Connected Science : Strategies For Integrative Learning In College
Informed by the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL), Connected Science presents a new approach to college science education for the 21st century. This interdisciplinary approach stresses integrative learning and pedagogies that engage students through open-ended inquiry, compelling real-world questions, and data-rich experiences. Faculty from a variety of disciplines and institutions present case studies based on research in the classroom, offering insights into student learning goals and best practices in curriculum design. Synthetic chapters bring together themes from the case studies, present an overview of the connected science approach, and identify strategies and future challenges to help move this work forward. -- publisher\u27s description
Terminal Velocity
Artists\u27 Statement: Falling at 54 meters per second, the life of a skydiver depends on his parachute\u27s deployment. I went to work to save this book\u27s life. After some careful math, cutting, and sewing, the parachute was constructed. By sewing pockets into each seam along the parachute, I was able to thread it with I2 gauge aluminum jewelry metal to hold its shape. I then drilled two holes through the book\u27s cover and pages and inserted the aluminum, creating a sturdy base. After many hours of trial and error, this artist book was complete.\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1071/thumbnail.jp
Untitled
Artists\u27 Statement: We live in a performance driven world with an ever-expanding to-do list. Busyness has become the description of our lives. We don\u27 have time to make a nice homemade meal from scratch anymore. We are always in a hurry to complete the next task. What is taking over your life?\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1067/thumbnail.jp
Political Realm
Artists\u27 Statement: In the political realm, the public\u27s knowledge of a candidate or representative is based almost entirely on that candidates [sic] projection of himself. Remembering that actions speak louder than words, the intent of this book is to minimize the influence of spoken messages and focus instead on messages that manifest themselves through actions.\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1066/thumbnail.jp
James 1:5
Artists\u27 Statement: What is it we look for in life? Something More - more wealth, more stuff, more happiness, more knowledge, more, more, more What gaps are we trying to fill? Is it more about the quest or the end product? I seek more knowledge, more wisdom, and more love. This book represents my mind and heart, slowly and blessedly being filled and stuffed to the seams in hopes of doing something more with my life: giving back what I learn through teaching, and showing these joys in my art. (James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.)\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1064/thumbnail.jp

Robin Hood
Artists\u27 Statement When I think back on my childhood years, the stories that I read shaped my creativity and imagination. Robin Hood was one of the stories that inspired me and made me start thinking about the difference between right and wrong just as Robin Hood did. This artist book depicts the story of Robin Hood but also gives off a light and fun loving feeling that made me think back on my childhood when my mom used to read to me, which is another reason why I chose this book. I wanted this piece to encourage the younger generations of [sic] keep reading and that it can be fun and interactive if one tries.\u27https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/altered_book/1059/thumbnail.jp
