The Role of Archaeomalacological Research in Sri Lanka: A Synthesis

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the role of malacological research in Sri Lanka and the significance it holds within the field of archaeology. Malacology, the study of Mollusca, is an interdisciplinary field that combines elements of biology, ecology, and archaeology. We explore and synthesize the diverse applications of malacology that have been used to understand past societies and environments. In the last fifty years, malacological research has gained traction within archaeological investigations, contributing valuable insights into human-environment interactions, subsistence patterns, and cultural dynamics. By integrating data from archaeological excavations where molluscan remains have been recovered, researchers have been able to reconstruct past environments, identify resource exploitation strategies, shed light on human dietary choices, trade networks, migration patterns, and socio-economic complexities of ancient Sri Lankan societies. We summarize existing literature on archaeomalacological research worldwide, as well as specific case studies within Sri Lanka. By placing these findings in the broader context of Sri Lanka’s archaeology, this paper aims to bridge existing knowledge gaps and contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the island’s rich cultural heritage, highlighting the pivotal role of archaeomalacology and its potential to enhance interpretations of past societies and environments in island Lanka

Perte, exil et mémoire dans Prendre refuge de Zeina Abirached et Mathias Énard

    Get PDF

Disrupting the Traditional Learning Paradigm: Place-Based Learning as Transformational Space

    Get PDF
Place-based learning may be one of the disruptive innovations called for by Randy Bass in his keynote address, Architecture of the Unexpected: Beyond the Learning Paradigm. Place-based learning goes beyond the learning paradigm by challenging students to partner with community members in a specific place, to learn through interacting with the people and spaces, and to think like agents of change. Working as co-designers, faculty, students, and community stakeholders become partners to promote learning and transformation of individuals and places. Using place-based learning in the university setting facilitates the application of global, generalizable knowledge to the specifics of local people and places, creating hope for solutions that address the locali realities of the world’s wicked challenges. &nbsp

Expanding a Professional Learning Community to Focus on Inclusion, Belonging, and Student Success

    Get PDF
Student success, particularly for students from marginalized populations, depends on a number of co-existing factors, not the least of which are a sense of belonging and the institution’s focus on inclusion. This article showcases the lessons learned from a professional learning community (PLC) for faculty, staff, and students, which was intentionally designed to create awareness of these issues and the need for courageous conversations to support change. The article discusses one particular PLC, a form of virtual “book club,” which occurred during the Fall 2021 semester (September–December). This PLC was focused on Anthony Jack’s text The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students, published in 2019, and encouraged a unique dialogue on student experience, co-facilitated by a team who critiqued aspects such as race, class, and first-generation status from different vantage points in higher education

Suburban and Rural Gang Presence: Preempting Violence in Response to This Shifting Threat for Hospitals

    Get PDF
The threat of gang violence spilling over into healthcare settings has become a reality in communities of all sizes. In particular, many people still perceive suburban and rural areas as being havens from significant organized crime when they may actually be places where criminal gang activity and violence is less detectable from law enforcement.  Additionally, lesser populated regions of the nation often have small and sometimes underfunded police departments, which can make those communities vulnerable and attractive to criminals trying to avoid larger cities with more sophisticated gang units. To deal with the potential for gang violence in the hospital setting, there is a need to understand the basics of the gang culture, related behaviors, and the continuing gang threat. The keys to a successful campaign against gang violence in a hospital setting are training and education of security and clinical staff, including coordination and cooperation with law enforcement, and proper reporting procedures and protocols

Abstract: The unregulated veterinary drug xylazine is emerging as a cause of death in State Correctional facilities.  Unlike the drug fentanyl, there is no antidote. The origins and toxicity of the drug are discussed and illustrated with a case study of an offender death due to xylazine mixed with fentanyl. There are precautions that prison officials can take, and correctional nurses that encounter users will be informed and better able to assess offenders for possible xylazine use due to physical signs on examination.                           &nbsp

Violence Against Women Act: Re-authorization and Impact for Forensic Health Professionals

    No full text
Since Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994, millions of dollars have been expended to raise awareness and combat domestic violence to improve and increase provision of services to victims of violence including domestic, intimate partner, stalking, dating, and sexual assault.  VAWA aims to provide housing and shelter services, and improves the manner in which the justice system responds to crimes of domestic and associated violence. (Seghetti & Bjelopera, 2012).  Federal grants were created and administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office for Violence Against Women (OVW) during the past 29 years and VAWA funding was reauthorized in 2022 to federal, state and tribal agencies.  This article reviews the history of the VAWA Act, tracks milestones in Federal funding, and recognizes forensic nursing benchmarks including the generalist approach
