Nurse with IV Fluids
After serving the Staten Island community for over a century, our nursing core values remain the same. This photograph is a timeless reflection of a patient care services team member preparing IV fluids for a patient. Intravenous technology was first published in 1883 by Dr. Thomas Latta during a cholera epidemic in Britain. The standard IV use of saline solutions did not begin until 1902. Intravenous therapy was further developed in the 1930s but was not widely available until the 1950s.https://academicworks.medicine.hofstra.edu/siuh_photo_archive/1007/thumbnail.jp
Food and Nutrition Team Members
The kitchens of Staten Island University Hospital have always been the backbone of strength and recovery for both patients and team members. William Sloane
William Sloane was the first president of Northern Westchester Hospital. According to the Westchester Parks Department, William was born on February 18, 1873. He prepared at Cutler School in New York and graduated from the 1895 class of Yale. He grew up in the lap of Gilded Age luxury destined to assume the leadership of W & J Sloane, a “house furnishing” company his grandfather started originally as a carpet warehouse in 1843 in New York City. William became president of W & J Sloane in January of 1906. He died in 1922. His estate eventually was donated by his daughter to Westchester county

Wellness and Stress Reduction Techniques: A Performance Improvement
Nurses and PCAs at the hospital have been experiencing increased stress, including compassion fatigue, potential patient errors, absenteeism, and burnout, leading to higher employee turnover. Current efforts to address these issues include leadership and PFCC rounding, as well as Lavender Huddles. To further support staff, new interventions have been introduced, such as modified lead assignments, massage chairs, and reduced lighting in a designated break room, as well as stress identification beads at nursing stations. The Patient Experience Dashboard tracks improvements in nurse courtesy, respect, and response times, and the pre-implementation survey for the Modified Lead Assignment Project revealed moderate stress related to patient acuity (3.69/5) and adequate staffing (3.52/5). Post-implementation data indicates positive changes, including reduced stress and improved patient interactions. A post-implementation survey will be distributed to gather additional feedback from nurses and PCAs on these new interventions and their impact
Improving Patient Care Through Pneumatic Tube System Improvement (PTSI) Pilot
North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) piloted a Real Time Location System (RTLS) to address inefficiencies with its current Pneumatic Tube System (PTS), which impacts the timely delivery of medications, lab specimens, and blood products. The current system suffers from tube shortages, leading to over-requesting, hoarding, and staff physically transporting items, ultimately delaying patient care and causing staff dissatisfaction. The pilot program tagged five tubes specifically for use on the 9 Monti unit and tracked their location if not returned within 30 minutes. Initial results showed a significant increase in staff satisfaction with tube availability and a 10% increase in labs processed before 10 am. Collaboration with IT and interdisciplinary communication were key to the pilot\u27s success, which aligns with Northwell Health\u27s value of innovation in patient care. Further evaluation, including assessment of impact on discharge times and throughput, and expansion to other units is planned
Promoting Health & Wellness in the Rehab Department:A Stress First Aid Approach
Due to low employee engagement scores in 2023 reflecting poor morale, high stress, and lack of team cohesion within the Rehab Department, a wellness initiative was launched. This initiative includes monthly team activities and weekly Wellness Wednesdays designed to boost morale, enhance engagement, and foster appreciation. Daily stress levels are tracked using a color-coded marble system and recorded in a Microsoft Form, allowing for trend analysis and correlation with implemented activities. While marble participation is inconsistent, engagement increases with reminders and incentives, particularly on activity days. Although a clear trend in daily stress levels hasn\u27t emerged, positive staff feedback and increased awareness of system-wide wellness resources suggest the initiative is effectively improving engagement and reducing stress, prompting its continuation
