Support Networks, Students with Disabilities, and Social and Academic Contexts in a School Environment : A Scoping Review
Get PDFAccording to the National Center for Education Statistics, 7 million students are receiving special education services as of the 2017-2018 school year (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019). That still does not include students with undeclared or undiagnosed disabilities in school. These students are at a disadvantage when it comes to participating in a school environment because students with disabilities tend to struggle more than typical students with social and academic aspects in school (Lackaye & Margalit, 2006).
The National Center for Learning Disabilities states that students with learning disabilities are often misunderstood and are ineffectively taught by untrained educators, leading to poor outcomes and limited opportunities. Because of schools’ lower expectations and standards for students with learning disabilities, those students are not receiving the push they need to prepare for college or the workforce (National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2017). Nationwide, 7 out of 10 students with specific learning disorders and other health impairments spend around 80% of their day in general education classrooms where teachers may not be prepared to support them effectively (2017). However, there are ways to benefit those students through the use of training/educating school staff, advocating for the individual needs of students, and providing them with access to the technology and services they need to succeed
Using Values, Beliefs, and Norms to Predict Conserving Behaviors in Organizations
No full textAlthough micro-level research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has started to grow, little is known about the antecedents of employee conserving behaviors.(e.g., recycling, repurposing or reusing materials, and saving energy). Conserving behaviors can be explained by the individual-level psychographic variables captured by the values-beliefs-norms (VBN) framework. Given the mixed empirical findings of previous VBN applications in organizations, this paper examines the full VBN model within a workplace context and extends the model by analyzing the effects of VBN variables on employee conserving behaviors. A quantitative survey with a sample of 714 UK office-based employees across a range of industries is utilized and data are analyzed using a Smart PLS approach. We find direct and indirect effects among the VBN variables: in particular, personal norms strongly affect all conserving behaviors studied, highlighting the relevance of norming interventions in organizations. Theoretical and managerial implications are provided
An Interoception-Based Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Pilot Study
No full textThe ability to notice internal sensations such as tense muscles, a rumbling stomach, or heavy eyelids and translate these internal sensations into emotional meaning such as anger, hunger, and fatigue is an important skill called interoceptive awareness. Deficits in interoception have been discovered within many conditions including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), obesity, depression, trauma, and others. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a condensed, 8-week intervention based on The Interoception Curriculum: A Guide to Developing Mindful Self-Regulation (IC) in children with ASD. Given the novelty of this intervention topic, an intentionally small pilot study was completed with eight autistic students, ages 6–13 years, enrolled in self-contained autism support classrooms. A significant increase in scores on an interoception measure were found as a result of the intervention. Interoception is hypothesized in the research as being foundational for emotional regulation and occupational performance. Therefore, these preliminary findings provide support for future, larger studies that examine the effectiveness of interoception-based interventions, such as the IC
The Chaplains’ Role: Insights and Awareness through the Lens of Occupational Therapy
Get PDFThe impetus for this study began with the consideration of what various practitioners have to offer in the delivery of services that attend to the spiritual nature of patients within an interdisciplinary healthcare team. To better understand that perspective, the authors of this study decided to initially investigate the literature specifically related to the role of chaplains to better situate the constructs of spirituality and healthcare. From the reviewed literature, we ascertained the general role and tasks of the chaplain, and the value of interdisciplinary work, albeit primarily with nurses and physicians. Despite these insights, we (all from an occupational therapy perspective) still did not fully comprehend the meaning or essence of the chaplain’s role. The research aim was to be able to elucidate the role of chaplains within a healthcare context by asking chaplains to share their own meaning of chaplaincy within healthcare
