    New Structures in the J/ψJ/ψ Mass Spectrum in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s = 13 TeV

OSTI ID: 1988522 Report Number(s): CMS-BPH-21-003; CERN-EP-2023-109; FERMILAB-PUB-23-315-CMS; arXiv:2306.07164; oai:inspirehep.net:2668013A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the Formula Presented invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 135 fb−1. Three structures are found, and a model with quantum interference among these structures provides a good description of the data. A new structure is observed with a local significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of 6638 +43−38(stat)+16−31(syst) MeV. Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of 6847 +44−28(stat)+48−20(syst) MeV,, which is consistent with the X (6900) resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.7 standard deviations, is found at a mass of 7134 +48−25(stat)+41−15(syst) MeV.. Results are also reported for a model without interference, which does not fit the data as well and shows mass shifts up to 150 MeV relative to the model with interference.SCOAP3

    Impact of Short-Term Computerized Cognitive Training on Cognition in Older Adults With and Without Genetic Risk of Alzheimer's Disease: Outcomes From the START Randomized Controlled Trial

Design: Two-arm randomized controlled trial of the START program. Setting and Participants: Remote online trial in adults older than 50 taking part from home. Methods: The trial compared the START program with placebo in 6544 people older than 50. Primary outcome was executive function measured through Trailmaking B, with other secondary cognitive measures. Genetic risk profile and ApoE4 status were determined by Illumina Array. Results: START conferred benefit to executive function, attention, memory, and a composite measure, including in people with the ApoE4 genotype. Solution method: Creating a Python-based code that utilises the transient-time correlation function method and the LAMMPS software to enable the bulk fluid properties (e.g. viscosity) and confined fluid interfacial properties (e.g. shear stress and slip velocity) to be computed at low shear rates with NEMD.Data availability: All data used in this work are freely reproducible using the program provided. The source files are also available at the link https://github.com/edwardsmith999/TTCF4LAMMPS.We present TTCF4LAMMPS, a toolkit for performing non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations to study the fluid behaviour at low shear rates using the LAMMPS software. By combining direct NEMD simulations and the transient-time correlation function (TTCF) technique, we study the fluid response to shear rates spanning 15 orders of magnitude. We present two examples for simple monatomic systems: one consisting of a bulk liquid and another with a liquid layer confined between two solid walls. The small bulk system is suitable for testing on personal computers, while the larger confined system requires high-performance computing (HPC) resources. We demonstrate that the TTCF formalism can successfully detect the system response for arbitrarily weak external fields. We provide a brief mathematical explanation for this feature. Although we showcase the method for simple monatomic systems, TTCF can be readily extended to study more complex molecular fluids. Moreover, in addition to shear flows, the method can be extended to investigate elongational or mixed flows as well as thermal or electric fields. The high computational cost needed for the method is offset by the two following benefits: i) the cost is independent of the magnitude of the external field, and ii) the simulations can be made highly efficient on HPC architectures by exploiting the parallel design of the algorithm.     Spectroscopic and Microscopic Characterization of Microbial Biofouling on Aircraft Fuel Tanks

    Full text also available at: Europe PMC - https://europepmc.org/article/MED/38319653Avoiding microbial contamination and biofilm formation on the surfaces of aircraft fuel tanks is a major challenge in the aviation industry. The inevitable presence of water in fuel systems and nutrients provided by the fuel makes an ideal environment for bacteria, fungi, and yeast to grow. Understanding how microbes grow on different fuel tank materials is the first step to control biofilm formation in aviation fuel systems. In this study, biofilms of Pseudomonas putida, a model Gram-negative bacterium previously found in aircraft fuel tanks, were characterized on aluminum 7075-T6 surfaces, which is an alloy used by the aviation industry due to favorable properties including high strength and fatigue resistance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) showed that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by P. putida were important components of biofilms with a likely role in biofilm stability and adhesion to the surfaces. EDX analysis showed that the proportion of phosphorus with respect to nitrogen is higher in the EPS than in the bacterial cells. Additionally, different morphologies in biofilm formation were observed in the fuel phase compared to the water phase. Micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) analysis suggested that phosphoryl and carboxyl functional groups are fundamental for the irreversible attachment between the EPS of bacteria and the aluminum surface, by the formation of hydrogen bonds and inner-sphere complexes between the macromolecules and the aluminum surface. Based on the hypothesis that nucleic acids (particularly DNA) are an important component of EPS in P. putida biofilms, the impact of degrading extracellular DNA was tested. Report number: CMS-HIN-21-004, CERN-EP-2023-085.The production of prompt Λ+c baryons is measured via the exclusive decay channel Λ+c → pK−π+ at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, using proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (PbPb) collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The pp and PbPb data were obtained in 2017 and 2018 with integrated luminosities of 252 and 0.607 nb−1, respectively. The measurements are performed within the Λ+c rapidity interval |y| 10 GeV/c are strongly suppressed in PbPb collisions. The level of suppression depends significantly on the collision centrality. The Λ+c / D0 production ratio is similar in PbPb and pp collisions at pT > 10 GeV/c, suggesting that the coalescence process does not play a dominant role in prompt Λ+c baryon production at higher pT.SCOAP3

    Ultra-Wideband High-Efficiency Dual-Polarized Conformal Phase Array for Wireless Power Transfer

    In this letter, a novel methodology to remove the common-mode resonance of tightly coupled arrays using two-set unit cell and conformal operation is presented, whereby the ultra-wideband dual-polarized conformal phase array is developed with high efficiency for wireless power transfer applications. Initially, a design method to shift the common-mode resonance of a tightly coupled array outside of the operating band using two-set unit cell and conformal operation is described, and a dual-polarized two-set unit cell of infinite array is proposed with ultra-wideband operation. Subsequently, the 8 × 8 dual-polarized two-set unit cells are designed to conform a cylindrical surface with a radius of 200 mm (1.3λ), resulting in a cylindrical-conformal tightly coupled array. Ultimately, an experimental prototype of the obtained conformal array was manufactured and measured. It achieves an operated bandwidth of 2.2∼12.4 GHz (5.6:1) with active VSWRs 70% for dual-polarized operation. The good correspondence between the measured results and the simulated results illustrates the feasibility of the presented conformal array. Such a balanced high-performance conformal phase array provides a perfect solution for wireless power transfer systems of various maneuverable platforms.National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Number: 62201417); 111 Project of China

    The impact of self-construal on consumers’ intention to write reviews: A trait activation perspective

    Identifying which consumers are more likely to write reviews and when they are more likely to do so is of paramount importance for marketing management. Applying trait activation theory, this research explores how brand strength and consumption experience affect the intention of consumers with varying self-construals to write reviews. The findings suggest that, in general, consumers with an independent self-construal are less inclined to write reviews compared to those with an interdependent self-construal generally. However, for weak brands, consumers with an interdependent self-construal are less inclined to write reviews compared to those with an independent self-construal, irrespective of whether they have a positive or negative experience. When dealing with strong brands, consumers with an independent self-construal are more likely to generate reviews following a negative experience rather than a positive one.     Symbolic knowledge innovation through bricolage in the periphery: the Bauhaus movement

While symbolic knowledge innovation drives growth, its role in creating new paths in the periphery is largely under-investigated. New path creation has been largely envisaged through macro (e.g., policy) or meso (e.g., industrial R&D) aggregates, overlooking micro-level actors (e.g., individuals), and their agency in mobilizing heterogeneous resources vital for innovation. Viewed in this light, we investigate how the interaction of actors at different levels (macro, meso, and micro) shapes symbolic knowledge innovation in the periphery. We draw on the case of Bauhaus movement to investigate symbolic knowledge innovation in the peripheries of Weimar and Dessau. Our findings illustrate symbolic knowledge innovation at the Bauhaus in terms of three phases, namely, semiotic codes: Bauhaus idea generation and articulation; material basis: development of Bauhaus artefacts; and material basis: Bauhaus commercial success. We further unpack actors’ agency and show how each phase of symbolic knowledge innovation emerges through bricolage. We contribute to the economic geography literature by showing the role of bricolage and actors’ agency in symbolic knowledge innovation for new path creation in the periphery

    Flight Stream Effects on Installed Jet Noise with Wing-Flap and Fuselage

    Reduction of jet noise through use of higher bypass ratios has significantly reduced isolated jet noise and installation effects generally, have become of higher relative importance. Two flight stream velocities for an installed jet engine including pylon and a wing with deployed flap, connected to a fuselage are contrasted. The successful framework developed previously is extended to this challenging configuration. Key flow and noise data are validated against measurements in a blind test. A significant decrease in turbulence kinetic energy levels below the wing and within the shear layer downstream of the flap is found with associated decrease in noise.
