of pupils’ design literacies at the level of primary and lower secondary education only increase the burden on nature? Here, it is crucial which roles the pupils are offered through education, as well as how design is understood and practiced. In this literature review, the transition to a more sustainable society is set as a premise when academic texts are examined. Four narratives are identified as vital to cultivate design literacy and provide a basis to define what it means to be a design literate general public in a context of critical innovation.

    No full text
This article has art copyright as its theme. With this in mind, I examine the boundaries of copyright depending on who makes a new artistic creation based on a previous work. Various examples where existing works are copied form the basis for my analysis and discussion of different approaches to the use of our tangible cultural heritage. Three perspectives on originality are elaborated on in the question of what a famous artist can do that an amateur may not. One perspective sees originality as something inherent in the artist, another that all works are adaptations of what already exists, a third that the recipient is involved in the creation of the work. In this article, the didactic perspective plays a major role. It reveals opportunities for teaching where understanding the boundaries of art copyright can open doors to a world of new aesthetic experiences.

Effectiveness of I’m Learning for achieving quality learning environments: Impact and implications from three country pilots

    No full text
From 2013 to 2017, Save the Children Norway tested the hypothesis that a global framework could be used to empower locally driven solutions within the education sector. It did so by galvanizing support and aligning stakeholders to common goals articulated through the Quality Learning Environment Framework but allowing each community context to determine its own path for achieving those goals. This article explores the effectiveness and impact of these projects across the three pilot countries of Cambodia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe as defined by the original project goals, outcomes, and objectives. Reflecting on both qualitative and quantitative data gathered throughout the life of the project, the article speaks to project impact and achievements as well as operational findings including commonalities and differences between the three pilot projects and keys to success. It outlines lessons learned across the programming sites and in doing so it explores the role of a large International Non-Governmental Organization as a catalyst for change. Finally, it discusses the rigorous research and reporting framework driven by funders and development agencies, the rigidity of which struggled to capture the emergent nature of locally driven solutions

Digital Capitalism and Critical Media Education

    No full text
Digital capitalism has produced a new concentration of capital, knowledge, and power unprecedented in history. Quantification is fundamental to digital and capitalistic structural principles. In view of a comprehensive quantification and measurement of life and society, questions of meaning and significance must be asked beyond quantifying process structures. The first part of the article identifies capitalistic and digital structural principles, showing affinities between both principles. The second part points out central challenges and problem areas of digital capitalism. The third part discusses the manoeuvres of the IT industry in Germany to gain more influence on the education sector. Against the background of these developments, the last part outlines the need for alternative pathways and presents dimensions of a critical media education.[1]   [1] The article is based on two German language publications (Niesyto, 2017a, 2021)
