Social startup enterprises: the case of Hungary

    Get PDF
Startup enterprises are essentially profit-oriented enterprises. These days, in addition to profitoriented production and non-profit organisational forms, the emergence of a new kind of enterprise can be observed: the rise of social startup enterprises. These are profit-oriented companies but, besides wanting to gain profit and navigate successfully in the business world, they also want to meet certain social challenges and fill various social needs. Many studies deal with startups and social enterprises, but the specific area of social startups is a less explored field. The present study aims to explore successful social startups in Hungary; their features, the programmes supporting them and the competition among them. The study concludes with the examination of two examples of social startups and features two internationally-prestigious companies exposing the multilayered nature of social startup activities.szabadon elérhető / Open acces

Tourism perspectives in national parks — A Hungarian case study from the aspects of rural development

    Get PDF
Nature-based tourism has become increasingly popular in recent years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impacted the tourism sector and triggered contradictory processes, even in protected areas. This phenomenon opens up new opportunities for nature-based tourism from the perspective of rural development. In this study, we assess the relations between tourism and nature conservation and examine the characteristics of practical cooperation in three Hungarian national parks. Based on in-depth interviews (n = 76), document review, and analysis of tourism-related data, our research proves that nature-based tourism could play an essential role in rural development, but this is far from being fulfilled. None of the sectors have been able to impact the comprehensive development of the rural areas concerned. We conclude that sectoral partnership is inadequate, and there is no effective policy coordination. There is a lack of multiday tourism programs, and the currently available tourism infrastructure is insufficient. Initiatives such as the national park product trademark exist but are not well managed, so they do not have a meaningful impact. The results point out that cross-sector collaboration must be strengthened after the epidemic to provide a basis for policy coordination and joint planning.szabadon elérhető / Open acces

Politics without meso-level? No politics at the meso?

    Get PDF
The paper examines the role of meso-level governance in the Hungarian political system focusing on the county self-governments. The objective of the author is to introduce the consequences of the lack of meso-level politics for the backslide of the democratic system. The paper focusing on Hungarian counties seeks to explore the three-decade-long process leading to the progressive elimination of these bodies from the public power arena. The Hungarian case demonstrates how the overall administrative and political centralisation process has contributed to the hollowing-out of meso-level political actors. The Hungarian case study underlines the complex interrelations between the macro-political system, and the territorial political governmental arenas from the aspect of the centre and periphery power relations. Many European regional governments are not only platforms for territorial interest representation but also a counterweight to the central level contributing to the quality and stability of democratic governance. The study reviewing the situation of Hungarian counties draws on the author’s previous empirical research experiences and is a part of the ongoing research on governance issues of peripheral areas1. The results of the analyses discuss the implications of the hollowing-out of county governments on the electoral and party system, the modification of the institutional channels of interest representation. The Hungarian example appears to corroborate the analogy with the theory of second order elections. The theory of second order elections recognized the impact on the turnout and electoral preferences based on the changing role of different governance levels, by the same token, it seems that the weakening power position of the meso contributes to the decline of political competition and publicity by minimizing the interest of the public in general. The objective of the present study is to enrich the assessment of the relationship between territorial governance and democracy with some analytical options by demonstrating the implications of the “second order nature” of the meso.szabadon elérhető / Open acces

The spatial distribution of the medium-sized enterprise sector in the Hungarian urban hierarchy

    Get PDF
The present study investigates the spatial distribution of the medium-sized enterprise sector inthe Hungarian urban network. This tier of the enterprise network has been relatively neglected in comparison with large foreign-owned firms, but deserves a look due to its promising role in the regional development and development policy. Our previous research on medium-sized enterprises becomes particularly relevant when we consider that the dominant development model of post-socialist industry, based on the attraction of Foreign Direct Investment, is showing limits under the new economic crisis; and that the further increasein regional competitiveness necessitates stronger support for the development of domestic enterprises in both developed and underdeveloped regions. However, the development dilemmas of mid-sized enterprises have not been sufficiently considered in the previous decades, even though their position between larger (mostly foreign-owned) companies and small, capital-poor enterprises gives them significant development potential. Their contribution to domestic capital accumulation, ability to formulate independent competitive strategies, and the role in shaping the local or regional business environment deserves scrutiny. According to our preliminary assumption, the status of medium-sized enterprises in the urban hierarchy is shaped first and foremost by the population number of cities, since the proximity of human resources and marketsis a significant locational factor for medium-sized manufacturing firms. The study gives an overview of the evolution of the number of medium-sized enterprises and the average number of their employees in Hungarian cities since 2000, based on data published by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences CERS Databank and the Central Statistical Office. Structured interviews were conducted to detect the disparities at the level of urban regions, with a particular emphasis on Baranya County and the City of Pécs. The results demonstrate that entrepreneurial traditions and entrepreneurial visions are evaluated as important locational advantagesby domestically owned medium-sized enterprises.szabadon elérhető / Open acces
