This This research compares the Goiso Oinan and Masi dialects, which are part of the Mentawai language in the Mentawai Islands. The research aims to analyze the linguistic similarities and differences, particularly in the aspects of phonology, morphology, and lexicon between these two dialects. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through direct interviews with native speakers of both dialects in the Goiso Oinan area located in the Sipora Utara District and the Masi area in the Siberut Barat Daya District. The data were analyzed using systematic techniques of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that there are words with similar phonemic forms and meanings in both dialects. However, morphological changes also occur through the addition, deletion, and substitution of phonemes in various word positions. Furthermore, there are dialectal variations with different word forms but the same meanings, reflecting the complexity and dynamic evolution of dialects influenced by geographical, social, and economic factors. The research also found that the Goiso Oinan dialect is the dominant dialect, while the Masi dialect serves as a contributing dialect. Approximately 60 percent of the lexical items share the same forms and meanings, while 40 percent differ in form but retain the same meanings. This study makes a significant contribution to the documentation and preservation of local dialects as part of the cultural heritage of Mentawai, as well as to the development of dialectology and Austronesian linguistics

An Analysis of Speaking Difficulties Among University EFL Students

Speaking proficiency remains one of the most challenging components of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning at the university level. This study investigates the linguistic, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to speaking difficulties among university EFL students. Using a mixed-methods descriptive design, data were collected through questionnaires, speaking performance assessments, interviews, and classroom observations. Quantitative findings show that linguistic limitations—particularly restricted vocabulary (M = 4.21), inaccurate pronunciation (M = 4.07), and grammatical inaccuracies (M = 3.98)—constitute the most dominant challenges. Psychological factors also play a significant role, with high speaking anxiety (M = 4.15) and fear of negative evaluation negatively correlating with performance (r = –0.63). Environmental and pedagogical conditions further intensify these difficulties, as large class sizes, limited speaking opportunities, and teacher-centered instruction reduce authentic oral interaction. Qualitative data support these findings by revealing recurrent anxiety, limited spontaneous speech, and restricted classroom engagement. The results highlight that speaking difficulties arise from the interplay of linguistic weaknesses, affective constraints, and contextual barriers. The study recommends integrated pedagogical approaches that strengthen linguistic competence, reduce anxiety, and provide more opportunities for meaningful communication to support students’ oral proficiency development

The title of this research is “The Comradery Between an FBI Agent and a Forger as seen in Frank Abagnale\u27s Catch Me If You Can”. This research problem focuses on the character differences between O’Riley as an FBI agent and Frank as a forger and the development of interpersonal relationships that occur between them as reflected in the novel Catch Me If You Can.The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method and the approach used is literary psychology with Freud\u27s psychological theory (1955) and Peplau\u27s interpersonal relationship theory (1952). The data in this novel is presented in the form of quotations and sentences derived from the characters of O\u27Riley and Frank, which explain their respective personalities and the development of their interpersonal relationships. The data collection technique used in this research is based on reading, marking, recording and categorising the data. This was done with the aim of distinguishing between data related to the personalities of O\u27Riley and Frank and data related to the interaction between the two characters, as well as its impact on the development of interpersonal relationships in Abagnale\u27s Catch Me If You Can.The results of this research show that Frank\u27s personality in Abagnale\u27s Catch Me If You Can is dominated by the Id, with less influence from the Ego and Superego. This is due to his parents\u27 divorce and his disadvantaged childhood, which drove him to seek pleasure through delinquency and crime, while O\u27Riley\u27s personality is characterised by the dominance of the Superego over the Id and Ego, due to his role as an FBI agent, who has the responsibility to uphold justice. In the interactions that make up the development of the interpersonal relationship between them, this is due to the emergence of mutual respect and appreciation in their interactions over time

This research analyzes the concept of "fragmented self" in Laurie Halse Anderson\u27s novel Wintergirls, focusing on Lia Overbrook\u27s struggles with anorexia nervosa and bulimia. This issue significantly reflects contemporary mental health challenges exacerbated by social pressures and internal conflicts. The concept of the fragmented self here refers to the disunity or incoherence encompassing an individual\u27s identity, thoughts, and emotions, often manifesting through dissociative conditions, eating disorders, self-harming behaviors, or severe anxiety. The objective of this research is to conduct an in-depth psychological analysis to uncover Lia\u27s self-fragmentation, identify its underlying causes, and understand the psychological consequences she experiences. In this analysis, the researcher utilizes the Freudian psychoanalytic theoretical framework, specifically the concepts of Id, Ego, and Superego. Through applying a descriptive qualitative method by careful textual analysis and literature review, the researcher found that anorexia nervosa is the root of Lia\u27s problems, triggering severe internal conflicts, and this is also reflected in the fragmented writing style of the novel. This research is expected not only to enrich the understanding of psychological concepts within literary contexts but also to raise awareness and empathy towards adolescent mental health issues. Through highlighting Lia\u27s journey, the researcher aims to explain the widespread issue of fragmented identity in contemporary society, providing insights into the psychological basis of such struggles and advocating for greater understanding and support for those facing similar challenges
