    Ethical Issues in Family Business: Toward a Deeper Understanding and a New Research Agenda

Although research in this area has grown rapidly in recent years, it remains fragmented and underdeveloped. Advancing the field requires a more integrated approach that consolidates existing concepts and dimensions. This paper synthesizes current knowledge and proposes an integrative framework for studying ethical issues in family firms that encompasses ethical determinants, processes, and outcomes.     Identifying Suitability for Data Reduction in Imbalanced Time-Series Datasets

    Data Availability Statement: The open-source dataset used in this study may be found here: https://springernature.figshare.com/collections/A_High-Fidelity_Residential_Building_Occupancy_Detection_Dataset/5364449 (accessed on 16 April 2024).Occupancy detection for large buildings enables optimised control of indoor systems based on occupant presence, reducing the energy costs of heating and cooling. Through machine learning models, occupancy detection is achieved with an accuracy of over 95%. However, to achieve this, large amounts of data are collected with little consideration of which of the collected data are most useful to the task. This paper demonstrates methods to identify if data may be removed from the imbalanced time-series training datasets to optimise the training process and model performance. It also describes how the calculation of the class density of a dataset may be used to identify if a dataset is applicable for data reduction, and how dataset fusion may be used to combine occupancy datasets. The results show that over 50% of a training dataset may be removed from imbalanced datasets while maintaining performance, reducing training time and energy cost by over 40%. This indicates that a data-centric approach to developing artificial intelligence applications is as important as selecting the best model.This research was funded by InnovateUK, project number 10097909

The argument underpinning this essay is relatively simple, although to the best of our knowledge it has not been previously formulated as such in the literature on Lacanian psychoanalysis, neither in its features and contours, nor in its repercussions. When, during the Summer of 1953, Lacan set himself to work on the lengthy theoretical position paper that was to have served as the focal point of discussion for the 16th Conférence des psychanalystes de langues romanes, the acrimonious split that had divided the French psychoanalytic community during the month of June prompted him to recover the foundational principles of psychoanalysis by radically transforming the way in which Freud’s brainchild had developed following his death. In 1953, Lacan thus took advantage of an institutional crisis to change the face of contemporary psychoanalysis, with the purpose of retrieving and reinstating its true value. We shall never know what Lacan would have written if he had done so as a member of the Société psychanalytique de Paris rather than the newly established Société française de psychanalyse, yet the content of his text is most likely to have been substantially different, if only because he would not have experienced the same urge to expose his colleagues’ numerous misconceptions of psychoanalytic theory and practice, even less the need to outline a completely new programme for psychoanalysis. As Lacan himself put it in the opening paragraph of his report: “The discourse that the reader will find here warrants an introduction that provides some context. Because it bears its mark.”..

    Solution Stability and Well-Posedness for Classes of Parametric Set Optimization Problems

    Mathematics Subject Classification: 49J53; 49K40; 90C31.This paper investigates the solution stability and well-posedness for a parametric set optimization problem (PSOP), where lower and upper set order relations are induced by an improvement set. We provide new sufficient conditions for the outer-continuity, outer-openness and inner-openness of the solution mapping of (PSOP). By utilizing the property of cone-continuity, we derive sufficient conditions ensuring the Levitin-Polyak well-posedness for (PSOP) and the Hadamard well-posedness for a related parametric implicit set optimization problem (ISOP). However, the specific mechanisms by which different KRAS G12 alleles initiate distinctive patterns of metabolic reprogramming are unclear. Using isogenic panels of colorectal cell lines harbouring the G12A, G12C, G12D and G12V heterozygous mutations and employing transcriptomics, metabolomics, and extensive biochemical validation, we characterise distinctive features of each allele. We demonstrate that cells harbouring the common G12D and G12V oncogenic mutations significantly alter glutamine metabolism and nitrogen recycling through FOXO1-mediated regulation compared to parental lines. Moreover, with a combination of small molecule inhibitors targeting glutamine and glutamate metabolism, we also identify a common vulnerability that eliminates mutant cells selectively.     More Than Code: Technical and Emotional Dynamics in Solidity’s Development

    Background: Solidity is the primary programming language used for developing smart contracts on Ethereum, representing a new generation of programming languages developed entirely in open environments. Objective: This longitudinal case study examines contribution patterns and emotional dynamics within the Solidity GitHub repository over a ten-year period (2014-2024). Method: We developed a contribution index combining metrics from developer activities (commits, pull requests, comments, and temporal engagement) and applied emotion detection to study communication patterns in a decade-long dataset of developer interactions. Results: The top 1 % of contributors are responsible for around 85 % of project contributions, yet the project exhibits dual paths to prominence: early contributors established technical foundations through code, while later contributors achieved influence through reviews and discussions. Emotional patterns show transitions from initial curiosity and confusion to eventual approval and gratitude. Conclusion: The project's recognition of diverse contribution types and evolving emotional dynamics enables sustainable growth despite concentrated contributions, demonstrating how open-source languages can evolve while maintaining both technical rigor and community engagement

    ‘They don’t care about you, me or anyone else’: populist storytelling in anti-lockdown protests

    This paper contributes to the study of populism and populist social movements by emphasising the centrality of Manichaeism and conspiracy theories for populism. It reveals how these elements emerge organically from within the populist storytelling of a new wave of populist mobilisation, anti-lockdown protests, alongside identifying key narratives that collectively increase the ‘tellability’ of populist stories. Based on go-along interviews and participant observation during anti-lockdown protests in three cities of the UK, we identified four key narratives informing populist storytelling in the protests: Protesters believed that they are the (1) truth-tellers, who wake the people up to the truth that the pandemic is the result of a plot, as well as the (2) heroes, who oppose the villain-elites enacting the plot – a societal (3) crisis – through the imposition of lockdowns and restrictions. While engaged in a moral struggle, the protesters were motivated by (4) the promise of averting the crisis and returning to normality. Our findings further our understanding of how joint grievances surrounding a threatening pandemic coalesced into a coherent populist narrative expressed by a protest movement.This work was supported by Political Studies Association and The British Academy [CRUSA210009]

    Influence of ammonia-contaminated fly ash from selective catalytic reduction process on the properties of Portland-fly ash blended cement and geopolymer composites

    Data availability: Data will be made available on request.Fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants, finds valuable application in the cement and concrete industry due to its pozzolanic properties. Environmental concerns necessitate the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions; however, this process introduces residual ammonia onto the fly ash, known as SCR-fly ash, which may affect its properties. This study investigates the characteristics and suitability of SCR-fly ash as a supplementary cementitious material in Portland cement and geopolymer cement composites, compared to conventional high-calcium fly ash. The results show that Portland-fly ash blended cement mixtures containing 20% SCR-fly ash achieve comparable engineering properties to those with high-calcium fly ash, with a slight reduction in compressive strength of ~3.4% at 28 days. Geopolymers with SCR-fly ash exhibit a significantly lower (~52.8%) compressive strength than that of high-calcium fly ash 28 days. However, SCR-fly ash requires a resting period of at least 20 days to reduce ammonia content before use. The larger particle size and presence of residual ammonia can react to form detrimental gypsum or ammonium salts that lead to reduced strength. Therefore, SCR-fly ash may need to be chemically treated to be suitable as a geopolymer precursor. Overall, this work provides crucial insights into the potential utilization of SCR-fly ash in the cement and concrete industry, promoting resource recovery and environmental sustainability.This research work was supported by Fundamental Fund 2025, Chiang Mai University.     Does humor in popular science magazine articles increase information retention and receptiveness in science education?

This study aimed to test if humor inserts in two popular science articles increased the retention of information and receptiveness to science among Portuguese undergraduate students. These articles and positive, non-aggressive humor inserts were created by the first author of the current article who has previous practical experience with science-related comedy. A sample of 226 students was randomly divided in two groups, with half reading humorous versions of the two articles and the other half reading control versions without humor. Retention of information and receptiveness were assessed through questionnaires, and comparisons were done using statistical tests. Results of the research showed that the increase in retention of information and interest with humor inserts in popular articles directed at science education was not statistically significant, thus suggesting little advantage in its use. The findings are discussed about the use of humor in popular science articles and the potential distracting qualities of humor in science communication and education.This work was supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, (grant number SFRH/BPD/48272/2008)
