A crisis-induced bricolage policy in Australia: ethical contradictions in policymaking in times of crisis
Building on Oliver’s (2020) concept of governmentality-effected neglect and applying an ethical lens, this paper examines how ideas and discourse shape migration and social policy during crises, particularly the role of state assumptions in fostering ethical contradictions in policy. We analyse secondary material and original qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with macro-level policymakers, meso-level civil societal actors and individuals at the micro-level directly affected by policy decisions. We argue that the pandemic led to a crisis-induced bricolage of policy, reflecting an ethical void. This approach, rooted in long-standing ideas about the value and role of temporary migrants in Australia, continues to influence policymaking, perpetuating systemic exclusions and reinforcing ethical challenges

New directions when designing for play
In this concluding paper to the theme edition of Children, Youth and Environments on Contemporary Issues in Designing for Play, we explain how the six papers and four field reports that comprise this collection have collectively strengthened the evidence base and expanded the discourse about designing for play across diverse cultural, spatial and disciplinary contexts. Together, they demonstrate that designing for play is both a collective and ethical process that must respond to local needs as well as global challenges. We also move beyond our evidence base to outline the challenges that lie ahead in designing for play, specifying priority actions that are empirical, conceptual and political. These include embracing intergenerational perspectives, addressing inequalities, pushing boundaries and committing to iterative practices. Through this collection, we argue that designing for play is a deeply relational and systemic endeavor, key to promoting children's rights, wellbeing and resilience
Hamaguchi Ryūsuke's Evil Does Not Exist as degrowth parable
Reading Hamaguchi Ryūsuke's Evil Does Not Exist (Aku wa sonzai shinai, 2023) as a degrowth parable that uses a simple story to illustrate moral and ethical problems, this article analyzes how film parables can explore complex ideological, ecological, and social issues such as those addressed by degrowth discourses with a greater degree of nuance than is possible in the manifesto format or activist provocation. This article proposes understanding Evil Does Not Exist as a visual mode of the “speculative fabulation” that scholars of the Anthropocene have called for. Cinema can offer a mode of audiovisual exploration of contemporary moral problems such as the alienation of humans from our natural environment in the Anthropocene, using the parable form to generate polyvalent meanings that sometimes counteract themselves or act in opposition to one another. Developing a mode of film analysis that the article calls parable as method, the article places a close reading of Hamaguchi's film alongside a short account of popular contemporary discourses on ecological issues in Japan today led by philosopher Saitō Kōhei, in order to evoke a more generative understanding of the film and its ideas through comparison
On the Quality of Relational Justice
By emphasising the role of concepts like social status, power and respect, all relational egalitarians seek to demonstrate that there is more to the political concept of equality than the distribution of goods. While there is a broad consensus on the nature of equality, however, the nature of justice is a matter of internal dispute. The aim of this paper is to disentangle these argumentative threads, building on work in early relational egalitarian scholarship to develop a relational approach to justice, both distinct from the distributive approach to justice and isolated from the relational approach to equality. In doing so, I reveal possible and sometimes surprising alliances between relational egalitarians and other scholars on the nature of justice
Persistent 2024 warm‐season marine heatwave in the Kuroshio extension region under global warming
In 2024, the Kuroshio Extension (KE) region experienced a prolonged marine heatwave (MHW), intensifying during the warm season and peaking in mid-August. Mixed-layer heat budget analysis reveals that the onset was primarily driven by anticyclonic eddies associated with a northward-shifted KE axis and enhanced shortwave radiation due to atmospheric blocking. This was further amplified by an eastward-propagating Eurasian teleconnection wave train triggered by North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. The decay phase was dominated by eddy activity and wind–evaporation–SST feedback. Attribution analysis shows that such an event would have been unlikely without anthropogenic forcing, with approximately 35% of its magnitude attributed to atmospheric circulation, and the remaining 65% to thermodynamic warming and oceanic internal dynamics. These results highlight the increasing likelihood of persistent MHWs in dynamic western boundary current regions under climate change, emphasizing the need for enhanced predictive tools and targeted adaptation efforts.
Plain Language Summary
Marine heatwaves (MHWs), defined as prolonged periods of anomalously warm sea surface temperatures (SST), are increasing in frequency and intensity under climate change. This study examines a persistent MHW that occurred in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) region during the 2024 warm season, maintaining strong intensity over an extended duration. During the onset phase, a northward-displaced KE axis generated anticyclonic eddies that transported warm subtropical waters northeastward. Concurrently, reduced cloud cover induced by an atmospheric blocking enhanced shortwave radiation, intensifying surface warming. This was further linked to an eastward-propagating Eurasian Rossby wave train triggered by North Atlantic SST anomalies. In the decay phase, anomalous westerly winds enhanced latent heat loss and suppressed warming through wind–evaporation–SST feedback. Attribution analysis indicates that approximately 35% of the event's intensity can be attributable to atmospheric circulation anomalies, while the remaining 65% is linked to anthropogenic warming and oceanic internal dynamics. These results highlight the combined roles of oceanic and atmospheric processes in driving MHWs in western boundary current regions. Improved understanding of these mechanisms is essential for enhancing prediction capabilities and informing early warning and adaptation strategies under continued climate change
Exploring the mutational spectrum of key kinase genes PIK3CA, BRAF, EGFR, ALK and ROS1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma
Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is the sixth most aggressive type of oral cancer. Mutations in cancer-driving
genes such as protein kinase are well known in cancer progression. We selected candidate genes (PIK3CA, BRAF,
EGFR, ALK, and ROS1) for mutations exploration in the OSCC patients belonging to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
through Next Generation-Whole Exome Sequencing (NG-WES) using Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE)
tissue blocks (27 tumor and 7 paired normal) for the 1st time followed by in-silico characterization. A total of 33
mutations were identified which constituted 28/33 (84.84%) SNVs, 4/33 (12.12%) frameshift deletions and 1/33
(3.03%) stop-gain mutation. While, of the 33 mutations, 12.6% (4/33) were novel and had not been previously
reported in public mutation databases such as COSMIC or dbSNP. Among the total somatic mutations (24/33;\ud
72.72%), 08/33 mutations were observed in multiple patients. Mutations of the ALK i.e. ALKp.I1461V, ALKp.K1491R
and ALKp.D1529E were found in 27/27, 21/27 and 20/27 tumor samples and hence can have potential biomarker
applications. ISPRED-SEQ identified 07/33 interaction site mutations i.e. EGFRp.R521K, EGFRp.R831C, ROS1p.S2229C,
ROS1p.E1902K, ROS1p.K2228Q, ROS1p.D2213N, and ROS1p.P221S. SAAFEQ-SEQ predictions revealed that (28/29; 96.5%) SNVs
destabilize protein except for ROS1p.D2213N. ConSurf predictions indicated 17.3% (5/33) mutations (e.g., ROS1p.N2240K
(score 9) and ROS1p.L567V (score 8), as highly conserved, likely disrupting kinase function and stability, unlike variable
mutations with milder effects. MD simulations for interacting sites (IS) SNVs revealed structural deviations, with
mutant proteins revealing larger gyration radius and fluctuations in root mean square deviation (RMSD) studies
indicating a disrupted folding behavior. To conclude, we identified potential mutations on ROS1 that can have
potential biomarker applications, however, we recommend studies in large Pakhtun cohorts in KP, Pakistan
XR Stories as innovation and cultural intermediary for the creative industries
This paper extends scholarship on innovation intermediation within the creative industries, through case study analysis of XR Stories. XR Stories is a Yorkshire and the Humber based Creative Industries Cluster Partnerships (CICP) programme, focused on providing access to expertise, infrastructure and facilities to creatives working in extended reality. Through its exploration of the different ways in which R&D was facilitated, the paper positions XR Stories as an important cultural and innovation intermediary in delivering the aims of the CICP. It does this through demonstrating the varied examples of cultural and innovation intermediation which XR Stories undertook. The paper also draws upon Foucault’s notion of the dispositif, adopting the term ‘CICP dispositif’ to acknowledge the wider context of R&D intermediation within which XR Stories operated. It explores how XR Stories’s intermediation work was shaped by the CICP dispositif, including how it is constrained by CICP aims, but also actively developed new forms of activities outside of the CICP limitations
The role of personal relationships within physical activity interventions for adults with long-term health conditions: a qualitative systematic review
Background: Increasingly, healthcare provision in the UK has started to take account of the role of social relationships in affecting health behaviours and wellbeing.
Objective: To synthesize the literature on the types and roles of personal relationships for adults with long-term health conditions involved in physical activity interventions.
Methods: We searched eight databases from 1990 to March 2025 for mixed methods and qualitative studies of physical activity interventions in adults with a range of long-term health conditions. Interventions lasted ≥6 weeks and explored the influence of personal relationships on physical activity.
Results: Sixty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. Relationships identified included: interventionist; peers on the intervention; family members, friends, healthcare professionals, community, researchers, pets and a lack of social interaction.
Discussion: The results of this study highlight the importance of different types of social relationships and interactions for participants, illustrating the value of understanding the social context of physical activity interventions
