Attachment and God Concepts in Japanese Young Adults
Using Bowlby’s (1969) attachment model, studies of children and young adults conducted in Christian dominated societies suggest that early attachment relationships with parents create internal working models (IWM) of nurturance and power which then predict images of God (Dickie et al., 1997; Granqvist, 2006). This study looked at both Christians and non-Christians in the multi-religious setting of Japan to see whether or not images of parents shape images of God in contexts where Christianity\u27s personalized God is not built into the fabric of the culture. We expected that: 1) Because Christians have a personalized concept of God, that they would rely most on the IWM of parents to describe God; 2) With continuing strict gender roles in Japan, we expected that mothers would be more important than fathers in predicting God images (Kimura and Nagai, 2004; Kumagai 1995). Sixty-three Japanese participants completed an online survey assessing their Religious beliefs, Concepts of God\u27s, mothers\u27 and fathers\u27 Nurturance and Power, and their attachment to God. The result showed that the IWM of mothers were more nurturing than fathers or God for both Christians and non-Christians. As predicted, Christians viewed all attachment figures as more nurturing and powerful than did non-Christians, and as more similar to mother than father. Non-Christians viewed mother as more nurturing and powerful than father or God, but viewed God as more similar to father than mother. The result also showed being Christian even in a non-Christian context appeared to be a strong predictor of a participant’s attachment to God as well as their concept of God as nurturant and powerful. Our research suggests the value of understanding parental relationships and the internal working models of authority figures, mothers and fathers, in predicting God images, even in a non-Western, multi-religious country
The Existential Function of Intrinsic Religiousness: Moderation of Effects of Priming Religion on Intercultural Tolerance and Afterlife Anxiety
Managing existential concerns is theorized to be a key function of religion. We posit that priming religion should be related to greater existential security for those high in intrinsic religiosity. In Experiment 1, priming religion increased intercultural tolerance among individuals who were highly intrinsically religious but decreased it for those low in intrinsic religiousness. In Experiment 2, intrinsic religiousness again moderated the effects of the prime, suggesting that priming religion resulted in attenuated afterlife anxiety for intrinsically religious individuals but greater anxiety for individuals low in intrinsic religiousness. Religious reminders appeared to provide existential securityevidenced by tolerance and reduced death anxietyonly to those high in intrinsic religiousness and can be threatening to those low in intrinsic religiousness. Existential outcomes are a specific case in which intrinsic religiousness can moderate the effects of religious primes, suggesting that religion plays a different existential role for different people

Affinity And Kinetic Modulation Of Polyamide–DNA Interactions By N-modification Of The Heterocycles
Synthetic N-methyl imidazole and N-pyrrole containing polyamides (PAs) that can form stacked dimers can be programmed to target and bind to specific DNA sequences and control gene expression. To accomplish this goal, the development of PAs with lower molecular mass which allows for the molecules to rapidly penetrate cells and localize in the nucleus, along with increased water solubility, while maintaining DNA binding sequence specificity and high binding affinity is key. To meet these challenges, six novel f-ImPy*Im PA derivatives that contain different orthogonally positioned moieties were designed to target 5-ACGCGT-3. The synthesis and biophysical characterization of six f-ImPy*Im were determined by CD, TM, DNase I footprinting, SPR, and ITC studies, and were compared with those of their parent compound, f-ImPyIm. The results gave evidence for the minor groove binding and selectivity of PAs 1 and 6 for the cognate sequence 5-ACGCGT-3, and with strong affinity, Keq = 2.8 x 108 M1 and Keq = 6.2 x 107 M1, respectively. The six novel PAs presented in this study demonstrated increased water solubility, while maintaining low molecular mass, sequence specificity, and binding affinity, addressing key issues in therapeutic development. Over the past 20 years, awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have supported Hope\u27s efforts to conduct STEM research and to prepare students to pursue careers as STEM researchers. The current program is building upon prior successes to create a deliberate pathway for students as they enter Hope as novices, build STEM Researcher skills through coursework and summer research and eventually become student leaders in STEM Research groups
Probing The Production Mechanism Of The Light P-process Nuclei
In an effort to investigate the production of Se-74 in p-process nucleosynthesis, the Ge-74(p,gamma)As-75 reaction cross section was measured in the relevant energy range of E-p = 1.6-4.2 MeV. The measurements were carried out using the NSCL SuN detector at the University of Notre Dame. The results are in good agreement with previous work, extending the measurements to both lower and higher energies. The measurements are compared to theoretical predictions using the NON-SMOKER and TALYS nuclear reaction codes. New and improved reaction rates are offered, and these reaction rates are used in a 25M(circle dot) Type II Supernova model to study their impact on the production of Se-74
