Trustworthiness of Research Results: Significant or Not?
Get PDFEvidence informed practice relies integration of trusted research into decisions about care in collaboration with the patient’s wishes, available resources, and professional knowledge. In order to determine whether the research can be trusted, the professional requires an understanding of the quality of the research and potential for errors. All health professionals receive a basic research course in their undergraduate training, but it is sometimes difficult to apply this knowledge daily. The focus of this article is to review core concepts central to error and design, and to apply these to determine trustworthiness using a decision tree. It is hoped that this method will be helpful in examining future study findings and support decision making in your practice
The Lure of Jordan Peele’s Get Out!
Get PDFWhat does it take to make a horror movie a household hit? Get Out, a debut film from acclaimed writer-director Jordan Peele, is a cultural behemoth—winner of 152 industry awards—that tackles the trauma that black people face within the horror genre and beyond the screen. This paper explores what it is about Get Out that shook the very foundations of the horror genre to its core, and why this movie is still relevant today. It considers the argument that Get Out became a cultural hit because it mirrors the reality of many black and brown people, and critiques the idea that—in exposing the horrors of racism—the movie is doing anything new. It closes by arguing that the central character Chris’ survival is one of the strongest reasons why Get Out performed as well as it did and completely dominated conversations around social commentary and its place in the horror genre.
 
Development and Assessment of Learners’ Experiences with a Virtual Reality Learning Platform: Constructivist and Experiential Learning Pedagogies in Master of Physical Therapy Curriculum
Get PDFTeaching competencies for psychomotor skill development for manual handling techniques in the cervical regions is necessary for safe practice in physiotherapy. However, grasping anatomy and palpation can be challenging for students, and practice in the lab can lead to discomfort for students. To facilitate teaching and learning of this complex skill, we worked in partnership with a virtual reality (VR) industry partner who developed a customized VR application focusing on transverse ligament stress testing for manual therapy skills for Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) students. In this scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) project, eight MPT students participated in the evaluation of an innovative VR learning experience for manual therapy in the cervical spine. Students’ learning experiences with the custom virtual reality learning application were assessed using an observational study design with semi-structured interviews. Interview questions aligned with constructs that are recommended to assess learners’ attitudes toward VR environments. Student participants appreciated the usefulness of the application for studying and practicing the transverse ligament stress test and provided recommendations for enhancing the learning experience
SoTL as Reconciliation: Seeking to contribute to decolonization and Indigenization of teaching, learning, and research in Canadian Universities

I draw on decolonization and Indigenization literature to reflect on my SoTL practice, identify tensions, and look ahead to next steps in my research. From Early Migrations to Colonial Encounters: Archaeological Research on the Mannar-Jaffna Seaboard, Sri Lanka
Get PDFThe Mannar-Jaffna Seaboard (MJS), a region that played a critical role in Sri Lanka\u27s past, has seen over 150 years of archaeological research. While recent research programs employing advanced scientific techniques have been implemented, significant knowledge gaps persist. A comprehensive approach is needed to synthesize the archaeological past from prehistoric times to the recent colonial period. This review highlights some research questions emerging from previous studies advocating for further exploration. Since the MJS possesses an intertwined history with its coastal settings and resources, this article’s main focus is on understudied sites and periods to enhance the knowledge on coastal archaeological studies of Sri Lanka. Revisiting overlooked publications and addressing challenges such as data management and research integrity are crucial to gaining a more complete understanding of this region\u27s complex past.
