Local/State Emergency Management Relationships
Oregon is challenged with a regional liaison program that is understaffed, underfunded, and not a primary role within the Oregon Office of Emergency Management (OEM). This paper is going to examine what Oregon’s program could look like if the “regional liaison” was stand-alone position for several staff or at least a primary role within Oregon OEM. Programs from other states will be used for comparison in order to help build the picture. There are many challenges to the current program as well as creating a permanent liaison position - those will be briefly looked at. Lastly, some recommendations will be provided regarding how to overcome the challenges and what are some actions that can be taken to create an effective liaison program within Oregon OEM. Oregon currently has an ad hoc group of emergency managers stepping in to the role of a regional liaison as a side job to their already full workload

No Justice, No Peace: Addressing a Framework for Post-Conflict Restorative Measures and Transitional Justice in Regard to Foreign Fighters in the Syrian Civil War
The Syrian Civil War (2011-present) is one of the great humanitarian disasters of the modern age. The unprecedented involvement of foreign volunteers in the conflict, the complex and multi-layered nature of the war, and the allegations of war crimes against nearly all participants have made the conflict convoluted and complicated. If Syrians are to ever move on from the barbarism of this war, there must be a transitional justice process that addresses the wrongs committed against them. While transitional justice is an ever-evolving practice, it faces unique challenges in the Syrian theater. This thesis seeks to analyze and suggest possible post-conflict scenarios for a war with no clear end in sight, which involves thousands of citizens from around the world participating in alleged war crimes. The Syrian conflict requires a unique iteration of transitional justice in order to instill and maintain peace, as well as deter future mobilizations of massive foreign fighter forces
Invertebrate Neurophysiology: Testing the Efficacy of Natural Insecticides
Insecticides are widely used in agriculture. While there are several classes of synthetic insecticides that are highly effective against insects, there is data suggesting that these compounds are also toxic to non-target species. However, compounds like caffeine have been shown to act as natural insecticides. Here we investigate the effects of a wellknown class of insecticides, pyrethroids, as well as natural compounds such as caffeine. Since insecticides work at the level of the nervous system we propose to measure neural activity in crickets (Acheta Domestica) after exposure to synthetic and naturally occurring insecticides. Here we show our approach and preliminary experiments which demonstrate successful neuron recordings from the cricket
