Ikke helt A4! : Betydningen av utforskende, kroppslige og materielle tegneprosesser

    No full text
This article presents an a/r/tographic investigation into contemporary drawing as action through a teaching project with a group of early childhood teacher education students. Our experience shows that drawing activities in kindergarten are often limited to table tasks using A4 sheets of paper. This restricts children\u27s opportunities to engage in full-body drawing experiences and confines their expressive potential to a small, limited format. In response, we explore alternative and experimental approaches to broaden the understanding of drawing. We ask: What happens when students are invited to engage in exploratory, material, and bodily drawing processes that go beyond the A4 format? What new knowledge about drawing is produced in this expanded context? The article examines drawing processes in relation to three key areas: 1) The body\u27s interactions (encounters?) with materials, 2) Presence, temporality, and rhythm, and 3) Risk and chance. In conclusion, we discuss how these exploratory, bodily, and material drawing practices can be integrated into the interactions between children and adults in both kindergarten and school settings.

Locating critical design literacy: Review of lower secondary pupils’ submissions for an ecovillage

    No full text
This paper addresses one of the challenges presented in the call for the October 2022 symposium prior to this special issue: How would we expect design literacy (knowledge) to be demonstrated by non-designers? The study focuses on Norwegian pupils aged 15–16 years who were tasked with designing shared-living spaces for an ecovillage, aiming to encourage mixed use, inclusive social interaction, and a reduction in the carbon footprint. The study explores the level of critical design literacy demonstrated in 55 digital submissions from the pupils. The results indicate that the pupils are more proficient in expressing and discussing aspects of social sustainability than they are at addressing environmental sustainability. The paper concludes by discussing how teachers might structure projects to encourage pupils to engage more deeply in transformative design practices. This paper addresses one of the challenges presented in the call for the October 2022 symposium prior to this special issue: How would we expect design literacy (knowledge) to be demonstrated by non-designers?

    No full text
Much criticism has been raised about too much theoretical content in vocational subjects in Norway. Classroom teaching is particularly hard on uneasy and energetic youth with a desire to work practically. Many at-risk-youth need an everyday school life that includes a significant amount of practice, and learning tasks that gives students an experience of meaning. Research shows that factors such as family background and gender influence students\u27 likelihood of completing and passing upper secondary education. Boys with a minority background in vocational fields of study have the lowest probability of completing their education in the normal timeframe. The aim of the article is to examine how the use of mini-companies in vg2 Motor Vehicles can promote mastery and motivation for this group of students at an east-end school in Oslo, and the article\u27s research question is. how can a project with use of mini-companies in vocational subjects contribute to relevance for boys in a metropolitan school? The study\u27s theoretical perspectives are based on theories that can be used in connection with the concepts of students with minority background, relevant vocational education and training and entrepreneurship. The study is based on qualitative interviews with ten students who were attending the second year of vocational education and training in Motor Vehicles, at a large upper secondary school in the capital region. The results show that the involved students mainly experienced the work with the mini-companies as motivating and many students experienced high learning outcomes.

Future Teachers Conceptualizing Democracy in Pre-war Ukraine, in Palestine, and Norway: Five Dimensions and the “wikied” Democracy Conceptions

    No full text
This article presents a qualitative study of future teachers’ conceptions of democracy in Ukraine, Palestine, and Norway during a pre-war and pre-pandemic period. In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in the understanding of the democratic concept and reduced engagement, particularly among youth, coinciding with an assumed global recession of democratic recession. However, democracy also evolves with societal developments, whereas education holds the mandate to renew democratic values in society. This study therefore aims to explore student teachers’ own definitions of the democracy concept. Employing a grounded theory approach, we compare the written responses of 619 student teachers from Ukraine, Palestine, and Norway. The analysis reveals that despite different emphases, democracy is articulated along five dimensions: 1) political systems, 2) political culture, 3) values, 4) actions, and 5) actors. However, the study also indicates a striking finding: To our surprise, there were many identical responses across the data material, interpreted as wikied copy-paste responses, which indicate a distance and irony towards standardized democracy concepts. Consequently, democracy education is in a limbo between standardization and fostering new dimensions, whereas the teachers’ tasks will be challenging in providing democracy concepts born anew for the next generation

Nordic rural policies for future service needs

    No full text
The demand for services in Nordic rural areas is changing. General population decrease poses challenges to rural public authorities to adapt their activities to the shrinking population, which in general is made up of fewer young people and more older people. Combined with a need to adapt the services to a changing climate, the increased budget restraints force the public authorities to focus on providing the most essential service needs now and in the future. The aim of this study is to identify the future service needs in rural areas, and how these are included in rural policy frameworks. The approach was to identify which rural services that are considered essential according to research literature, and to search for these in rural and regional policy in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, as well as the island regions of Faroese Islands, Greenland and Åland. The study has identified policy improvements to ensure access to essential services in rural areas, and to ‘future proof’ service provision. For the countries and regions here studied, especially emergency services and civil defence, as well as climate adaptation of services and the management of climate impacts, need further attention

Axes of resonance in music education: An artographic exploration

    No full text
This article discusses the potentials of a/r/tography aka artography against the background of life in an accelerating academia that is increasingly shallow and unfulfilling, and where quality is only indirectly measured using bibliometrics. We find Hartmut Rosa’s concept of resonance to be useful when discussing the values that get lost in such a system. We appreciate the arguments for a slower, deeper, and more collegial way of working. It is where the distractions of ordinary life intersect with the vision of a more profound, qualitative way of working that we make our arguments for an artographic way of being. However, we also identify challenges by drawing on experiences in our own working lives, and specifically our ongoing collaborative research project. Exploring options for navigating around the constraints, we suggest a ‘toolbox’ for how the individual artographer can contribute to making academia a more resonant space. Photo: Markus Tullber

Polyfona röster för framtiden: : A/r/tografens sammantrasslade tillblivelser

    No full text
The point of departure for this study is an exploration of how a/r/tography can be used as a method to contribute to new ways of thought and a changed understanding of the researcher, the artist and the teacher in higher education. The data is derived from digital meetings, dialogues, and exchanges of texts and works of art. The data produced is polyphonic, taking the form of assemblages (cf. Deleuze & Guattari, 1987). Data is analyzed and discussed by visualization of intra-actions (Barad, 2007), and the analyzing process is driven by affect (Kristeva, 1980, 1984), resulting in the discovery of the concept of intra-artistic-articulations, which challenges hierarchies and encourages the wild within the a/r/tographer.

    No full text
In Finland, the new Act on Court Fees (1455/2015) entered into force at the beginning of 2016. Court fees were at least doubled and certain proceedings that were previously free of charge became subject to a fee. The objective of the reform was to promote access to justice, improve the cost-effectiveness of fees, reduce manifestly unjustified use of court services, ensure a fair ratio between court fees and the costs of different court proceedings, and achieve a simple and transparent fee system. An impact assessment of the reform was carried out between 2022 and 2023 and showed that the objectives had been broadly achieved. However, the reform has an unforeseen negative impact: the social functions of the courts are no longer satisfactorily fulfilled. The article analyses in more detail how this is reflected in the administrative process of the regional administrative courts and the Supreme Administrative Court. The article is a legal analysis that is supplemented with empirical data. As a societal impact, the article aims to get the officials responsible for law drafting to pay attention to and acknowledge the problem highlighted in this article and to take the necessary measures to eliminate it. As a measure, it was proposed that fees in certain categories of cases should be significantly reduced to provide the courts with sufficient coverage of all types of cases to be able to perform their social functions effectively.I Finland trädde den nya lagen om domstolsavgifter (1455/2015) i kraft i början av 2016.

The Influence of User-oriented Design Research on Framing: A Case Study of Including Patient Perspectives in Bio-Medical Engineering

    No full text
The concept of framing has been used as a creative and constructive tool in the design process. This study provides new insights into frames and framing as a tool for understanding disciplinary differences in multidisciplinary collaborations where design research is included. With an increasing focus on patient participation in the design of health and assistive technology, the importance of considering the users\u27 perspectives cannot be overstated. However, bridging the gap between different disciplinary practices of framing problems that incorporate user experiences and values is a challenge. A case study of the (project name)(xxxx) research project was selected to investigate the practical implications of insights on mobility from a focus group interview with lower-limb prosthetic users. A follow-up ideation workshop with an interdisciplinary group of researchers from the project xxxx was used as the starting point for exploring different disciplinary perspectives. The research contributes to the concept on framing by demonstrating how examining relevant perspectives from the literature provides valuable insights into different ways of framing in the design process
