First Year Teachers\u27 Perceptions of Their Preparation for Teaching English Language Learners

    No full text
The number of English language learners (ELLs) in public schools is increasing rapidly throughout the United States. All teachers are expected to meet the individual needs of these culturally and linguistically diverse students in their classrooms. However, little training and guidance in preservice teacher education programs is being provided to prepare future teachers. This study investigated how first year teachers viewed their preparation of working with English language learners in their preservice teacher education program. From a transformative learning lens, it is recommended that preservice teacher education programs consider effective ways to provide a variety of field experiences and classroom experiences that will help prospective teachers understand how to teach ELLs. The research question was How do first year teachers perceive their preparation of working with English language learners? Drawing from qualitative data, the study described the experiences of six first year teachers and included their personal background, field experiences, and classroom experiences. The data revealed that teachers need more ELL one-on-one opportunities, professional development, and instructional support and resources in their preservice teacher education program

How Shipbuilding was the Blessing and the Curse of Sunderland

    No full text
This thesis argues and consequently proves how the shipbuilding industry in Sunderland along the River Wear, was the blessing and the curse of the city. The specialisation of the industry around the turn of the Industrial Revolution resulted in Sunderland becoming famous across the world for shipbuilding. This specialisation would prove pivotal during the Great War and the Second World War. The U.K. relied on the remarkable output of ships from Sunderland’s yards to keep the country afloat. Britain’s survival in both conflicts was largely dependent on the continuation of importing goods from allied countries. This dependence meant that ships proved invaluable. Sunderland was able to contribute significantly to both war efforts. However, the specialisation which was necessary for this elevated contribution during the wars, would also prove to be the city’s biggest misfortune. Focusing almost all of the city’s economy towards shipbuilding resulted in Sunderland being vulnerable to damaging economical fluctuations. When the demand for ships fell during the interwar period and after WWII, the shipyards would suffer. The ship workers would be cast away by the nation as no real financial support was offered. The complex relationship between Sunderland and shipbuilding is epitomised by the events leading up to and after both World Wars. Thus shipbuilding was consequently the blessing and the curse of Sunderland

UV Irradiation of Thymine Molecules and Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry

    No full text
Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) are products of a photochemical reaction caused by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of adjacent pyrimidine molecules. Thymine dimers, the most common form of CPDs in the body, are of particular interest because they are the cause of the majority of UV-induced mutations in mammals, often resulting in the development of skin cancers. Because of the photochemical properties of the reactions of thymine dimers, and the relation of these dimers to cancer pathogenesis, the formation and analysis of thymine dimers in a laboratory setting could be a useful educational tool for pre-medicine students learning about organic and photochemistry. Previous studies have shown that thymine monomers, which are normally not volatile enough for gas chromatography, are able to undergo gas chromatography after being derivatized with isobutyl chloroformate (IBCF). In this study, using IBCF as a derivatizing agent for the analysis of UV-irradiated thymine dimers, the use of gas chromatography – mass spectrometry for analysis is attempted

Excerpt: The first newly constructed school in Portland in 20 years opens this week. The new Faubion K-8 school in NE Portland is much more than a typical school. It will follow a new education model called “3 to PhD” alongside Concordia University. College students in Concordia’s education program will work with Faubion students

Self-Efficacy Perception in 11th-grade African-American Girls’ Decisions to Pursue STEM Careers in Higher Education: A Case Study

    No full text
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore 11th grade African American female students\u27 perception of self-efficacy, in their consideration to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and STEM-related majors in college and careers. The theoretical foundation used for this study was the social cognitive theory. The research questions that were used to guide this study focused on how self-efficacy affected the decision of African American high school female students to consider pursuing STEM majors in college, and how African-American high school females perceived factors influencing their choice to pursue studies in STEM fields in major secondary consideration. Data collection consisted of the STEM self-efficacy questionnaire administered at the beginning of the school year and re-administered after the first semester. One-on-one interviews of twenty African American urban high school females were also conducted. This study explored the connections between academic, emotional, and social self-efficacy amongst the students when considering whether to pursue STEM-based majors in college. The data supported the research questions that self-efficacy was directly related to the student\u27s perception in pursuing STEM and STEM-related majors and careers. The four themes that emerged were: academic success, which hinged on being successful in mathematic classes, the role of family and friends support, harmony with classmates, and concerns of how success looks. Findings from this study provided educators and other stakeholders with ideas to assist focusing on strengthening African American female’s STEM representation and closing the leaky STEM pipeline
