Artists\u27 Statement: Tommy Storm and the Galactic Knights. A tale chock full of imaginative phrases, scenes, and characters, telling the story of five adolescent kids on a mission to save the universe. Sounds crazy, right? But by drawing inspiration from the story and my childhood, I was led to create this book--a book that illustrates a child\u27s imagination and the adventures that unfold.\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1083/thumbnail.jp

    The Queen of Fashion

Artists\u27 Statement: When I spotted the book \u27Fashion\u27, I was instantly curious to see which fifty fashion designers made up this \u27most influential\u27 book. While flipping through the pages, I was intrigued by the information expressed on each two-page spread the designers received. When I reached the page titled, \u27Alexander McQueen,\u27 located in the center of the book, I was left unsatisfied. I did not think those two simple pages did him justice. That is when I knew I was going to make him \u27The Queen of Fashion.\u27 Alexander McQueen displays an underlying meaning throughout his work, and I wanted to display this throughout my book. His bold personality inspired me to \u27take over\u27 other designer\u27s pages with his ideas. I wanted to recognize his dark elegance and teach other\u27s [sic] to see the beauty in his designs. This book is a tribute to him, and shows my appreciation for his uniqueness and talent. I truly believe that the Legacy of Lee Alexander McQueen will live on, and his designs will continue to inspire the fashion industry.\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1047/thumbnail.jp

Artists\u27 Statement: This beautiful cookbook presented itself as an idle object. It sat in a language that I could not read, on a subject that I have not practiced, and it asked me to think about the process of making food. Specifically, I thought about making food from the instructions of an old book and not from my mother or any of the effortlessly charming women on The Food Channel. It made so little sense to me. Then I realized how much the books and the foods have in common and how the format was so logical. The pairing was so seamless. They are here to teach us.https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1037/thumbnail.jp

From Craft to Industry: The Boat Builders of Holland (The Future)

    No full text
The Future The volatile economy and trend toward conglomerates in the pleasureboating industry during the last 40 years has worked against the development of new boat-building companies in Holland. The only firms to take on the tough times and succeed include custom makers of replica wooden powerboats and fiberglass boats powered by large engines, styled in bright colors and fast hull designs. The trend toward building one boat at a time in a small building until a level of production requiring a factory was achieved worked well until the market required higher production. Those companies were also purchased by larger companies and eventually closed due to the latest recession. Today, only three boat building companies call Holland home and are building boats for custom orders or in very small numbers to satisfy consumer demand. Over 175 have passed since the A.C. Mitchell first floated out onto Black Lake. Only time and creativity will tell if Holland will return to its former heights of boat production.
