Defeating the digital divide
Get PDFIn my personal experience I witnessed a discrepancy between what was available to schools and students from high and low socioeconomic areas. This made me wonder about their access to digital technologies, specifically how the digital divide affects education and how I can help as an educator. Using information from background research, an anonymous survey completed by my peers and current teachers, and an interview with an expert, I was able to conclude that digital technologies are an effective educational tool used to enrich students’ learning experiences. This can be achieved using a variety of different strategies and tools, including Smart technology, tablets, video blogs, and experiments. Educators should participate in professional development opportunities to help lessen the digital divide. This in-depth knowledge will give them the skills to effectively use digital technologies in their classrooms. Schools can also ensure students have access to technology to balance any lack of access at home

Dyslexia and digital technology
Get PDFThis research manuscript investigates how technology can be used to help students with dyslexia. Using a Google Forms survey and an interview with an expert on the topic, different types of technologies, the pros and cons of using assistive technology, and recommendations for implementing assistive technology in the classroom are listed. It was found that assistive technology is beneficial for students with dyslexia, but each student will benefit from different technologies. The main challenges with assistive technology that this research project uncovered included, glitches, not being user friendly, and the cost of some of these technologies. These problems apply mainly to higher tech assistive technologies, so including low tech assistive technologies in the classroom as well as high tech options could benefit students and avoid some of these challenges. Understanding some of the different assistive technologies that are available and beneficial for students with dyslexia is important for those involved in the education system so that we can give students with dyslexia the tools that they need to succeed. When educators know about, understand how to use, and have the resources to acquire assistive technologies then technology can be used to help students with dyslexia

Music and Self-Awareness: A Relationship or Not?
Get PDFIn this paper I reviewed two main themes: (1) how music can be used as a tool to increase an individual’s self-awareness (SA) and (2) how music and SA relates to individual and social psychology. To investigate these themes, I searched academic databases for music and its effects on SA at the individual and group level. This paper is focused on music in the context of therapy, development, neurobiology, the relationship between bodily sensations and conscious awareness, and group or social implications. Overall, I found that there are potential future applications for music in the context of individual or group therapy. Furthermore, due to lack of specific research in this area, I explored limitations in the research and offer suggestions for future researchers trying to determine if music has an effect on individual SA

A Commentary on the Relationship between Self-efficacy, Problem-focused Coping and Performance
Get PDFSelf-efficacy influences self-regulatory cognition and behaviour, including the way we approach and cope with problems and how we perform tasks. In this paper I examined the construct of self-efficacy and the strongly related variables of coping and performance to better understand how self-efficacy works at a fundamental level. I briefly reviewed some key concepts, measures and methods used in the study of self-efficacy, commenting on potentially important and understudied differences in coping styles that may influence self-efficacy. Specifically, problem-focused coping was the main coping strategy in the literature that had a positive correlation with both self-efficacy and performance. Lastly, I present some ideas for future research toward more understanding of the development of self-efficacy and its contributing factors
Vietnamese Boat People: The Stories of Vietnamese Refugees and their Journey in Seeking Asylum in Canada during the Late 1970s to the 1980s
Get PDFIn the years following the Vietnam War in 1975 and the especially during the year leading up to the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1978, more than one million people were forced to flee the war-torn countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The Vietnamese people who were displaced from their homes were placed in refugee camps all over south eastern Asia. These Vietnamese refugees were known as the “boat people".This essay will explore the lives of these "boat people" during their times as a displaced person and their journey to Canada. It will also examine the policies and programs that made it possible for the "boat people" to resettle in Canada, along with the public opinion surrounding these refugees. This will be done through the use of a variety of secondary and primary sources such as monographs, journal articles, news articles, government documents, interviews, and other sources. One source in particular is an interview of a Vietnamese family and their journey as Vietnamese refugees to becoming Canadian citizens
Freedmen in Context: Reconsidering the Role of the Freedmen’s Bureau in Reconstruction Histories
Get PDFThe Freedmen\u27s Bureau\u27s role has been panned by historians. Following the first Reconstruction, the Freedmen\u27s Bureau was characterized by failure. However, as we move into the second Reconstruction, historians began to debate the role the Bureau actually had. This historiography tracks the arguments relating to the Bureau over several decades and notes the trends which were used historically to characterize the successes and failures of the Bureau following the Civil War. This historiography tracks the changing identity of the Bureau from its earliest descriptions as being entirely neutral in Reconstruction, to being an oppressive figure in Reconstruction, then being a victim of racial policies, and eventually to a contextual identity that blends all previous characterizations
