The experiences of neurodivergent Library and Information Science [LIS] professionals working in academic libraries – a case study
Literature on the experiences of neurodivergent LIS professionals working in academic libraries is sparse. Although anecdotal evidence suggests that librarianship may be an attractive profession for neurodivergent adults, significant challenges remain. This paper discusses a case study undertaken in a large research-intensive university in England. This case study investigates the experiences of neurodivergent LIS individuals, examining the impact of recruitment practices, the workplace environment, daily work and tasks, and their professional skills as perceived through the lens of neurodivergency. Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six participants who identified as neurodivergent. A reflexive approach was taken to the research and thematic analysis used to analyse the results. This research finds that neurodivergent individuals encounter challenges with recruitment, the physical and sociocultural environment, and their daily work. This includes challenges with panel interviews, the sensory environment, the “unspoken rules” of social, professional expectations, and a conflicting desire for novelty and routine. Access to adjustments vary and are reliant on individual and institutional knowledge of neurodivergence, and the psychological safety required to disclose. Neurodivergent individuals are keen to use and develop their skills, however, employers appear nervous to discuss professional development opportunities. Although neurodivergent individuals are cautiously optimistic about their experiences, there is a need for increased understanding within the sector of their lived experiences to provide support. This paper puts forward recommendations for practice and identifies areas for future research that will help to improve the experiences of neurodivergent professionals
Energetic and Economic Aspects of Rebound, Part II: Applications of the Framework
Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation
measure, but rebound can ‘‘take back’’ energy savings. However, the absence of solid analytical
foundations hinders empirical determination of rebound magnitudes. In Part I, we developed
foundations of a rigorous, analytical, consumer-sided rebound framework that is approachable for
both energy analysts and economists. In this paper (Part II), we develop energy, expenditure, and
consumption planes, a novel, mutually consistent, and numerically precise way to visualize and
illustrate rebound. Further, we operationalize the macro factor (k) for macroeconomic rebound.
Using the framework and rebound planes, we calculate and show total rebound (using k= 3) for
two examples: energy efficiency upgrades of a car (56.2%) and an electric lamp (67.0%). We also
calculate rebound when extending the framework to include an energy price effect. Finally, we
provide information about new open-source software tools for calculating rebound magnitudes
and visualizing rebound effects
Ongoing large ozone depletion in the polar lower stratospheres: the role of increased water vapour
The very low temperatures of the polar lower stratosphere lead to the efficient seasonal depletion of ozone following the formation of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) and heterogeneous chlorine-activating reactions on their surfaces. The Montreal Protocol has controlled the production of major chlorine- (and bromine-) containing Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs) and the stratospheric Cl and Br loadings have been slowly decreasing for over two decades. However, we are still experiencing very large (by some measures record) ozone depletion in the Antarctic and cold Arctic springs. There are a variety of factors involved but here we focus on the possible role of increased stratospheric water vapour, for example as occurred due to the eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in January 2022. We perform idealised TOMCAT three-dimensional chemical transport model experiments to investigate the impacts of a Hunga-like eruption being followed by conditions such as the very cold Arctic winter of 2019/2020; and contrast the impact of the cold Antarctic spring of 2020 with the previous warmer, more disturbed year of 2019. In the Antarctic, efficient dehydration by sedimenting ice PSCs limits the impact of a 1 ppmv increase in H2O to a maximum additional depletion of 16 Dobson Units (DU) in 2020 and 11 DU in 2019 at the vortex edge in late September. A 1 ppmv H₂O increase in the cold Arctic vortex of 2019/2020 causes a maximum additional depletion of 16 DU at the vortex edge in mid March. The direct chemical impact of water vapour from a Hunga-like eruption on polar ozone is therefore modest in any given year, given natural variability. However, regular increased H₂O injection or production from increased CH₄ oxidation could represent an important factor in gradual long-terms trends
Beyond Histones: Unveiling the Functional Roles of Protein Acetylation in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
Lysine acetylation plays a crucial role in cellular processes and is found across various evolutionary organisms. Recent advancements in proteomic techniques revealed the presence of acetylation in thousands of non-histone proteins. Here, we conducted extensive meta-analysis of 48 acetylomes spanning diverse organisms, including archaea, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, worms, plants, insects, crustacea, fish, and mammals. Our analyzes revealed a predominance of a single acetylation site in a protein detected in all studied organisms, and proteins heavily acetylated, with > 5–10 acetylated-sites, were represented by Hsp70, histone, or transcription GTP-biding domain. Moreover, using gene enrichment approaches we found that ATP metabolic processes, glycolysis, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase pathways and oxidative stress response are among the most acetylated cellular processes. Finally, to better explore the regulatory function of acetylation in glycolysis and oxidative stress we used aldolase and superoxide dismutase A (SODA) enzymes as model. For aldolase, we found that K147 acetylation, responsible to regulate human enzyme, conserved in all phylogenic clade, suggesting that this acetylation might play the same role in other species; while for SODA, we identified many lysine residues in different species present in the tunnel region, which was demonstrated for human and Trypanosoma cruzi, as negative regulator, also suggesting a conserved regulatory mechanism. In conclusion, this study provides insights into the conservation and functional significance of lysine acetylation in different organisms emphasizing its roles in cellular processes, metabolic pathways, and molecular regulation, shedding light in the extensive function of non-histone lysine acetylation

Feature detection and classification in buried pipes using LiDAR technology
Buried infrastructure presents unique challenges for autonomous robotic inspection due to its confined geometry and the structural variations within pipe networks. While CCTV is widely used for pipe inspection, LiDAR sensors offer complementary advantages, including precise ranging capabilities and accurate depth perception. In this work, we introduce a low-cost LiDAR-based system designed to detect blockages and accurately identify critical structural features - such as joints, manholes, and other discontinuities - within these environments in real-time. By combining robust data acquisition, efficient processing, and clear decision-making criteria, the approach enhances the effectiveness, reliability, and automation of underground inspections
Nutritional content and promotional practices of foods for infants and young children on the spanish market: a cross-sectional product evaluation
The first 1000 days of life are crucial for health, making it essential that foods for infants and young children (FIYC) meet high nutritional standards, as defined by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Nutrient and Promotion Profile Model (NPPM). There is high reliance on commercially available highly processed FIYC for children under 3 years of age, and a growing market. The aim of this study is to analyse the nutrient profiles of FIYC using the WHO NPPM and determine the proportion of products available in Spain suitable for promotion. Data on 830 FIYC available from brands sold by major retailers in Spain were collected. Product nutrient composition and label information were assessed using the WHO NPPM for the European Region. The processed fruit and vegetables were the most common FIYC category, accounting for 46% of the products surveyed. Overall, only 23% met all NPPM nutritional standards. About 60% of products had excessive sugar content, with 98% of fruit and vegetable purees qualifying for a front-of-pack sugar warning. One in four savoury meals was protein-deficient and one in four of all FIYC was energy-deficient. Only 7% and 2% exceeded the sodium and fat limits, respectively. No product fully met the NPPM promotion recommendations.
Conclusion: Nearly 80% of FIYC products in Spain do not meet WHO’s NPPM criteria for nutrient quality, with many high in sugar, low in protein and too watery (low energy). None met the promotional recommendations, highlighting the need for better regulation to improve the nutritional content and appropriate marketing of products for young children
Disaggregating Rebellion:Mid-level Commanders in Hierarchical Non-state Armed Organizations
Existing research demonstrates the central role of mid-level commanders as either spoilers or leaders of peace but treats this group as unitary, defined by its communication function in hierarchical non-state armed organizations. Drawing on life history interviews with ‘middle managers’ (mandos medios) of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP), this article explores heterogeneity of mid-level commanders. Individuals follow multiple trajectories into mid-level roles. The nature of their roles depends on their specific position and the needs of the organization. As a result, they develop diverse skills, status, and ties that differently position them for post-war influence, from leading to spoiling peace. These elements underlie a processual approach that focuses on these actors’ process of ‘becoming,’ boundaries of their position, and how their wartime roles fit in their post-war trajectories. A provisional typology drawing on this approach helps better understand mid-level commanders’ varied, and contradictory, post-war influence
Ethnographies of Paper in Early Modern England
In his lengthy poem ‘The praise of hemp-seed’, John Taylor (1578-1653) dwells on the manufacture of paper. This article argues that Taylor is concerned not only with paper’s origins as fabric and plant, but also with its etymological and global histories. Putting Taylor’s poem into conversation with travel narratives that described paper and other writing substances in sometimes excruciating detail, the article makes the case that Taylor invokes paper’s ancient histories and global traditions in order to efface them, claiming this remarkable substance as quintessentially British, or rather English
