    Collaborative Development of a Distributed Lunar Mission Simulation: A Multi-Team Demonstration within Simulation Exploration Experience (SEE 2025)

    The Simulation Exploration Experience (SEE) is an international industry–academic initiative that promotes the use of distributed simulation for space exploration. Each year, multiple university teams participate by developing simulations based on lunar mission scenarios. In SEE 2025, Brunel University of London collaborated with three other institutions to create a real-time, distributed simulation of a conceptual lunar mission. Using High-Level Architecture (HLA) standards and NASA’s Distributed Observer Network (DON), five federates were developed to simulate a landing procedure, astronaut transport between facilities, inter-federate communications, and a laboratory tour. This abstract outlines the collaborative development effort, the roles of the participating universities, and the interoperable interactions between their systems

    Ultrasonic cavitation shock wave exfoliation dynamics of 2D materials revealed in situ by MHz XFEL imaging and multiphysics modeling

Data recorded for the experiment at the European XFEL are available at DOI: 10.22003/XFEL.EU-DATA-003100-00.Supplementary Materials are available online at: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.ady9558#supplementary-materials .Using megahertz x-ray free electron laser imaging with x-ray pulses of ~25 femtoseconds and a machine-learning strategy, we have conducted comprehensive in situ imaging studies on the dynamics of cavitation bubble clouds in ultrasound fields at the SPB/SFX beamline of the European XFEL. The research unambiguously revealed the quasi-simultaneous implosion of multiple bubbles and simultaneous collapse of bubble cloud in nanosecond scale and their dynamic impacts onto two-dimensional (2D) materials for layer exfoliation. We have also performed multiphysics modeling to simulate the shock wave emission, propagation, impact, and stresses produced. We elucidated the critical conditions for producing instant or fatigue exfoliation and the effects of bonding strengths and structural defects on the exfoliation rate.     Judicial review of competition law decisions: an empirical study of the Lithuanian context

All comments and observations expressed in this paper are the author’s.JEL Classifications: K21, K23.Commemorating the 20th anniversary since joining the European Union (EU) (together with an obligation to enforce EU competition law), this study evaluates national judgments reviewing the Lithuanian National Competition Council’s [known as Konkurencijos Taryba (KT)] decisions during the 2004–24 period. Building on comprehensive empirical research on judicial review of the KT’s decisions, which involved employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, this article aims to capture the main trends and patterns of judicial review in the Lithuanian context, with some comparison to other small European countries. The study covers the KT’s decisions in relation to the application of Articles 101 and 102 TFEU (and domestic equivalents), pertaining not only to infringement decisions but also to settlements, commitments, as well as decisions not to launch an investigation or discontinue an investigation. The findings reveal a predominant focus on the national provisions, with only 27 per cent of appealed cases embracing the EU element. As far as the outcomes are concerned, this article notes that the administrative courts mostly confirmed the competition authority’s decisions, with any interventions being calibrated in a manner to avoid any encroachment upon the authority’s discretion, clearly upholding the concept of judicial deference

    Differential Impact of Risk Factors for Cognitive Decline in Heterosexual and Sexual Minority Older Adults in England

    Data Availability Statement: The data used in the study were obtained from the UK Data Service archive upon registration and can be found on the UK Data Service repository (https://ukdataservice.ac.uk/).Background/Objectives: Sexual minority older adults (SMOAs) report greater subjective cognitive decline (SCD) than heterosexual older adults (HOAs). This study aimed to compare the impact of multiple psycho-social risk factors on objective and subjective cognitive decline in HOAs and SMOAs. Methods: Two samples of self-identified HOAs and SMOAs were selected from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Reliable change indices for episodic and semantic memory were created to assess cognitive decline. SCD was self-reported for memory and general cognition. Depressive symptoms, loneliness, marital status and socio-economic status were investigated as risk factors. Results: No between-group differences were found in cognitive decline. Higher depression was associated with greater SCD risk and worse semantic memory decline. The latter effect was stronger in SMOAs. The findings were largely replicated in the sensitivity analysis. Conclusions: Poor mental health may represent the strongest driver of cognitive decline in SMOAs and to a greater extent than in HOAs.This work was supported by an Alzheimer’s Association Grant (AARF-22-919481) to RM. Éduquer au temps de l’AnthropocèneSince Western-style education was introduced to Africa in the 19th century, it has played a central role in producing the Anthropocene, shaping the attributes and aspirations of young people, and facilitating their incorporation into the global bioeconomy. In rural areas of the contemporary Global South, however, many young people find themselves surplus to the needs of today’s global economy, but also alienated from rural life – both by schooling and by an increasingly hostile climate. In this paper, we describe the outcomes of an intervention in which 34 student teachers conducted action research in rural Lesotho schools, seeking to make education more meaningful to rural learners. While the student teachers found ways to engage learners in the curriculum, their interventions tended to reinforce the conventional role of schooling, rather than offering a more transformative pathway.Depuis qu’elle a été introduite en Afrique au xixe siècle, l’éducation de type occidental a joué un rôle fondamental dans l’avènement de l’Anthropocène, façonnant les caractères et les aspirations des jeunes et facilitant leur incorporation dans la bioéconomie mondiale. Dans les zones rurales du Sud global, cependant, un grand nombre de jeunes se trouvent actuellement en situation de ne représenter qu’un surplus inutile par rapport aux besoins de l’économie mondiale contemporaine, mais également aliénés de la vie rurale du fait de l’enseignement scolaire et de conditions climatiques de plus en plus hostiles. Dans cet article, nous décrivons les résultats d’une intervention au cours de laquelle 34 étudiants-enseignants ont mené une recherche-action dans des écoles rurales au Lesotho, cherchant à accroître le sens de l’enseignement pour les apprenants ruraux.     The Banalization of Sexual Harassment That Produces Silencing in the Brazilian Academic Context of Management

    Data Availability Statement: The authors have nothing to report.Sexual harassment remains a persistent and structural form of gendered violence in academic institutions. In this article, we investigate how its banalization operates as both a consequence and a mechanism of silencing in the Brazilian field of academic management. Drawing on six in-depth interviews with women scholars and students, we employ coding-based narrative analysis to explore how harassment is normalized, dismissed, and rendered invisible. We argue that banalization and silencing constitute a self-reinforcing dynamic sustained by coloniality, which functions as an ontological structure. This triad: coloniality, banalization, and silencing, helps to explain how sexual harassment is normalized and rendered invisible within academic institutions. Our contribution includes a conceptual model that identifies four structural axes—symbolic-cultural normalization, epistemological ambiguity, psychological internalization, and legal-institutional voids—which mediate the trivialization of harassment. This paper calls for a shift from individualized understandings of violence to collective accountability and structural transformation, particularly in institutions historically shaped by colonial gendered norms.CAPES, FAPES

    5G-based SharkNet protocol adaptation and wireless communication links

    Data availability: Data are provided in the manuscript.5G communication technology has become well established in daily life, but its use in industrial control remains in its early stages of development. Due to its low latency and high reliability, 5G URLLC holds substantial potential for development in industrial control. Meanwhile, although SharkNet offers high transmission speed and reliability, its dependence on wired connections limits its coverage and flexibility.To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel wireless communication link adaptation scheme that integrates 5G URLLC and SharkNet. We first conduct an in-depth analysis of the data packet formats and communication timing characteristics of both SharkNet and 5G protocols. Based on this analysis, we design a protocol conversion scheme and prototype a wireless link system. To validate the adaptability and performance of this scheme, we conducted a number of experiments to evaluate its reliability and latency. The experimental results indicate that compared with a transparent transmission approach, the proposed adaptation scheme significantly reduces communication latency and enhances reliability.Postgraduate Innovation Project of Shanxi Province,2023SJ21

    Leveraging BiLSTM-GAT for enhanced stock market prediction: a dual-graph approach to portfolio optimization

    Data Availability: The data used in this research were obtained from a publicly available dataset from Yahoo Finance.Stock price prediction remains a critical challenge in financial research due to its potential to inform strategic decision-making. Existing approaches predominantly focus on two key tasks: (1) regression, which forecasts future stock prices, and (2) classification, which identifies trading signals such as buy, sell, or hold. However, the inherent limitations of financial data hinder effective model training, often leading to suboptimal performance. To mitigate this issue, prior studies have expanded datasets by aggregating historical data from multiple companies. This strategy, however, fails to account for the unique characteristics and interdependencies among individual stocks, thereby reducing predictive accuracy. To address these limitations, we propose a novel BiLSTM-GAT-AM model that integrates bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks with graph attention networks (GAT) and an attention mechanism (AM). Unlike conventional graph-based models that define edges based solely on technical or fundamental relationships, our approach employs a dual-graph structure: one graph captures technical similarities, while the other encodes fundamental industry relationships. These two representations are aligned through an attention mechanism, enabling the model to exploit both technical and fundamental insights for enhanced stock market predictions. We conduct extensive experiments, including ablation studies and comparative evaluations against baseline models. The results demonstrate that our model achieves superior predictive performance. Furthermore, leveraging the model’s forecasts, we construct an optimized portfolio and conduct backtesting on the test dataset. Empirical results indicate that our portfolio consistently outperforms both baseline models and the S&P 500 index, highlighting the effectiveness of our approach in stock market prediction and portfolio optimization.This research did not receive any funding

    Homogeneous constitutive relationship of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries under quasi-static compressive loading

However, certain difficulties exist in extracting the homogenization model due to its asymmetric positive and negative electrode structure. The existing homogenization models are usually obtained by certain assumptions and fitting of the load-displacement-deformation experiment data, which has deviation with the experimental results and lacks some universality. In this study, we design a loading apparatus capable of precisely measuring the relationship between the loading distance and the contact area between the battery and the support platform under quasi-static compression conditions. Thus, the construction of an improved constitutive model can be achieved based on the obtained experimental data. The reliability of this model is validated through finite element simulation, demonstrating high consistency between experimental and simulation results.
