In 1894 the Training School for Nurses opened with a class of eight nurses. In 1903, the Staten Island Hospital Nursing School was formally registered with the Education Department of the State of New York. The Staten Island Hospital Nursing School remained open until 1943, with the establishment of the Staten Island Community School of Nursing, which was operated under the direction of Wagner College. Infirmary
The 1917 renovation of the hospital’s maternity wing was a significant upgrade, featuring new beds and improved changing stations. The first birth ever recorded in the S.R. Smith Infirmary was in 1892. Over 100 years later, The Gruppuso Women & Newborn Center follows the same tradition of advancing the care we deliver in the best environment possible for the people of Staten Island.https://academicworks.medicine.hofstra.edu/siuh_photo_archive/1004/thumbnail.jp
