Perceptions of Academic Success and Quality of Life Issues Among Undergraduate University Students
The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain an understanding about the experiences of undergraduate students regarding quality of life and academic success at a midsized Midwestern university. Two research questions drove the study: How do university students perceive quality of life issues as they relate to academic success, and what life experiences are identified as influencing college student’s perception of a positive or negative quality of life? Purposeful sampling was used and 11 students volunteered for the study. All were undergraduates in a college of health professions. The data collection instruments were semistructured interviews, secondary semi structured interviews and voluntary journals. The typological analysis approach was used to analyze the data collected from interviews and journals. The key findings were that participants identified four major themes that guided their understanding of quality of life and academic success: (a) purpose and meaning in life relates to overall academic success and quality of life, (b) stress, coping and academics were perceived as important to quality of life and success, (c) relationships with faculty are desired by participants and important to quality of life and academic success, and (d) technology and social media are perceived positively and negatively; they help and hinder academic success and quality of life. The ability to manage and cope with issues related to the above themes seemed to be related to development of the student, and experience at the university
Perception of One’s Circumstances as it Relates to Satisfaction with One’s Life
I explored the relationship between how one perceives the circumstances of their life and how satisfied one is with the life they are living. Researchers have suggested that there is a strong desire for people to be happy (Broyles & King, 1997; Deiner, Shao, Smith, & Suh, 1995; King & Napa, 1998), and that being happy can positively influence various areas of one’s life (Deiner, King, & Lyubomirsky, 2005; Watkins, 2016). Furthermore, circumstances such as gender (Deiner & Pavot, 2013), age (Watkins, 2016), income (Deiner & Biswas-Deiner, 2002), intelligence (Choi & Veenhoven, 2012), and geography (Schkade & Kahneman, 1998) have little to do with one’s level of subjective well-being. I correlated results from the Satisfaction with Life survey (SLWS; Deiner, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985), and a life rating measure (Cummins & Nistico, 2002) to illustrate how perception of circumstances relate to how satisfied one is with their life. The results indicate that there was a significant positive correlation (r=0.75, p\u3c.01) between the Life Rating (M=75.90 SD=14.90) and the SWLS (M=23.93 SD=4.82). I found that most of the people that participated in the life rating measure desired similar things for themselves, and were in similar places relative to achieving their own desired goals
Conviction Beyond a Reasonable Suspicion? The Need for Strengthening the Factual Basis Requirement in Guilty Pleas
Does the court, before accepting a guilty plea, check the accuracy of the plea agreement in any significant way? This article addresses the issues on judges being unconcerned or the inconsistent practice of guiding the stages of guilty plea. The article further suggests that the judge should carefully review its factual basis to avoid a wrongful guilty plea. Although Rule 11(b) of the Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure requires the judges to check the factual basis of the guilty plea, the rule is not paid much attention to legal professionals. Setting the adversarial culture aside, the rule itself has a structural problem not to be enforced properly during a plea colloquy. Instead of revising the rule, this article proposes a newer interpretation to induce judges more responsible to confirm the factual basis. This could be a practical solution 1) to filter out an inaccurate pleading guilty, 2) to increase the accountability of the prosecution in guilty plea, and 3) to help the defendant make more informed plea decisions
Emergency Action Plan for Lakeview Recreation Center
The objective of the Lakeview Recreation Center Emergency Action Plan (EAP) is to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Emergency Action Plan Standard, 29 CFR 1910.38 and to prepare employees for dealing with emergency situations. This plan is designed to minimize injury, loss of human life and company resources by training employees, procuring, and maintaining necessary equipment and assigning responsibilities. This plan addresses all emergencies that may reasonably be expected to occur at Lakeview Recreation Center
Portland International Airport Patient Tracking and Family Reunification Proposal
This proposal is designed to layout some of the problems that exist that may hinder the Port of Portland’s ability to effectively track patients/victims and reunify family members after a large scale incident at the Portland International Airport (PDX). It also includes recommendations that may facilitate the process of implementing a solution. Generally, the task of patient/victim tracking and family reunification is a challenge due to chaotic scene dynamics following an incident (Jui, 2018). The goal is to create a consistent and functional plan that facilitates efficient, accurate, and expedited patient/victim identification to reunify families after an incident
Project Proposal: Incident Communication Strategy
This document is a project proposal for Nike Resilience Business Continuity department. The Business Continuity department has several Directors who along with their Managers create Emergency Operation Plans (EOP) and conduct risk assessments to protect company assets for their specific regions. Nike World Headquarters (WHQ) has spearheaded the Nike Emergency Response Team (ERT) program, who’s focus is to respond and tend to Nike employees until local responders arrive. This project proposal focuses on the Americas Region specifically Nike World Headquarters (WHQ) located in Beaverton, Oregon. Working alongside the Business Continuity Director for Nike WHQ, a student of Concordia’s Homeland Security Program worked to identify potential problems facing Nike during a crisis, generate possible solutions for those problems
Digital Design and Fabrication of an Atmospheric Aerosol Impactor Using a Formlabs Form 2 SLA 3D Printer
Atmospheric aerosol (AA) particles are defined as solid or liquid particles suspended in the air. AA particles smaller than 10 μm in diameter are small enough to bypass the upper respiratory system which functions as a filter for harmful substances entering the lungs. AA particles can be collected using a device called an aerosol impactor. After collection, the particles can be analyzed offline for chemical composition using a variety of analytical techniques. The weight of a commercially manufactured AA particle impactor poses an issue if attached to a mobile AA particle sampling platform such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). In this study a lightweight plastic AA impactor is designed and fabricated using Autodesk AutoCAD 2016 and a Formlabs Form 2 SLA 3-D printer

STEM Teaching and Learning Strategies of High School Parents With Homeschool Students
The purpose of this research study was to investigate the teaching and learning strategies used by homeschool parents with high school students. A qualitative case study was used which began with the administration of an open-ended questionnaire to a homeschool community in the southern United States. Twenty-nine parents completed the questionnaire, and 10 of those volunteered to participate in the follow-up procedures, which included interviews, observations, and document collection. Results indicate that parents use a variety of teaching and learning strategies including individualized instruction, mastery learning, self-directed study, collaboration with peers and adults, and application and connection of information
