    ReMoDeL: a pure functional object-oriented concept language for models, metamodels and model transformation

    Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is a broad discipline concerned with curating all aspects of system design using models. Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) is a highly publicised approach focusing on the generation of software systems from models. However, MDA consists of a large collection of complex, interlocking standards, which together are difficult to master and have only partial implementations. This motivated us to devise a much simpler language and toolset for MDE. The result is ReMoDeL (Reusable Model Design Language), a pure functional object-oriented language for describing concepts and relationships. ReMoDeL supports the creation of metamodels, models and model transformations. It leverages skills already known to programmers, such as inheritance and pure functional mapping. It integrates with any standard Java IDE and cross-compiles to Java, although ReMoDeL is more succinct (by 4x). ReMoDeL’s pure functional transformations are in principle amenable to formal proof by indu ction. Practically, it offers a convenient and fast way to prototype different metamodels and transformations. We are using ReMoDeL to develop alternatives to UML and MDA (with different models and abstraction levels), with promising results

    Bounding elastic photon-photon scattering at s≈1 MeV using a laser-plasma platform

    We report on a direct search for elastic photon-photon scattering using x-ray and γ photons from a laser-plasma based experiment. A γ photon beam produced by a laser wakefield accelerator provided a broadband γ spectrum extending to above [Figure presented]. These were collided with a dense x-ray field produced by the emission from a laser heated germanium foil at [Figure presented], corresponding to an invariant mass of [Figure presented]. In these asymmetric collisions elastic scattering removes one x-ray and one high-energy γ photon and outputs two lower energy γ photons. No changes in the γ photon spectrum were observed as a result of the collisions allowing us to place a 95% upper bound on the cross section of [Figure presented]. Although far from the QED prediction, this represents the lowest upper limit obtained so far for [Figure presented]

    An evaluation of pre-registration research teaching provision for operating department practice students

    Background: Understanding and engaging in and with research is a professional obligation of both student and registered operating department practitioners. This study was designed to explore how research is embedded into operating department practice undergraduate pre-registration curriculum. Method: Data collection took place via a questionnaire sent to programme leaders at Higher Education Institutions who deliver Health and Care Professions Council–validated operating department practice programmes. Overall, 30 higher education institutions were invited to participate, with 14 higher education institutions completing the questionnaire. The data were thematically analysed. Findings: It was identified that some aspects of research are embedded throughout operating department practice programmes, with a broad focus on research methodologies, methods and ethical considerations. The evidence supports the hypothesis that operating department practitioner students are undertaking primary and secondary research. However, there is limited evidence of dissemination. This work has identified the perceived barriers and challenges to embedding research in undergraduate programmes and the limited use of enrichment activities. This has led the authors to identify some areas worthy of further exploration and recommendations for the future

    Measuring Variation in Gaze Following Across Communities, Ages, and Individuals:A Showcase of TANGO-CC (Task for Assessing iNdividual differences in Gaze understanding-Open-Cross-Cultural)

    Cross-cultural studies are crucial for investigating the cultural variability and universality of cognitive developmental processes. However, cross-cultural assessment tools in cognition across languages and communities are limited. In this article, we describe a gaze-following task designed to measure basic social cognition across individuals, ages, and communities (the Task for Assessing iNdividual differences in Gaze understanding-Open-Cross-Cultural; TANGO-CC). The task was developed and psychometrically assessed in one cultural setting and, with input of local collaborators, adapted for cross-cultural data collection. Minimal language demands and the web-app implementation allow fast and easy contextual adaptations to each community. TANGO-CC captures individual- and community-level variation and shows good internal consistency in a data set of 2.5- to 11-year-old children from 17 diverse communities. Within-communities variation outweighed between-communities variation. We provide an open-source website for researchers to customize and use the task (https://ccp-odc.eva.mpg.de/tango-cc). TANGO-CC can be used to assess basic social cognition in diverse communities and provides a roadmap for researching community-level and individual-level differences across cultures

    Vitrification as a key solution for immobilisation within nuclear waste management

    Vitreous materials in the form of both relatively homogeneous glasses and composite glass crystalline materials (GCM) incorporating disperse crystalline phases are currently the most reliable wasteforms effectively used on industrial scale for nuclear waste immobilisation. Glasses are stable solid-state materials with a topologically disordered atomic structure in the form of solid solutions, i.e. solutions frozen via vitrification to a solid state without forming regular crystalline phases. Nuclear waste vitrification is attractive because of technological and compositional flexibility enabling hazardous elements to be safely immobilised and providing a glassy material characterised by high corrosion resistance, mechanical and radiation durability, as well as effectively reducing the volume of the resulting wasteform

    On a journey to citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS)? A political economy analysis of container-based sanitation (CBS) in the fragmented (in)formal city

    Rapidly growing cities face the chronic challenge of access to safe, dignified and accessible sanitation, in contexts of inequality and informality. Technological and operational innovations, such as container-based sanitation (CBS), are promoted as relatively low-cost market-based circular economy off-grid solutions to deliver citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS). However, in the absence of evidence that CBS is delivering on these promises, this paper asks: under what conditions can CBS services contribute to achieving CWIS goals? It applies a combined political economy and socio-technical regime analysis to examine multi-level governance in the sanitation sector and CBS service regimes in Cape Town, Lima, Nairobi and Cap-Haitien. Only Cape Town, a municipality-controlled system, demonstrates the necessary public authority that enables CBS to operate at scale. Yet, it is regarded by many residents in informal settlements as poor sanitation for poor people. This suggests that scaling CBS requires sustained public investment and strong coordinating authority
