No full textWith America at war, The Staten Island Hospital Board established a Defense Committee, “with the power to act, to confer with and to assist the Superintendent in activities pertinent to the defense program of the hospital.” A significant number of doctors and nurses reported for active duty to support war efforts. The draft devastated many departments, and volunteers stepped in to assist.
