    Dog-assisted interventions for children and adults with mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions:systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Dog-assisted interventions (DAIs) to improve health-related outcomes for people with mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions are becoming increasingly popular. However, DAIs are not based on robust scientific evidence. AIMS: To determine the effectiveness of DAIs for children and adults with mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions, assess how well randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are reported, and examine the use of terminology to classify DAIs. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. RCTs were grouped by commonly reported outcomes and described narratively with forest plots reporting standardised mean differences and 95% confidence intervals without a pooled estimate. The quality of reporting of RCTs and DAIs was evaluated by assessing adherence to CONSORT and the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) guidelines. Suitability of use of terminology was assessed by mapping terms to the intervention content described. RESULTS: Thirty-three papers were included, reporting 29 RCTs (with five assessed as overall high quality); a positive impact of DAIs was found by 57% (8/14) for social skills and/or behaviour, 50% (5/10) for symptom frequency and/or severity, 43% (6/14) for depression and 33% (2/6) for agitation. The mean proportion of adherence to the CONSORT statement was 48.6%. The TIDieR checklist also indicated considerable variability in intervention reporting. Most DAIs were assessed as having clear alignment for terminology, but improvement in reporting information is still required. CONCLUSIONS: DAIs may show promise for improving mental health and behavioural outcomes for those with mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly for conditions requiring social skill support. However, the quality of reporting requires improvement

    Explanation for symptoms and biographical repair in a clinic for persistent physical symptoms

The original publication is available at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ssmqr.2024.100438 Introduction Biographical disruption describes the process by which illness impacts not just on a person’s body and their participation in activities, but also on their sense of self. Biographical disruption is often followed by a process of biographical repair in which identity is reconstructed and a new normality is restored. People with persistent physical symptoms (sometimes referred to as medically unexplained symptoms) experience biographical disruption. This can be complicated by lack of explanation and the implication that if the problem is not medical, then it might be the person/psychological. We aimed to examine this tension in people attending a novel “Symptoms Clinic” for people with persistent physical symptoms. Methods This study reports an embedded qualitative study in a UK based randomised controlled trial. Data were collected by audio recordings of consultations and semi-structured interviews with patients. We used theoretically informed thematic analysis with regular coding and discussion meetings of the analysis team. This analysis explores the role of intervention components in facilitating biographical repair. Results The lack of acceptable explanation for persistent symptoms acted as a block to biographical repair. In the clinic, multi-layered explanations were offered and negotiated that viewed persistent symptoms as understandable entities rather than as indicators of something still hidden. These explanations allowed study participants to make sense of their symptoms and in turn opened new opportunities for self-management. The result was that participants were able to reframe their symptoms in a way that enabled them to see themselves differently. Even if symptoms had not yet improved, there was a sense of being better. This can be understood as a process of biographical repair. Conclusion Explaining persistent physical symptoms enables biographical repair.     Driver-Net: Multi-Camera Fusion for Assessing Driver Take-Over Readiness in Automated Vehicles

    Ensuring safe transition of control in automated vehicles requires an accurate and timely assessment of driver readiness. This paper introduces Driver-Net, a novel deep learning framework that fuses multi-camera inputs to estimate driver take-over readiness. Unlike conventional vision-based driver monitoring systems that focus on head pose or eye gaze, Driver-Net captures synchronised visual cues from the driver's head, hands, and body posture through a triple-camera setup. The model integrates spatio-temporal data using a dual-path architecture, comprising a Context Block and a Feature Block, followed by a cross-modal fusion strategy to enhance prediction accuracy. Evaluated on a diverse dataset collected from the University of Leeds Driving Simulator, the proposed method achieves an accuracy of up to 95.8% in driver readiness classification. This performance significantly enhances existing approaches and highlights the importance of multimodal and multi-view fusion. As a real-time, non-intrusive solution, Driver-Net contributes meaningfully to the development of safer and more reliable automated vehicles and aligns with new regulatory mandates and upcoming safety standards

    Ecological restoration of rubber monocultures: strategies for biodiversity and ecosystem recovery in tropical regions

    Sustainable conversion of uneconomic rubber monocultures is essential for restoring degraded tropical rainforests and achieving the goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030). Here, we discuss existing ecological restoration approaches that may be applicable to converting rubber monocultures in protected and marginal areas with high conservation value but less economic potential. Before selecting restoration interventions, practitioners should conduct comprehensive assessments of landscape context, land-use history, forest regeneration status, and resource availability. Natural forest regeneration is typically a low-cost restoration option for rubber monocultures that have encroached into protected areas, where nearby natural forest fragments can provide seed sources. In other marginal areas, assisted natural regeneration and active planting can promote more rapid recovery. The restoration strategies outlined here can support the restoration of 1,900,000 ha of rubber monocultures in marginal zones and other economically unsustainable monoculture plantation crops, thereby making a significant contribution to global restoration targets by 2030

    Search for heavy neutral leptons in decays of W bosons using leptonic and semi-leptonic displaced vertices in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search is performed for long-lived heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), produced through the decay of a W boson along with a muon or electron. Two channels are explored: a leptonic channel, in which the HNL decays into two leptons and a neutrino, and a semi-leptonic channel, in which the HNL decays into a lepton and a charged pion. The search is performed with 140 fb−1 of √ s = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. No excess of events is observed; Dirac-like and Majorana-like HNLs with masses below 14.5 GeV and mixing coeffcients as small as 10−7 are excluded at the 95% confidence level. The results are interpreted under different assumptions on the favour of the leptons from the HNL decays
