    The Forgotten Expedition of the Michigan Polar Bears

    The Michigan Polar Bear expedition saw Allied forces leading a controversial excursion into Northern Russia during the concluding years of World War I. Despite thousands of soldiers being sent to interfere with the Russian Civil War, the Polar Bear Expedition has been lost from collective memory. We publicly inquired about the expedition, then combined this research with a found scholarly consensus about the lack of cognizance relating to the events. This revealed a disconnect, which led us to inquire as to the nature and origin of its historical omission. Our primary sources of research focused on the oral histories of veterans located in the Joint Archives of Holland. After analyzing the first person accounts of the soldiers, followed in turn by the reaction of their respective communities, we created a detailed description of this expedition’s impact on the greater Holland area. Understanding this multi-generational oversight will bring forth a greater argument for the importance of people to continue teaching and learning about this significant piece of history

    Community Participation: Let’s Have a Party!

    Post-secondary school outcomes have been dismal for individuals with exceptionalities. Because of these poor outcomes, the federal law entitled the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act put into place services to help these individuals develop vocational skills, independent living proficiency, and increased community participation. The purpose of this study was to identify if the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) Halloween Party helped individuals with disabilities increase their level of social engagement and community participation. We also identified if engagement in activities by Hope College students increased the desirability of the activity. Both the residents from the group homes and the Hope College students in attendance were given a survey asking about which events they were engaged in during the party and which events they enjoyed the most. When the surveys were completed, the data was analyzed to discover the individuals with disabilities’ and Hope College students’ levels of engagement, and the activities that were listed as most enjoyed by the individuals with disabilities. The results indicated that the majority of individuals with disabilities experienced high levels of engagement and community participation throughout the party and the most enjoyed activities correlated to the activities where Hope College students were the most engaged. It appears that the Hope College CEC Halloween Party helps individuals with disabilities increase their community engagement and participation skills

    Wildlife Activity Patterns at a Constructed Wetland Based On Trail Cam Monitoring

    Wetland habitats fill vital environmental roles because they potentially increase wildlife diversity and provide important ecosystem services. During 2015, the Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC) in Holland began reconstructing a wetland from an agricultural field, hoping to improve wildlife diversity. However, this site is near a regional airport, which raised some concern regarding the potential for increased aviation collision risk. In order to evaluate the success of the wetland in attracting wildlife and the potential wildlife hazard to aviation, we analyzed over 600,000 trail cam photos from 4 camera stations operating continuously through the 2015 wetland construction, and for 2 years thereafter. The most common species captured in photos were White-tailed Deer, Wild Turkeys, ducks and geese, a variety of small bird species, and small mammals such as coyotes. Each trail camera took both motion-activated photos and timed photos (taken every 5 minutes regardless of animals present from sunrise to sunset). Motion-activated photos provide important insights into the activity patterns of larger animals, especially at night, whereas timed photos have allowed us to discern distinct seasonal patterns in the abundance of large flocks of potentially “hazardous” animals such as Canada Geese. Results thus far suggest that wildlife has flourished in the new wetland; we have documented 13 species of mammals and 27 species of birds, as well as a few reptiles and amphibians, through trail cam photos. In addition, the camera trap project has provided unique glimpses into the activity patterns of various species. Our wildlife census information has been used to advise wildlife management decisions, and can be used in the future to alert airport personnel to dates and times of potentially heightened risk

    The Effect of Air Quality on US Labor Market Participation

    The adverse effects of deteriorating air quality on both human health and labor markets have become well-documented in epidemiological and economic literature. Health-conscious policymakers are presented with the challenge of implementing environmental regulations without causing substantial economic disturbance to industry employment, productivity, and wages. However, the social benefits of better health outcomes may correspond with economic benefits that outweigh the costs. Using data from the Current Population Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index, this study uses a multivariate fixed effects regression approach to estimate the relationship between air quality and various measures of labor market participation across 101 metropolitan areas in the United States between 1994–2017. Understanding the reflection of health outcomes in labor market participation may assist the quantification of economic benefits and contribute to a cost-benefit analysis of regulation policy. Empirical analysis suggests that variation in air quality has a negligible impact on US labor markets

    Zheng He and the American Liberal Arts Education: Contexts and Complications

    Zheng He was a eunuch of Moslem family heritage who held great authority early in the Ming Dynasty, primarily under the Yongle emperor (reign: 1402–24), as he led seven maritime expeditions, of which three reached the eastern coast of Africa. Of recent English language projects on Zheng He, Henry Tsai (1996) explores the context of the eunuchs of the Ming Dynasty in defining Zheng He’s work, and Edward Dreyer (2007) and Timothy Brook (2010) portray Zheng He within the context of the Chinese tributary system. However, other images also hold power over the Western imagination: Louise Levathes (1994) portrays Zheng He’s travels as trade missions and Gavin Menzies’s popularized Zheng He (2002) is first and foremost an explorer designed to be compared to Western explorers. While Zheng He can be partially understood through comparison to fifteenth-century Western navigators, we limit our knowledge when we identify him and his expeditions through the lens of Western traders and explorers. It is important instead to identify Zheng He within the framework of fifteenth-century Chinese history and culture. An examination of resources and methods for teaching Zheng He in an undergraduate liberal arts curriculum can serve as a case study for important issues to consider when infusing Asian Studies into undergraduate studies

    The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor\u27s history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular

    Melanopsin-Containing ipRGCs Are Resistant to Excitotoxic Injury and Maintain Functional Non-Image Forming Behaviors After Insult in a Diurnal Rodent Model

    Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are critical for the light signaling properties of non-image forming vision. Melanopsin-expressing ipRGCs project to retinorecipient brain regions involved in modulating circadian rhythms. Melanopsin has been shown to play an important role in how animals respond to light, including photoentrainment, masking (i.e., acute behavioral responses to light), and the pupillary light reflex (PLR). Importantly, ipRGCs are resistant to various forms of damage, including ocular hypertension, optic nerve crush, and excitotoxicity via N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) administration. Although these cells are resistant to various forms of injury, the question still remains whether or not these cells remain functional following injury. Here we tested the hypothesis that ipRGCs would be resistant to excitotoxic damage in a diurnal rodent model, the Nile grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus). In addition, we hypothesized that following insult, grass rats would maintain normal circadian entrainment and masking to light. In order to test these hypotheses, we injected NMDA intraocularly and examined its effect on the survivability of ipRGCs and RGCs, along with testing behavioral and functional consequences. Similar to findings in nocturnal rodents, ipRGCs were spared from significant damage but RGCs were not. Importantly, whereas image-forming vision was significantly impaired, non-image forming vision (i.e, photoentrainment, masking, and PLR) remained functional.     Enhanced Memory for Fair-Related Faces and the Role of Trait Anxiety

    The current research examined whether fair consideration—a social norm that people inherently prefer to confirm—would modulate face recognition. Each neutral face was associated with fair or unfair offers via an economic decision task, the Ultimatum Game (UG) task. After the UG, participants were asked to identify the faces of proposers who made different offers. Enhanced memory was observed for fair-related compared to unfair-related faces. Furthermore, high trait anxiety was associated with reduced memory for fair-related faces. These results were further confirmed by signal detection theory. The current research provided initial evidence that people showed enhanced memory for faces that made fair offers from the economic decision task, and that high trait anxiety was associated with reduced fair-related memory. Possible neural mechanisms and the implication in economic and social situations have been discussed
