Enhancing Palliative Care: Implementing Immersive Virtual Reality to Enhance Patient Well-Being Across NSUH
No full textThe Broomx 360-degree projector is currently utilized in the palliative care unit to create immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences that alleviate anxiety, depression, and pain, while promoting patient well-being through meaningful interactions with family and caregivers. While not all palliative care patients at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) access the unit, anecdotal feedback indicates positive impacts from this intervention. The project\u27s goal is to identify eligible palliative care patients across various units at NSUH who can benefit from the Broomx. In April 2024, discussions with the social work team focused on relocating the Broomx to patients’ locations. Social workers will identify those experiencing pain, anxiety, or depression, coordinating with the Palliative Care team to initiate VR experiences. Patients and families will journal their reflections post-experience. Initial efforts will track the number of patients offered the experience and gather their feedback, supporting the project\u27s aim to enhance interactions and well-being. A pre- and post-survey (ESASr) will be explored to assess outcomes, aligned with an ongoing research protocol titled Immersive Virtual Reality to Improve Anxiety, Depression, Pain, and Well-being in Palliative Care Patients, Families, and Caregivers
