Adjunct Faculty: The Silent Majority
No full textThe increase in use of part-time faculty, commonly referred to as “adjunct,” has shifted the academic workforce. Utilization of this populace has increased steadily over the past several years and is anticipated to continue this growth as colleges and universities seek cost-cutting measures in balancing their annual budgets. With this increase, however, comes unexpected consequences for the educators who fill these roles; often they are underpaid, overworked, and employed tenuously from term-to-term with no security in employment. This dissertation examines the adjunct faculty role; including what adjunct faculty need to be successful, versus what they have been provided to succeed in their roles. The research uses a constructivist framework alongside Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg’s Theory of Motivation to juxtapose the adjunct work experience with traditional models of satisfaction and self-actualization; the data collected support the theory that adjunct faculty cannot feel secure and valuable in their role under the current adjunct faculty work model, and provides insights for administrators in an effort to better support these faculty and potentially positively impact student outcomes in kind
The Impact of Life Skills Students on General Education Elementary Teachers\u27 Attitudes Toward Inclusive Education
No full textNumerous general education teachers are including students with disabilities in the classroom. The range of academic, emotional, and behavioral needs of students grows with more inclusion occurring classrooms. This qualitative single case study addressed two questions. First, how does the inclusion of life skills students (students with severe disabilities) impact teachers’ views on inclusive education? That question also included sub questions of how do (primary, intermediate, and specialist) teachers describe their attitude toward, and experience with, inclusive education? Secondly, how do elementary teachers describe successful supports and resources that enable them to successfully practice inclusive education in a school that includes life skills students in the general education classroom? The researcher intended to provide insight from one school that practices inclusion regularly and to explore its impact on general education teachers’ attitude toward inclusion. Through semi-structured interviews, participating teachers tended to have a positive attitude and encouraged the inclusion of life skills students (students with severe disabilities). Even though participating teachers tended to have a positive attitude toward inclusion, there were several supports and resources that teachers needed to create a successful general education classroom. In general, teachers in this study needed more time, training, and qualified assistants. The implications and recommendations for future research based on the findings from this study are discussed

No full textThe Multnomah County Emergency Management (MCEM), located in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to preparing for disasters through scheduled training, exercises, community engagement, building community resilience, and collaboration with stakeholders. MCEM’s mission is “working together to build resilient communities” (MCEM, 2018, p.1). MCEM works with preparedness partners in the public sector, private sector, and non-profit/volunteer organizations, to coordinate a collaborative effort within Multnomah County and create a resilient community through strong plans and policies, exercises, and training. Training opportunities are “designed to increase disaster resilience and response readiness across Multnomah County in preparation for potential emergencies and/or disasters” (MCEM Training and Exercise, 2018, p.1)
Hilton Garden Inn Emergency Operations Analysis and Proposal
No full textThis project is assigned as a senior practicum by Concordia University for seniors to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their college education in pursuit of a degree in Homeland Security. The ability to identify and assess threat and risk in a company’s emergency operations is a definite demonstration of a student’s acquired knowledge and skill. Such an assessment was done for the Hilton Garden Inn located in Corvallis, Oregon. Through assessment of their current emergency operations, concerns were found regarding their lack of employee training, updates to the emergency operations plan, and documents. This project outlines the concerns found and provides the Hilton Garden Inn with viable solutions and options to those concerns. The ultimate goal of this project proposal is for The Hilton Garden Inn (HGI) to uphold mission in providing the best service for guests and a safe environment for guests as well as employees. As a company in the hospitality sector, HGI is therefore prepared for all emergency situations and will handle such events with efficiency and professionalism
Fundraising Managers’ Perceptions of Online Education’s Influence on Fundraising Practices and Giving
No full textThe influence of online education on higher education fundraising practices and giving patterns is not well understood. This qualitative case study explored how fundraising managers perceived the impact of online education on higher education fundraising. To explore this phenomenon, the researcher interviewed fundraising managers at private, nonprofit colleges and universities in the western United States, and reviewed publicly available documents on the participant schools fundraising and financial information. The interviews demonstrated that study participants were concerned about connecting with graduates of online programs, and perceived that online students may have less affinity for their alma mater than on-ground alumni. The fundraising managers interviewed reported that data on the giving patterns and the most effective strategies to engage online alumni are still emerging. Despite this lack of information, the fundraising managers interviewed believed that targeted, personalized solicitations may be the best way to engage and solicit funds from graduates of online programs
Effects of Standardized Testing in Urban Turn Around Schools
No full textStandardized tests are intended to show what students have learned and retained in a classroom setting. The purpose of the qualitative case study was to understand the effects of standardized testing in urban turn around schools. The research question that guided the study was: What are the experiences of teachers regarding the use of standardized testing, in urban turnaround schools in the south? The sample was obtained through a snowball strategy, and it consisted of 11 participants who were teachers from an Izone school in the Southern United States. The data obtained were interviews and artifacts (lesson plans). Inductive analysis was used to analyze collected data. Findings indicated that teacher participants perceived that standardized testing hinders students\u27 achievements performance
