Challenging Gifted Students in the General Education Classroom
Get PDFThis Honors in Education research focuses on gifted instruction in the general education early childhood classroom. Research found that being challenged in the general education classroom (in addition to in the gifted classroom) is a vital aspect of students’ gifted education. In addition to research on the importance of gifted education, effective strategies and best practices for challenging these students were explored through teacher interviews. Common themes such as strategic grouping, differentiation, enriched curriculum, problem solving, and project-based learning emerged. These strategies were compiled and organized into a digital toolkit website. This digital toolkit can serve as a teacher resource used to improve differentiated instruction and instruction specifically for advanced learners in the general classroom

Becoming Feelings Detectives: A Curriculum Designed to Build Empathy in Students with High- Incidence Disabilities
Get PDFResearch indicates that many students with special needs have greater difficulty mastering social skills than their typically-developing peers (Wiley & Silperstein, 2015). Strong social skills are critical to positive school and life outcomes for students, making social skills deficits even more alarming for children with disabilities (CASEL, 2019). This curriculum aims to foster empathy in students with special needs in kindergarten through grade two by providing direct instruction and practice in social skills. Specific social skills addressed in the curriculum include: naming feelings, greeting others, demonstrating active listening behaviors, and demonstrating sharing behaviors. Through children\u27s books, role playing, and authentic learning opportunities, students learn and practice social skills that lay the foundation for later empathetic behavior. All activities within the curriculum work to support students’ generalization of skills, often another area of concern for students with special needs (McIntosh & McKay, 2008). Outcomes are measured through the use of parent and teacher questionnaires, teacher observations, and student self-assessments. Information collected through these assessments can be applied to further social skill instruction and opportunities for skill practice
Examining Preservation Methods for Long-Term Fecal Matter Storage
Get PDFFecal Matter Transplants (FMT) are often used as a last resort treatment for patients who have a C. diff infection. Clostridium difficile (C. diff) is a common hospital-acquired pathogen which replaces healthy bacteria in the GI tract and disrupts their normal function. Due to antibiotic overuse, C. diff often resurfaces after antibiotic treatment. In order to more effectively treat C. diff and other bacterial diseases or infections, other methods of treatment should be utilized. FMT’s use stool samples from healthy individuals to reestablish the microbiota in the gut after an infection occurs. Because of U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations and social stigma, antibiotic treatments are the preferred method to treat C. diff. In order to reduce the social stigma surrounding FMT’s, research of further methods of fecal matter preservation could lead to a more personalized stool banking process. Utilization of personally banked stool samples could more effectively reintroduce naturally growing bacteria in the gut and decrease the chance of illness after treatment. Previous data verifies the preservation of DNA in samples that have been stored. However, the viability of the cells was unknown. The focus of the conducted research this summer was to test the viability of cells using stool samples donated by dogs. Samples were stored at -80oC in four different conditions for three weeks to determine the best method for cell preservation. Our goal was to identify the method that best retains cell function. To measure the metabolic activity of living cells after storage, BioLOG plates were used. Analysis of the data collected from the BioLOG plates will help to determine cell viability and assist in supporting further preservation methods in the future
